MEMBER MATTERS
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Marion Rosen
NAFT Acting President
NAFT Co-Vice President 2011
Annual Conference
The NAFT annual conference will be held on October 29th 2010.
We are looking for a venue. Could you please email Marion if your school is willing to host
the conference.
YEAR 12 STUDY SKILLS DAY
The year 12 Study skills day on Saturday 14th May was a great success for both students
and teachers. A particular thank you to those teachers who came from country areas and
from far away Sydney suburbs. We had approximately 400 students attend and 48 schools
enrolled. Sadly not all schools that applied were able to attend the Continuers sessions
due to the huge demand and lecture theatre seating limitations. Next year please get in
early!
A special thanks to ALL PRESENTERS and VOLUNTEERS who willingly gave so freely
of their time and skills. NAFT is fortunate to be able to call on the support of such
committed and professional colleagues. Preparations are currently underway to upload
the presentations from this event on to the NAFT website. We hope to have these
available by term 3.
Weekend d’immersion Year 8
Due to its great success last year, the Weekend d’Immersion d’Année 8 was
again held this year (27– 29 May). Approximately 60 students along with
their teachers (from various schools in NSW) joined together for a weekend
of fun tout en français at Milson Island. A good time was had by all. Un
Super Grand Merci à Ritta Serret et Marie-Ange Lewis.

Weekend d’immersion pour les professeurs
Our annual Weekend d’Immersion was held in Katoomba on 3-5 June. We were lucky to
have wonderful weather all weekend which meant that all activities were possible –
including a walk from Wentworth Falls (Le chemin de Darwin: sur les pas de Charles
Darwin et 4 explorateurs français du 19ème siècle) which was a highlight for many. A fun
morning of drumming (in French) enthused many for the weekend ahead. There were
wonderful, entertaining presentations by French assistants from Quebec, Ile de la Reunion
and France. An informative talk about the Intercultural was also a valuable inclusion in the
programme. NAFT member Nicole Phipps delighted us all with a presentation on her
native Canada and some fabulous technology applications. A few films and games were
included too for added variety – although many people were happy to just chat (in French)
and catch up with colleagues and friends Thank you to all participants and UN GRAND
MERCI to all presenters.
There were a few problems with the hotel and we thank all attendees for their patience
and understanding – it was good that this didn’t spoil the weekend for NAFT. However,
NAFT will aim to source a different venue for next year. Many suggested ‘going south’ for
a change. The committee will keep you posted about this in the new year.
BRICABRAC
ACARA update
* Draft Shape Paper for languages
As you are aware a Shape paper for Languages was produced by ACARA earlier
this year. NAFT did not submit a response as there was insufficient feedback
from the membership to produce one. However responses were submitted by
FATFA and the AFMLTA. Please see attached documents.
* For a limited time, ACARA is currently offering an online
consultation opportunity – General capabilities

L’apprentissage professionnel
* IB French (MYP or DP): if you would be interested in sharing
resources and ideas, have a look here: http://ib-french-nsw.wikispaces.com/
and add what you can.
Or email Fiona Boughey [email protected] to chat about how we might be
able to collaborate.
* June 27th French Beginners worskhop in Newcastle. Please see info
attached if you are interested.

* 6th Annual AIM Conference which will be held in Melbourne during
September. This is entirely to different to the regular workshops. This is a
major event and an opportunity for teachers to get an insight in to AIM via
highly experienced AIM Presenters from Canada. See attached flyer for
further information.
tard.
* Rappelez-vous qu’il y existe l’occasion de demander des subventions
de la NAFT pour l’apprentissage professionnel.
As always NAFT appreciates the support of our Associate Members and
encourages teachers to make use of their services.

Projet Interculturel
I have just discovered NAFT and was wondering if you could help me with a project I am
launching.
This project, named Konstelacio, aims to develop consciousness of cultural diversity and
intercultural dialogue amongst children.
In order to meet this ambitious goal, I will be traveling during 15 months around the world
where I will help children write short stories presenting their culture and traditions. These
stories will be put together in small books and exchanged between the participating
countries. This means spending 2 months in a school/organisation of each country, and
working with a class of 8 to 10 year-old children twice a week during 1h30 each time. The
trip is starting in September this year and I would be in Sydney from February to April 2012
included.
You will find more information in the document attached.

Would you know a school that could be interested in hosting the project?
It is completely free and has already been tested here in France where the kids are really
looking forward to discovering Australia's culture and traditions!
Thank you very much in advance for your help,
Kind regards,
