The International Association of Lions
Clubs is a non-profit federation of locally
autonomous non-political, non-sectarian,
Lions Clubs composed of the leading business and professional men in each community. A Lions Club is generally classif i e d as a « service club » and has from time
to time been compared with other organisations falling within the same general
classification, However, comparisons should
be made not on the basis of form of organization, but rather on the basis of accomplishments. The Lions have created for
themselves a fi el d of endeavor vastly wider
than that implied by the term «service»,
and in that field we believe they stand
alone. Other organizations in the service
club field hold luncheon and evening meetings, and the individual memberships in
them may be held according to classification, but generally speaking their similarity
to a Lions Club ends right there.
A Lions Club is a service club which lives
up to its name by actually being of service
to the community ill which it is located.
Where another luncheon club may feel it
has done its duly by passing a resolution
in favor of some particular thing, or in
condemnation of something else, the Lions
will take a good look at the problem or
project which needs attention, thrash it o u t
t h r o u ghly, and then go into action,
Lions Clubs are known and esteemed
throughoul the world because of the number and importance of their benevolent
activities. Each year their constructive activities reach a new high in number and
scope — a result of the care with which the
individual Lions Club are organized, membership selected, and activities planned and
carried out.
Describing what Lionism seeks to do in
the fewest possible words, it might be said
that its fundamental purpose is to make
each club's home town, or community, a
Bette r place in which to live. This o bj e c t i ve
automatically puts the Lions into everything t h a t goes on around town. Lions duns
are the only service clubs wi th a complete
community activities program. They are
interested in every opportunity for unselfish service to the community and, to this
end, their activities are grouped under ten
major headings :
Agriculture
Boys and Girls
Citizenship and Patriotism
Civic Improvements
Community Betterment
Education
Health and Welfare
Safety
Sight Conservation and Blind
United Nations
The greatest field of Lions' endeavor is
in connection with community betterment.
By completing a total of 101,736 separate
and distinct activities for the betterment
of their individual communities during the
1949 fiscal year, the 7,815 Lions Clubs in
27 countries throughout the world proved
again that they are indeed « The World s
Biggest Doers. »*
Typical of Lions club activities in behalf
of the community and its citizens are such
diversified items as : promotion of better
roads, airports and transportation facilities; City Beautiful, gardening and remodeling contests, clean-up, paint-up campaigns;
school modernization; educational improvements; students contests; children s safely; installation of playgrounds, recreational
centers and community buildings; encouragement of school and municipal bands,
dramatic classes, art contests and other
cultural activities; obtaining new industries
and commercial establishments for the
town.

In the welfare field, Lions clubs have
been instrumental in building and equipping many hospitals, wards and clinics;
securing iron lungs, X-ray equipment, eyeexamination apparatus, etc.; locating physicians in towns and areas needing them;
improving public health departments; furnishing aid for needy persons, orphans,
the aged, ill and blind.
Lions Clubs in agricultural communities
cooperate intensely with the farm population to obtain maximum agricultural development, more efficient marketing facilities and better living conditions. They annually sponsor many County Fairs; harvest
festivals; horse, livestock, poultry and home
gardening shows, home canning campaigns
and food conservation, and they also work
closely with County agents, 4-H Clubs,
Granges and other farm bodies.
Furthermore, Lions have assisted notably in all humanitarian causes, such as
relief to stricken communities or areas, as
well as giving support to such organizations
as the Red Cross, March-of-Dimes, Boy
Scouts, Gampfire Girls and innumerable
others. They cooperate fully in every Government undertaking of national interest.
During World War II, Lions Clubs
served tirelessly on the « Home Front ».
They assisted the armed forces by every
possible means and proved a powerful element in the United Nation's drive for Victory. Lions International has received official citations from the governments of the
United States and Cuba in recognition and
appreciation of the work of Lions Clubs.
The Lions have been especially prominent in the promotion of international
friendship and cooperation, with a view to
achieving lasting peace. As Lions are international in scope, they are likewise international in interests, particularly in the
promotion of good will and understanding
among nations. Because of the direct bearing which international good will has on
world peace and security under which civilization progresses, the first Object of Lionism, as set forth in the Association's International Constitution, pledges the Lions
Clubs to create und foster a spirit of généraux consideration amony the peoples of

the world, through a study of the piroblems
of international relationships.
In furtherance of this Object, Lions International has worked very closely with the
United Nations. In 194 I, the Lions, at the
invitation of the U.S. Department of State
sent a representative to Washington, D.C.,
to participate in the « off-the-record discussions » of the Dumbarton Oaks Proposals,
from which the Charter of the United Nations later came into being. The Lions also
were represented at a meeting in Washinton in February, 1945, to discuss the Bretton
Woods Agreement. In the Spring of that
same year the Lions played an important
role in a consultative capacity to the U.S.
delegation at the San Francisco Conference
where the United Nations Charter was
drafted. The effectiveness of the Lions' part
in welding the solidarity of the U.S. consultant group during the Conference was publicly expressed by the late Secretary of
State of the United States, the honorable
Edward R. Stettinius. The Lions had representatives at the Paris Peace Conference in
1946, and at numerous subsequent United
Nations meetings in Lake Success and
Flushing, N. Y., Paris and Geneva. In March,
1947, Lions International was granted consultative status in the Economic and Social
Council of the United Nations.
Every Lions Club has a United Nations
committee and thus keeps abreast of United
Nations happenings. The Committee sees
to it that members are supplied with copies
of the UN charter and t h a t a reasonable
number of regular club meetings are
devoted to United Nations discussion. It
also arranges for community observance
of United Nations Day on October 21 of
each year.
It was the Lions, incidentally, who first
conceived the idea of this world-wide celebration. Back in February. 1946, the Lions
Board of Directors, meeting in Havana,
Cuba, adopted a resolution proposing t h a t
one day be set aside each year as a day of
universal observance of peace. From this
evolved what is now known as United Nations Day.
In many communities, this observance of
United Nations Day has taken the form of
a model Security Council meeting, or a
panel discussion of the UN charter, to
acquaint the community with the workings
of the United Nations organization.
Much of the success and interest in this
type of meeting is due to the efforts of a
Lions International Past President, Fred W.
Smith, who, in 1947, as chairman of a committee of Non-governmental Organizations
Affiliated with the United Nations, drew
up a model UN program. This program was
sent to all Lions Clubs as well as to nongovernmental organizations all over the
world.
Closely correlated with Lionism's primary Object are the other five Objects of
Lions Clubs :
« 2. To promote the theory and practice of
the principles of good government and
good citizenship.
» 3. To take an active interest in the civic,
commercial, social and moral welfare
of the community.
» 1. To unite the members in the bonds of
friendship, good fellowship and mutual
understanding.
» 5. To provide a forum for the full and
free discussion of all matters of public
interest, partisan politics and sectarian
religion alone excepted.
» 6. To encourage efficiency and promote
high ethical standards in business a n d
professions; provided that no Club
shall hold out as one of its objects fi nancial benefits to its members. »
Lionism therefore is not only a medium for spreading good will, for initiating benefical policies and creating better relations between and within parties,
communities and nations, but is also one
of the most effective tools for the building
of men. Lions clubs are incomparable for
the aggressive type of public-spirited leadership they have developed. They are
incomparable for the training in community, national, and international affairs
which they are constantly giving their members, thus preparing them for greater service and greater, more intelligent participation in world affairs.
This high aspiration to serve, in the f u l lest sense of the meaning, has been the
guiding light of Lionism through the thirtythree years of its phenomenal growth and
expansion through 27 countries of the
world. When Lions International was
founded in 1917, there were just a few Lions
Clubs, and hardly more t ha n a handful of
Lions. Today, with a total membership of
394,640 of the leading business and professional men of 7,815 communities, the Lions
are the world's largest, most active, most
useful and most representative service club
organization.
The Lions have attracted men to them
because they are « different ». They are
different in their meetings, in their pep and
spirit and their way of doing things. They
are different in the way they run their
clubs and their districts. And they are different in that each Lions Club maintains
local autonomy, yet each is an integral part
of a very efficient district organization and
through that a unit in the closely coordinated International Association. Each Lions
Club, therefore, is able to choose the specific activities which it will carry on, but it
is also able to engage in activities of tremendous scope because, it is a part of a
great international organization.
Each Lions Club is run on a strictly business basis. None of the money which Lions
Clubs raise from their fund-raising projects
goes into the administrative funds of the
clubs. Each dollar collected is spent for the
exact purpose for wich it was raised. All
Lions give generously of their time and
talents to Lions work, for the Lions Club
is truly a Service Club.
Lions believe wholeheartedly in their
communities and their nation, and they
back up their belief with action — with
SERVICE. And this ideal of service provides a splendid vehicle through which
man's highest purpose to his fellowman can
be worked out. Lionism holds that service
to humanity, service to others is. in the
end. the law of civilization. It was « service » that lifted the national flags of Lionism to the sky, and it is service which will
keep them there.
