Pre-Season Patrol Captain’s Meeting th 27 June 2011, North Steyne SLSC Club Room Patrol Captains Present: Franco Milazzo (FM), Maxine Peacock-Smith (MPS), Elleshia Ripley (ER), Tracey Hare-Boyd (THB), Jo Cooper (JC), Deb Foote (DF), Bruce Watt (BW), Tim Platt (TP), Bruce Craven (BC), Nick Kohn (NK), Alex Salier (AS) Also in Attendance: Tom Rankine (TR, Club Captain), David Cowell (DC, Club Vice-Captain), Paul Friedmann (PF, IRB Captain), Stephen Leong (SL, Captain’s Assistant), Frank Traugott (FT, Chief Instructor), Ned Larsson (NL, Patrol 13 proxy), Shannon Job (SJ, Exec. Officer) Apologies: Ross Birch, Peter Coates, Aaron Moon, Garry O’Sullivan (President), Richard Donaldson (IRB Vice-Captain) Meeting Opened: 1405 Off-Season Club Updates 1. TR checked that all PCs have received the roster. Revisions will be made based on PC feedback. The club welcomed new patrol captains, NK, ER, BW and THB 2. TR explained construction changes around the Club—especially arrangements for patrol room, office, and new patrol storage area. Especially emphasised sterility of FA room— there will be a curtain to separate some of the area. 3. TR explained arrangements for BLS gear—only soft-pack Big Reds will be used on patrol. The metal Oxy-Viva kits are for training only. The red AED will be kept in the emergency box that will still be alarmed. The patrol FA kit needs to be re-stocked by each patrol; the emergency FA kit that accompanies the PAD will be re-stocked intermittently by the Lifesaving Panel. Due to problems in the past with chalking the oxy in big red, masking tape should be used on the tanks to allow visible marking. Training & Proficiency Updates 1. There will be a full IRB proficiency required. PF explained how he plans to run IRB Crew and Driver proficiencies. 2. ART proficiencies will be run separate, as per last year. 3. TR advised that there have been updates to the Bronze Medallion protocols with regard to CPR. The primary assessment is now DRSABCD. THB advised that the S for Send for Help has been added because in past years, too many Bronze candidates have been forgetting to call 000 and ask for BLS gear upon assessing a patient as non-responsive. 4. All PCs are reminded that straight after ‘R’, if a patient is non-responsive, the first aider should send for help either via Surfcom or 000, and ask for BLS gear if available. This call should not wait for assessment of airways, breathing, etc. 5. ART proficiencies—all but one ARC member has now completed the upgrade to ART. All ART members will need to do a proficiency for ART during October. Rostering 1. TR asked PCs with insufficient IRB Drivers on patrol to contact him urgently if they want more people into the current course. FT advised that Patrol 9 may need assistance on this. 2. Silver Medallion Advanced Emergency Care will be phased out as a qualification, and replaced by Silver Medallion Advanced First Aid. It is unclear if this will be a patrol requirement for 2012-13; however it is certain that it will not be a requirement immediately for 2011-12. JC queried how this would fit in with Apply First Aid (SFA). TR advised that Apply First Aid is a pre-requisite for Advanced First Aid. 3. Succession Planning: TP asked the question about PC training to bring more people on board. a. TR agreed and noted that we have four new PCs this season: ER, BW, NK, THB. b. BC clarified if existing PCs need to find a PC sub. TR advised that another member of the rostered patrol with the SM BBM award can take charge, but that the absent PC still needs to find a sub (just like any other member). c. TR advised that all but two of the PCs have the SM BBM award; they will be slotted into the next available course. 4. TR & FT both agreed that PCs who think they need more people with higher awards should speak with appropriate members on their patrol, and then nominate them to the Education team (FT, James Purvis, THB, PF, and Richard Donaldson). a. FT says this process is more efficient than mass emails, and has a greater chance of success. 5. TR encouraged PCs to cull the roster of names no longer serving on their patrol. 6. TR undertook to provide a weekly email to PCs that will discuss upcoming courses and anything worth mentioning from the previous weekend’s patrol. 7. TR will invest in a new patrol table 8. TR to revert on the following 3 things: a. IRB rashies; b. radio frequencies; and c. a list of patrol requirements and a notice board to go out on patrol. General Club Administration 1. There is a new website www.northsteyneslsc.com.au. 2. The Club Facebook page is a great avenue for queries about courses and education. 3. TR advised that there is always more money to subsidise higher qualifications—no member will be turned away from higher awards, and if courses are full, more will be run based on demand. 4. JC is planning a sponsors lunch and would encourage PCs to attend so they can be introduced to sponsors too 5. PF suggested employment and work opportunities are a great way to promote higher awards. Miscellaneous 1. TR advised procedures regarding hats—all members should be wearing either SLS or Club hat on patrol. North Steyne will allow the quartered cap to be worn around the neck as long 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. as they are also wearing either a SLS or Club hat while on patrol. The only exception is when in the water, the quartered cap must be worn. [Editor addition: The cap around the neck can and should be pulled on properly during all SNB inspections.] PCs who want patrol boxes re-stocked should leave them with TR for filling. TR will also include a contents list so that PCs know what they should have. Whistles—PCs queried whistles, TR & SJ advised that given how often we lose whistles, it is better to replace cheap ones regularly, rather than super expensive ones. SJ showed Club website and www.lifesavingonline.com.au. There is a lot of information available, and increasing levels of automation to streamline administration and circulation of events and courses. All PCs are encouraged to refer members to the site as much as possible. In particular, details of all courses and higher qualifications, as well as competition and membership renewal information, are available on the Club website. Patrol flags will change a little in their shape; and the surf craft signs will be black and white. Meeting closed: 1516 [approved for electronic distribution] Tom Rankine North Steyne SLSC Captain
