Dominique Fiat est heureuse de présenter l’exposition personnelle Babel: New Works de l’artiste indienne Anita Dube.
A travers cette exposition, l’artiste explore le territoire des mots comme «manifestes corporels» qui expriment le monde
dont elle est témoin. Engageant la politique dans sa recherche esthétique du texte et de la théorie, l’artiste entend aussi
élever la primauté du toucher sur le visuel. Tous ces travaux «incarnent» littéralement les mots - les rendant chair notamment dans une performance et une série de photographies où l’artiste découpe des mots dans une viande : des
mots clés suggérant l’utopie et la dystopie dans lesquelles nous sommes plongés.
L’oeuvre Kash (for Kashmir) est composée de rosaces baroques recouvertes de velours blanc dans lesquelles viennent
se loger des photographies d’inconnus, de paysages ou de fleurs prises lors du dernier voyage de l’artiste au Cashemire. Seul ‘Kash’ (signifiant «espoir» en Hindi) est conservé du mot ‘Kashmir’ et marqué par des tâches noires délimitant
la ligne d’un violent conflit politique. Ces idées sont également développées dans d’autres travaux de «mots» interrogeant la perte et la régénération, à la fois individuelles et sociétales. La pièce Erotics/Politics pose ainsi la question de
la relation entre les deux, comme celle entre de grands immeubles et leur ombre ; les oeuvres Elegance et History is…
(for Egypt), construites à partir de fragments de textes, décrivent la beauté de la résistance et le pouvoir des foules à
apporter le changement social.
Dans Babel, Anita Dube présente des oeuvres récentes mêlant cacophonie, chaos et désillusion, résistance et espoir.
Anita Dube participe à l’exposition Paris - Delhi - Bombay... au Centre Pompidou du 25 mai au 19 septembre 2011.

Dominique Fiat is pleased to present a solo exhibition Babel: New Works by Delhi based Indian artist Anita Dube. In
this exhibition, the artist extends the visible line wherein words act as corporeal manifestos that comment on the world
as witnessed by her. Engaging the political through an aesthetic investigation of text and theory, she demonstrates her
interest in the primacy of touch alongside the visual. This ongoing body of works literally ‘embodies’ words- makes them
flesh- in a performance and series of photographs where she cuts meat into ‘Keywords’ that reflect on utopia’s and
dystopia’s that affect us.
In ‘Kash (for Kashmir)’, she uses baroque ceiling rosettes, covering them with white velvet and embedding them with
photographs of people, landscape and flowers, after her recent visit to Kashmir. Only Kash, which means ‘hopefully’
(in Hindi), is retained in the word, marred by a black dripping line of violent political conflict. These thoughts continue in
other (velvet) word works, which investigate a human concern with both personal and societal loss and regeneration.
For example ‘Erotics Politics’ investigates the relationship between the two: tall buildings and their shadows and ‘Elegance’ and ‘History is…(for Egypt)’, uses found text pieces to comment on and contemplate the beauty of resistance,
along with the power of the multiple to bring about social change.
In ‘Babel’, Dube presents the cacophony, chaos and disillusionment in our lives, along with the joy, hope and beauty that
makes it all worthwhile.
Anita Dube is part of the exhibition ‘Paris - Delhi - Bombay... ‘at the Centre Pompidou, Paris from May 25th to September
19th, 2011.
