March 22 ‐ COB ‐ E‐Inquiry ‐ AMSE ‐ RDIMS# 11613109 ‐ SOLAS ‐ verified gross mass Dear Stefan Kruber, Following a year of consultations with Canadian stakeholders, Transport Canada, Marine Safety and Security is currently at the stage of preparing the final version of the Canadian procedure for obtaining the verified gross mass of packed containers as required by the new SOLAS provisions in regulation 2 of Chapter VI. Once finalised and approved by the Marine Safety and Security Executive Committee, the procedure would become the "certified method approved by the competent authority" of Canada. The general intention supported by all Canadian stakeholders is to avoid creating any duplication of the existing mechanisms of certification, calibration and inspection of weighing equipment in Canada (the devices certified for compliance with the existing Industry Canada standards will be accepted for verification of containers' gross mass as well). Another important thing is to provide Canadian stakeholders with maximum flexibility by keeping all options open. The procedure is going to be published as a Transport Publication (TP) in the nearest weeks (hopefully, by the end of March).
