THE Simpson PRIZE A COMPETITION FOR YEAR 9 AND 10 STUDENTS 2012 Runner-up Queensland Emma Kearney St Andrew’s Catholic College Why has Australian commemoration of ANZAC Day increased in popularity in recent years? Emma Kearney St Andrew’s Catholic College 12 AUDIO-VISUAL EXPLANATION T here are various reasons as to why the commemoration of Anzac Day has inreased in popularity Anzac Day held within our history and therefore its integral part in our future. Yet today, we see those cancerns have been dismissed. As recent as 2010, a record crowd gathered at Kings Park for Western Australia’s biggest ever Anzac Day dawn service, with many young children and their families attending. Although the Gallipoli assault was ultimately a failure, Australia had created a legend, that grew to encompass the very core of Australia’s belief; integrity, loyalty, bravery, courage and heroism. This legend will continue to shape Australia’s identity. lt is what Australians identify with at Anzac Day services. We recognise the impact that a legend can have. Each year we come together to re-identify. We celebrate the legend born by the stockmen and farmers identify with the attributes associated with the Anzac legend. To bring it from a place once only recognised as a ‘sunburnt country’ to multi-cultural society built upon the foundations of the Anzac Legend, the legend that was established 96 years ago in the trenches and on the shores of Gallipoli. ! New evidence has also been broughtto light, and historians play a crucialrole in the retelling of the sheer " %! " as we were back in the 1960s. We seek to make up our own mind, to take all the evidence into account and then decide. The sheer amount of numbers seen in recent years concludes that Australians have decided that Anzac Day is an important day in our nation’s history. Anzac Day has seen ever increasing crowds over 95 years of commernoration, the day continues to resonate deeply with our nation’s identity, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. 2012 Runner-up Queensland Emma Kearney St Andrew’s Catholic College 1 SPEECH: EMMA KEARNEY “Why has Australian commemoration of ANZAC Day increased in popularity in recent years?” & !'( ) ! and women have made for their country.
