LEADER N E T W O R K 2010-2011 Issue 1 Lions Leaders Light The Way The American Heritage Dictionary tells us that a lighthouse is a "tall structure topped by a powerful light used as a beacon or signal to aid maritime navigation." A lighthouse, with its bright beacon, represents something those who are lost can look to for guidance and assistance. It is a "tall structure" – a large, solid, reliable structure. And that “powerful light” moves. When night falls, it flashes on, and when the sun rises, it turns off. It adjusts to whatever the needs around it call for. A lighthouse stands for safety, stability and hope. Our 2010-2011 International President Sid Scruggs recognizes this, and has chosen “A Beacon of Hope” as his theme, with the lighthouse as his symbol. This year, our president is calling for Lions to rededicate themselves to service. If we are to continue and expand our service impact, we must develop not only our own leadership skills, but those of the next generation of Lions leaders. President Scruggs encourages Lions to communicate the value of and opportunities for leadership development to our membership and promote a variety of Lions to take on leadership responsibilities. Skills can be enhanced by implementing quality training for club officers, zone chairperson, second and first vice district governors. Participation in local training programs, the Lions Mentoring Program and in Lions Leadership Institutes and Faculty Development Institutes should be promoted, and the variety of development opportunities available via the online Leadership Resource Center should be explored. To learn more about the 2010-2011 presidential theme, “A Beacon of Hope”, please visit the LCI website. Remember, as a Lions leader, it is up to you to light the way for service . . . and for our future leaders! Looking For Leaders…In All the Right Places It has been said that Lions Clubs International doesn’t have a membership problem, it has a leadership problem. Our association will only go as far as our leadership will take us, and too often the same Lions are thrust into further responsibility because we don’t know where to look for new leaders. In future issues of the Leader Network we will look at some ways to identify and encourage potential leaders and at some things we can do to guide their development. But today we ask that you consider a large group of Lions who have already taken a giant step toward becoming leaders, our Senior Lions Leadership Institute (SLLI) and Faculty Development Institute (FDI) graduates. The dedicated Lions who attend the SLLI not only receive training in skills like goal setting, communication, teamwork and motivation, but they experience a rare chance to share ideas and best practices with other Lions and gain insight into the challenges and opportunities we all face. FDI graduates have gone through an intensive, hands-on, performance-based approach to designing and delivering leadership training to other Lions. All graduates have delivered and been evaluated on their skills by experienced Lions trainers as well as by their peers. Lions Leadership Institute graduates have gone on to serve in important roles in clubs and districts. They have become district governors, council chairpersons, and international directors. Although a relatively new program, Faculty Development Institute graduates have already served important roles as facilitators at institutes, district conventions, and area forums The good news is that there are probably recent SLLI and FDI graduates ready to serve your district or multiple and apply their skills and enthusiasm to fill a leadership position. Looking for project or committee chairpersons? Need instructors for an upcoming seminar? Well, look no further! If you don’t already know the recent graduates in your area, you can contact the Institutes & Seminars Department at [email protected] for a list and begin reaping the benefits of our new generation of leaders. Senior Lions Leadership Institutes Shine a light on Leadership! The Senior Lions Leadership Institute program will provide opportunities for Lions to develop and enhance their leadership skills in preparation for responsibilities at the zone, region and district levels. In addition to an interactive and in-depth training session facilitated by well-respected, experienced Lions leaders, these events provide the unique opportunity for participants to share experiences and ideas with Lions from all corners of their constitutional area. Applications are now posted online for Senior Lions Leadership Institutes. In addition to speaking with you at the Leadership Division booth in the headquarters section of the convention hall, we were pleased to produce two very successful seminars. Council Chairpersons Seminar Past International Director Patti Hill and Past International Director Harold Ott addressed a capacity crowd, as they discussed elements that lead to a successful term as council chairperson. Participants enthusiastically brainstormed the elements of successful teamwork and developed possible solutions to potential leadership challenges, as well as reviewed the 2010-2011 international theme, goals and priorities. The LEADERSHIP EXCHANGE Over 100 Lions came aboard for The LEADERSHIP EXCHANGE in Sydney. Attendees celebrated Australia’s love of sailing while participating interactive, energetic sessions focused on various leadership skills. With guidance from Captain PID Ed McCormick, 11 crew leaders from around the globe kept the lively event moving full speed ahead. Crew Leaders included Past International Directors Randy Heitmann, Cliff Heywood, Tom Matney and Bud Wahl; Past Council Chairpersons Malcolm Kirwan and Rajinder “Pape” Sembi; Second Vice District Governor Ben Ng; Past District Governors Barbara Grewe and Carlene King; Leadership Development Chairperson Jama Wahl. Five lucky participants each won a remote controlled sailboat to remind them to keep moving forward with their leadership skills. G'Day District Governors! By introducing a topic using an icebreaker, the participants have some fun and are enticed to learn more about the topic. Some examples include: Webinar Tutorial Webinars are an easy way to bring training to your home via the internet. This interactive tutorial explains what a webinar is and shows you how to participate in a webinar. The tutorial includes computer screen shots that demonstrate in a step-by-step way how to pre-register, how to log in to a webinar and the GoToWebinar software features that will be used to interact during an LCI webinar. Also included are technical and other tips for successful participation in LCI webinars. • Provide a true false quiz about your topic and have the participants work in pairs or trios to answer the quiz. When you reveal the correct answers, each team sees what they know already about the topic. • Create a series of questions that ask about participants’ experience related to a topic. Some examples are: “How many have experienced a meeting that ran an hour overtime?” ” Have you conducted a meeting without having an agenda?” “Have you been in a meeting where one participant talks all the time?” The participants would stand up after each statement if they have had that experience. Then they sit down ready for the next question. • Use a scavenger hunt of a list of objects that have a connection to the topic. The participants have to try to find the objects among the participants in the room. • Ask participants (working in small groups) to think about what they want to learn, and create a title for the training presentation, a marketing jingle or a promotional song. An effective topic-focused icebreaker should include active participant involvement, interaction among participants, and a clear focus on a portion of the topic information. This type of icebreaker not only helps the participants feel comfortable within the group, but it also establishes a climate for active learning. For other suggestions of effective icebreakers, take a look at the Icebreakers, Team Building Activities, and Energizers resource in the Tips and Tools page of the Leadership Resource Center. A good leader inspires people to have confidence in the leader, a great leader inspires people to have confidence in themselves. Effective Listening Skills Program for Leos Almost everyone wants to improve their listening skills, and by doing so, they can improve their relationships with their club or family members. This program includes completing an online course module, Effective Listening Skills; and two interactive group activities that can be done during club meetings before and after completing the course. Bright Idea Knowing that strong leadership skills often start at the club level, District 202L, New Zealand, reported to us that a President Training Day was held on April 10th. To promote interest in the program, an invitation to the President Training Day was sent to incoming presidents, vice presidents, and future club leaders. The theme of the training was, “Learn the 7 Keys for a Successful President”. Topics included Building a Management Team, Goal Setting, Planning a Club Meeting and The Art of Communication. A pre-training assessment was sent with the invitation so that the training could be tailored to those in attendance. What a bright idea to encourage leadership excellence at the club level where it matters most! We want to hear from you! Our objective with The LEADER NETWORK is to provide you, our multiple/single district leadership development chairpersons and GLT Team, with information and ideas you can use in your leadership development efforts. If you have a Bright Idea, suggestions for future issues or a specific topic you would like to see addressed in the next issue (2010-2011 Issue 2), please let us know.
