August 2001 PIPSC 82ND ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING NOVEMBER 2-3, 2001 Each fall, the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada holds its Annual General Meeting (AGM). The AGM is a gathering of the full membership of PIPSC as represented by delegates whose purpose is to review and set the policy direction of the Institute. It is a convention conducted under parliamentary rules where issues are presented, debated and voted upon by the membership. Delegates to the AGM represent the Board of Directors, Bargaining Groups and Regional Bodies that form the PIPSC organization. A Group delegate is an ordinary member who has volunteered to participate as a representative of the Bargaining Group; the member must be accepted by that Group's Executive to act as a delegate on the Group's behalf. At the last AGM, the CS Group had 34 delegates attend. This year, due to the increase in the number of members, we have 40 seats available. It is at the AGM that PIPSC members determine how our union will be directed to proceed in the following year. Institute policy is set, monthly dues deductions are determined, and the costs of running the organization are reviewed. In addition to planning and organizing, the AGM also provides the best opportunity for delegates of all of the Bargaining Groups in PIPSC to meet as a whole and exchange ideas and information. This year's AGM will be held November 2-3, 2001 at the Crowne Plaza Ottawa (formerly the Citadel Inn). CS delegates must be available for a Delegates’ Meeting at 7:00 p.m. on November 1, 2001. The CS Group needs your participation as a delegate! Travel and accommodation expenses incurred by CS delegates to attend the AGM are paid by the Institute. For more information contact Mary Hyland at the PIPSC National Office, 1-800-267-0446 or 613-228-6310 (phone), 613-228-9048 or 1-800-465-7477 (fax). Enclosed you will find a delegate application form. Any member of the CS Group interested in being a delegate is asked to complete the application and return it to the PIPSC National Office c/o Mary Hyland ASAP. Applications will be accepted up until the close of business (5:00 p.m. EDT), August 31, 2001. Although we are asking all CS’s to consider being delegates, we are limited to the number we can accept as delegates. Let me remind you that this is your union, the policies of this union and the direction this union takes on any issue is in direct response to membership demands. This is your opportunity to voice an opinion and vote on the issues. If you want to make a difference and you want to see change, then speak out where and when it counts, at your AGM. Delegates will be informed of their selection no later than September 21, 2000 and will be asked to arrange that they be available for a meeting of the CS delegates on the evening of November 1, 2001. Please fax your application to one of the fax numbers listed above.
