It is the veritable symbol of the resistance put up by the lands of Languedoc. In 1243, when the whole region had given in to the crusaders, only Montségur resisted the repeated attacks mounted by several thousand soldiers. After a ten-month siege and in the depths of a particularly harsh winter, Montségur surrendered. On 16th March 1244, more than 250 Cathars were burnt alive. Lower down, in the village, the Archaeological Museum will allow you to complete your tour of the castle and get a better grasp of the site’s history, notably with several mock-ups and a film reconstituting one of the houses in the Cathar stronghold. On the spot: car park, restaurant, arts & crafts, boutiques, shops. Access from Lavelanet town centre (roundabout): take the Foix direction. As you leave Lavelanet turn left and follow the signs to Montségur. Mirepoix The Bastide (Mediaeval “New Town”) was destroyed in 1289 by the flood caused by the bursting of the Puivert dam, and rebuilt on its current site under the aegis of Guy III de Lévis. It was laid out according to the regular plan of the Bastides of South-West France. Its unusual square – surrounded by 15th-century timber-framed arcades – is home to the famous “Maison des Consuls” decorated with around one hundred carved wooden heads. The Porte d’Aval (gateway) bears witness to the old fortifications, and its old Cathedral imposes itself through its sheer size. Mirepoix, home of the good life, is a place to discover, and rediscover. g n i g e i Bes Castle of Roquefixade perched on an impressive cliff-top, Roquefixade fortress stands facing Montségur.
