Two Canadian Researchers Receive Sanofi–CARO Award
for Research in Prostate Cancer Therapies
July 22, 2015, Ottawa, Ont. – The Canadian Association of Radiation Oncology (CARO) is pleased to
announce that Dr. Robert Bristow and Dr. Eric Vigneault have been selected to receive the Sanofi-CARO
Award and have each been awarded $24,000 to continue their research in prostate cancer therapies.
The unrestricted research grant was made possible through funding by Sanofi Canada.
“We are excited to be able to offer Dr. Bristow and Dr. Vigneault the opportunity to further advance
science and develop new treatments for prostate cancer through the new Sanofi-CARO Award,” claims
Dr. Ross Halperin, President, CARO.

important work of radiation oncology clinicians and researchers in developing new treatments for
prostate cancer. We need to work together to improve patient health outcomes and find solutions so
that patients have access to the right treatment options that help them live healthier and longer lives,”

Sanofi-CARO Award recipients:
Dr. Robert Bristow, Senior Scientist, at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (University Health
Network), has been awarded a research grant of $24,000 for his work in characterizing the influence of
prostate cancer genome instability and hypoxia on radiation therapy outcome.
Dr. Eric Vigneault, Radio- Oncologist, at the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Québec (CHUQ) has been
granted $24,000 to further his evaluation of the risk of lung cancer in patients with iodine 125 seed
migration to lung after permanent prostate implant.
Their research projects were chosen for funding on the basis of their high scientific merit, feasibility and
relevance to Canadian Radiation Oncology. The funds awarded must be spent within Canada.
Advances in therapy offer hope to patients and their families. By supporting such projects, it confirms a
commitment to ongoing research and innovation to find solutions that improve quality of life and even
prolong it.

Deux chercheurs canadiens reçoivent le prix Sanofi-ACRO
pour leurs travaux sur les traitements du cancer de la prostate
Le 22 juillet 2015, Ottawa (Ontario) – L’Association canadienne de radio-oncologie (ACRO) est heureuse
d’annoncer que Dr Robert Bristow et Dr Eric Vigneault ont reçu le prix Sanofi-ACRO ainsi qu’une
subvention de 24 000 $ chacun pour poursuivre leurs travaux de recherche sur les traitements du cancer
de la prostate. Cette subvention de recherche sans restriction a été rendue possible grâce au
financement de Sanofi Canada.
« Nous sommes ravis d’offrir aux Drs Bristow et Vigneault l’occasion de faire avancer la science et de
développer de nouveaux traitements contre le cancer de la prostate grâce au nouveau prix SanofiACRO », a déclaré Dr Ross Halperin, président, ACRO.
« Sanofi Canada contribue depuis longtemps aux stratégies de recherche innovatrices. Nous
reconnaissons le travail important que les cliniciens et les chercheurs en radio-oncologie accomplissent
dans le domaine thérapeutique du cancer de la prostate. Nous devons travailler ensemble à améliorer
les résultats des traitements et à trouver des solutions afin que les patients aient accès à des options
thérapeutiques efficaces qui les aideront à vivre plus longtemps et en meilleure santé », explique Franca

Récipiendaires du prix Sanofi-ACRO :
Dr Robert Bristow, chercheur principal au Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (Réseau universitaire de
santé), a reçu une subvention de recherche de 24 000 $ pour ses travaux, qui consistent à caractériser
l’influence de l’instabilité génomique du cancer de la prostate et de l’hypoxie sur les résultats de la
radiothérapie.
Dr Eric Vigneault, radio-oncologue au Centre hospitalier universitaire de Québec (CHUQ), a reçu une
subvention de recherche de 24 000 $ pour ses travaux, qui consistent à approfondir son évaluation du
risque de cancer du poumon dans les cas de migration de grains d’iode 125 aux poumons après
l’introduction d’un implant prostatique permanent.
Les subventions ont été octroyées à ces deux projets de recherche en raison de leur grande valeur
scientifique, de leur faisabilité et de leur pertinence pour la radio-oncologie canadienne. Les subventions
doivent être dépensées au Canada.
Les progrès dans le domaine de la radio-oncologie donnent de l’espoir aux patients et à leurs familles. Le
soutien que nous apportons à des projets de ce genre confirme notre engagement envers la recherche
et l’innovation afin de trouver des solutions qui améliorent la qualité de vie et, parfois, augmentent la
