Synopsis
Romeo Eleven is the intimate portrait of a shy young man looking for love in all the wrong places. A

Ivan Grbovic
Biography
Ivan Grbovic was born in 1979. He obtained a Fine Arts degree at Concordia University and continued his
studies at the American Film Institute (A.F.I.) in Los Angeles where he completed a Masters in
Cinematography. He worked on several projects as a cinematographer, including the award-winning
short Fine (2001). In 2006, he wrote and directed his first short film, La Tête Haute, followed by Les
Mots and La Chute in 2008. He recently finished his first feature film, Romeo Eleven (Roméo Onze),
which had its world premiere in Karlovy Vary where it won the Ecumenical Jury Commendation.

Ali Ammar
Ali Ammar was born in Lebanon in 1989 and now lives in Montreal. He first came to Canada with his
mother to get medical care. His father joined them later. He was born paralyzed on one side of his
body, but went through many operations which first helped him to walk without a wheelchair, then only
with crutches and finally on his own. There is no doubt that Rami/Romeo’s character parallels many
aspects of Ali’s life. This first acting opportunity gave him a taste for the profession and Ammar wishes
to pursue it in the future.
Joseph Bou Nassar
Joseph Bou Nassar is an acclaimed Lebanese actor. He learned acting in Paris theatres, before
establishing his own theatre in Lebanon. He played in many Soap Operas for local TV and in several
famous Lebanese movies such as Autour de la maison rose (selected by Lebanon in the Best Foreign
Language Film category at the Oscars 2000), West Beirut (François-Chalais Prize at the Quinzaine des
Réalisateurs in Cannes) and Beyrouth, Open City (official competition in Carthage and Abu-Dhabi
festivals).
Paul Barbeau
Paul Barbeau has produced about 15 short films that have won international prizes, including the top
prize for Best Short Film at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Under the banner of Reprise Films, he then produced the feature films Demain and Jo pour Jonathan,
both of which had their premieres at the Locarno International Film Festival. Jo pour Jonathan was
awarded the Best Actor Prize at the Whistler Film Festival, the AQCC Prize at the Festival du Nouveau
Cinéma as well as the Cinema and the City Award at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival.
Roméo Onze is his third film. His fourth, Après la neige, is presently in post-production. He is also
working with Sebastien Rose on his new feature film, Avant que mon cœur bascule, which will be shot
in the fall.

Romeo Eleven

The anonymity of the Internet is both a blessing and a curse for the physically handicapped 20-year-old
in "Romeo Eleven," the fragile and touching feature debut of Serbo-Canuck scribe-helmer Ivan Grbovic.
Set in Montreal's Lebanese Christian community, the well-acted pic, co-written by Grbovic and his
talented lenser, Sara Mishara, treats delicate material with a deft hand as it observes a youngster
whose affliction makes him an outcast not so much in the real world as in his still-forming mind. Further
fest travel seems assured after a Karlovy Vary competish berth, with offshore sales possible, especially
for smallscreen formats.
Young Rami (Ali Ammar) aimlessly roams the malls and streets of the city when he should beattending
courses to prep for business school, as desired by his stern immigrant father, Ziad (Joseph Bou Nassar).
Too busy with his restaurant business and the upcoming wedding of his eldest daughter, Nada (Caline
Habib), Ziad fails to notice that something's not quite right with his only son, who has always had
difficulties walking. Rami is either alone or hangs out with his high school-aged kid sister, Sabine (Sanda
Bourenane), with whom he speaks French and who, like Rami, seems to lead something of a double life.
Grbovic and co-screenwriter Mishara (who is of Turkish and Jewish-American parentage) keep the early
reels relatively straightforward, parceling out info in small doses and paying close attention to the daily
routines of this Maronite family. With its emphasis on education, hard work and traditional values, Ziad
and his children don't seem to differ too much from most other first-generation immigrant clans.
At night, Rami finds some solace on the Internet, where, as Romeo11, he chats with the mysterious
beauty Malaury26. Repped by a handsome avatar picture with none of his awkward walking movements,
Rami freely flirts with Malaury26, to whom he presents himself as a successful young businessman -perhaps not unlike the one his father would like him to become one day.
Pic fully comes into its own about halfway in, when Malaury26 again suggests they should meet, and
Rami finally agrees. The boy's minute preparation for the big event and the evening itself play out like
one long, impressively sustained sequence in which the personalities of Rami and Romeo11 come faceto-face. Finale wraps things up beautifully; the final shot works as both an arresting image and an
elegant visual expression of where Rami finds himself.
With a tone very close to naturalism and character development on a tiny, very subtle scale, much the
film's success relies on non-pro thesp Ammar to hold the screen, which he does with ease. With striking
features and considerable charisma masking a childlike vulnerability, Ammar, who suffers from a similar
condition to Rami's in real life, is simply mesmerizing, often expressing ideas and feelings without need
for dialogue. Hopefully, this natural talent will be able to carve a niche for himself in Canuck cinema.
Vet Lebanese actor Bou Nassar (West Beirut) ably heads the supporting cast.
Mishara's fluid and saturated lensing, which incorporates several nicely executed tracking shots, leads
the strong tech package. Some vid footage of Rami trying to walk as a toddler feels randomly inserted,
serves no direct purpose and could be removed.

« Touchant Roméo Onze »

Découvert ce matin avec ravissement, le premier film d’un ex-étudiant de Concordia, Roméo Onze,
d’Ivan Grbovic, présenté en compétition officielle.
Le jeune Ali Ammar incarne dans cette histoire touchante de simplicité un jeune Montréalais d’origine
libanaise qui compose très mal avec un handicap physique qui l’empêche de marcher normalement.
Solitaire et taciturne, l’adolescent trouve son seul plaisir devant son clavier, à « chatter » (sous le
pseudonyme Romeo11) avec une inconnue, s’inventant un personnage d’homme d’affaires occupé.
Jusqu’au jour où la jeune fille lui demandera de le rencontrer…
Malheureusement absent de Karlovy Vary pour raisons familiales, Grbovic signe un drame tout en
nuances, finement écrit et filmé, porteur d’un message d’espoir et de tolérance. L’épisode de l’hôtel,
avec un protagoniste pris d’une nervosité incontrôlable, est particulièrement réussi.
Le film a été tourné à Montréal, en arabe surtout, mais aussi en français et en anglais.
On n’a pas vu toutes les autres productions de la compétition officielle tchèque, mais le film de Grbovic
mériterait de figurer au palmarès. De la même façon, on le verrait bien décrocher quelques
nominations aux Jutra et aux Genie.
Roméo Onze devrait prendre l’affiche quelque part à l’automne. On y reviendra alors plus en détails.

« Entrevue exclusive avec Ivan Grbovic pour le film Roméo Onze - Un cinéaste montréalais »

Roméo Onze, seul film québécois concourant pour l’obtention du Globe de cristal au Festival
international du film de Karlovy Vary, est né du désir du cinéaste Ivan Grbovic d’explorer davantage la
ville qu’il habite et aime, Montréal.
Roméo Onze est le pseudonyme qu’utilise Rami, un jeune homme que l’âge adulte effleure à peine.
Affligé d’une atrophie musculaire au niveau des jambes qui lui a valu une opération, Rami compose à
présent davantage avec les conséquences psychologiques que physiques de sa condition.
Timide et renfermé, il trouve refuge devant son ordinateur, où il entretient une correspondance assidue
avec la fille de ses rêves à qui il ment un peu, beaucoup… Éprouvant le sentiment de ne pas combler les
attentes de son père restaurateur, Rami cherche, de dérives en tâtonnements, à s’émanciper.
Seul film québécois présenté en compétition officielle au Festival international du film de Karlovy Vary,
Roméo Onze constitue le premier long métrage du jeune cinéaste Ivan Grbovic. Coécrit avec sa
compagne et directrice photo, Sara Mishara, Roméo Onze propose, aux dires mêmes d’Ivan Grbovic, un
récit d’apprentissage classique. Contexte et protagoniste le sont moins.
Le couple devait présenter le film en première mondiale aux festivaliers, mais la venue au monde
prématurée de leur premier enfant a contraint tout le monde à rester à Montréal. La mère et le poupon
se portent bien, comme en témoignaient les gazouillements ravis entendus en arrière-plan au cours de
l’entrevue téléphonique exclusive qu’Ivan Grbovic et, plus tard, Sara Mishara ont accordée au Devoir.
« Ça fait du bien de relaxer devant un café et de juste discuter au téléphone », lance d’entrée de jeu
Ivan Grbovic. Alors, discutons ! Le personnage étant tellement spécifique et nécessitant la participation
d’un acteur au physique très précis, on se demande d’office qui, de Rami ou de son histoire, est venu
en premier. « Rami était là dès le début. Je voulais écrire quelque chose qui fasse écho à mon propre
parcours, tout en découvrant un milieu culturel qui m’était étranger, d’où cette famille libanaise. J’ai
été très naïf durant tout le processus : je n’ai pas réfléchi aux difficultés inhérentes à ces choix-là. J’ai
écrit un premier jet et l’ai montré à Sara. Ça lui a plu… en jetant les trois quarts », précise-t-il en
riant. Dès lors, la collaboration s’enclencha et l’écriture à deux devint naturelle.
Un souci d’authenticité
Camper l’action dans la communauté libanaise de Montréal impliquait l’embauche de comédiens
libanais : « Je suis d’origine serbe, et s’il est une chose que j’abhorre, c’est lorsque je vois un Marocain
ou un Tchèque jouer le méchant Serbe de service dans un film américain. Bref, je tenais à ce que des
acteurs libanais jouent les Libanais. » Or on se doute bien que le bottin de l’Union des artistes ne doit
pas en regorger. Ainsi, Ivan Grbovic s’est-il tourné vers Joseph Bou Nassar, une grande star au Liban,
pour jouer le paternel dur mais aimant. Plusieurs rôles, dont celui de la sœur cadette de Rami, sont
défendus avec justesse par des non-professionnels. C’est le cas d’Ali Ammar.
Au cinéma, le naturel est chose rare, et il ne suffit pas de placer un quidam devant la caméra pour le
capter. D’une intériorité bien modulée, le regard rivé au plancher, Ali Ammar émeut sans tricher. Il est
la révélation du film.
Forcément, peu de jeunes hommes possédaient les caractéristiques physiques et ethniques de Rami.
« Cinq candidats se sont présentés. Ali était le quatrième. » Lorsqu’Ivan Grbovic lui a ouvert, il a trouvé
Ali de dos, déjà prêt à s’en aller. Très nerveux, le cégépien s’était bien préparé. « J’ai rapidement
appelé Sara, se souvient le jeune réalisateur. Autant il est Rami, autant il est différent de lui. Ali est
très calme, très posé. Il dégage une grande sérénité. Je l’adore. Je reparle de lui avec beaucoup
d’affection. »
Travailler chez soi
Diplômé de l’Université Concordia et détenteur d’une maîtrise en direction photo de l’American Film
Institute (AFI), Ivan Grbovic n’a jamais envisagé de travailler ailleurs qu’au Québec.
« J’aime les films qui se font ici. J’aime Montréal. Vivre à Los Angeles me l’a confirmé. » Sara Mishara
se joint momentanément à la conversation avec de fort jolis mots : « Il faut avoir vécu à l’étranger
pour avoir envie de parler de chez soi. »
On laisse la petite famille à son nouveau-né, une petite fille, soit dit en passant. Gageons qu’on
reparlera de leur autre bébé bientôt, puisqu’il est certain que Roméo Onze va concourir dans d’autres
festivals.

« Les deux revers d’une même médaille »

bascule […] du côté de la vie.
« Roméo 11 » est le surnom d’internaute qu’a choisi Rami (Ali Ammar) en s’inventant une vie sur la
toile. À sa réalité de jeune handicapé vivant encore sous le toit de ses parents, il oppose celle d’un
businessman brassant de grosses affaires entre deux vols vers New York ou Los Angeles. Une jeune
femme
séduisante
s’intéresse
à
lui.
Elle
veut
le
voir.
Rami
investira
tout
– surtout ce qu’il n’a pas – dans ce rendez-vous sentimental. Les chances de « rencontres » étant plutôt
rares, pas question pour lui de laisser passer pareille occasion. Surtout que le milieu familial commence
à mettre un peu de pression…
Avec beaucoup de sensibilité, Ivan Grbovic, qui signe ici un premier long métrage, orchestre
l’inévitable crise d’un être en proie à la désillusion. Et le dur apprentissage qui en découle. Le
scénario, que Grbovic a coécrit avec sa compagne Sara Mishara (aussi directrice photo), se révèle subtil.
Tout comme le jeu d’une distribution d’ensemble mêlant des non professionnels à des comédiens
accomplis. Ali Ammar, dont il s’agit d’un tout premier rôle à l’écran, impose une solide présence. Il
partage notamment quelques scènes magnifiques avec le vétéran Joseph Bou Nassar, impeccable dans
le rôle du père.
Ce touchant Roméo Onze prendra l’affiche chez nous au cours des prochains mois. […]
