What are my research questions? What`s a hybrid learning
How do students interact to learn in university hybrid systems? Nathalie Deschryver TECFA – FPSE, University of Geneva, Acacias 54, CH-1227 Carouge What’s a hybrid learning system at the university ? How do I try to answer my questions? Traditional Higher Education Monographic and longitudinal methodology Interviews + blogs ICT Learning environments Individual variables Distance Education Learning experience Hybrid learning system Learner-centered Individualization (flexibility, project, negotiated « journey », self-directed learning) Efficient learning (activity, collaboration, mutualisation) Hybrid learning system A central question : “Please describe a situation in which you have the feeling to have learnt. In which context, with whom, in which circumstances? Documents + interviews Fig. 1 – Framework for the context of the research Inductive, descriptive and exploratory approach (category and structural analysis) What are my research questions? • • • Hypothesis about the conditions of effectiveness when managing social interactions in a hybrid learning system How do students in these hybrid learning systems negotiate individualization and social interaction (collaboration, mutualisation) in their learning experience (situations which make sense for students as regards learning – constructivist perspective) ? What are the privileged social interactions : interactions related to cognitive or emotional support; distance/face to face ; interactions with trainers, peers, experts, other people; formal/informal interactions ? Can these modes of interaction be understood in relation to individual variables like motivation, previous experience of learning, social constraints/resources or student perception of the training system ? Fig. 3 – Methodology First results Laura case • Solitary experience of learning towards a more interacted one Individual variables Learning experience Previous learning experience What ? (product) • Interactions lived progressively as • constraints in « no-learning » situations • cognitive support with « out-context of the system » interactors • affective support with peers • Quantitative (more knowledge) Motivation • In/extrinsic • Personal project Social factors (constraints /resources) Student perception • Pedagogical scenario • Constraints/Resources Hybrid learning system Individualization Individual/collective tasks Articulation facetoface/distance Support for interactions in the technological environment • Qualitative (construction of sense) • Institutional (getting marks) • Affective Distance-online situation Face/face situation •Link with personal project of the student (individual variable) : •Project centered on collaborative learning Questions • What about the evolution of the experience of learning by other students? • What about the link with the personal project? • Are face/face interactions more privileged than online ones for other students? How? (process) • Cognitive • Affective • Meta-cognitive Which conditions ? (privileged interactions) • Support : cognitive, affective, meta-cognitive • « Interactor » : peers, trainer, community, expert, other Publications Charlier B., Deschryver N.et Peraya D.
