Studio Maffei Milano presenta la prima personale della fotografa italiana Elisa Penagini. In mostra settanta
immagini suddivise tra Polaroid e stampe da pellicola in edizione unica, su carta baritata, che rappresentano
il progetto realizzato a New York, all'interno del workshop "Personal Documentary" in collaborazione con i
fotografi Erica Mc Donald e Andrew Sullivan.
Il risultato è un diario visivo, un lavoro autoreferenziale, attraverso cui emerge un doppio sguardo su di sé e
sulla città, dove l'intimità personale e l'ambiente esterno si mescolano e si riflettono l'una nell'altro. Una
documentazione meticolosa, giorno per giorno attraverso l'immagine fotografica.
Una grande parte della ricerca dell'artista è focalizzata sull'autoritratto, sul vedere sé stessa attraverso le cose,
attraverso l'esperienza filtrata dal contesto culturale e temporale in cui si è inserita. La fotografia è risultato di
una ricerca compositiva e di una posa che si assume pur nella visione più naturale possibile, nella semplicità
delle azioni quotidiane: le immagini esercitano una certa seduzione su chi l'osserva, da esse emerge urgenza
psicologica, uno stato interiore, determinato dal contesto, dal momento sia in cui le immagini sono realizzate e
sia dal tempo e dal luogo in cui in seguito sono lette.

Studio Maffei Milano presents the first solo exhibition of italian photographer Elisa Penagini.
On display seventy pictures divided among Polaroids and only-editions film print on baryta paper,
representing the project created in New York during the workshop "Personal Documentary", in collaboration
with photographer Erica McDonald and Andrew Sullivan.
The result is a self-reported visual diary where personal privacy and the external environment are mixed and
are reflected into each other. A meticulous documentation, day by day through the photographic image. A
large part of the research is focused on artist's self portrait, seeing herself through things, filtered through the
experiences of the cultural context and time in which it is inserted.
The photos are the result of research into the composition of simple everyday acts: emerges from them a
psychology determined by the context and the moment in which the images are made and the time and
place which later will be read.
The daily diary is enriched by details of the city through to the long and meditated time of film photography
where begins to breathe New York by glimpsed faces, sweeping views, architectural details and nightclubs.

souris quand la situation ne l'impose pas. souris quand tu es en colère, quand tu te sens malheureuse,
quand tu te sens très malmenée par la vie - et vois quel effet ça fait.
souris à des inconnues dans la rue.
New York peut être dangereuse, tu dois donc être prudente.
Si tu préfère, ne souris, qu'a des femmes (les hommes sont des brutes,
ils ne font pas leur donner d'idées fausses). Souris néanmoins aussi souvent que possible aux gens que tu ne connais pas.
Souris à l'employé de banque qui te donne ton argent, à la serveuse qui t'apporte ton repas,
à la personne assise en face de toi dans la métro. Vois si l'un de l'eux te sourit en retour. Comptabilise le nombre des sourires qui te sont adressés chaque jour.
Ne sois pas déçu quand les gens ne te rendent pas ton sourire.
