It’s one of those things Americans say they want the most. The rich can’t buy it and without it, you’re never quite right. Here is our chief science correspondent, Robert Bezelle. When former President Clinton suffered heart trouble recently, he said (that) lack of sleep could’ve been a factor. From the time of the Haiti earthquake, I’ve been working a lot without sleeping much. Waking up again six or eight times over the course of a night… Far-fetched? Not at all say sleep experts like Doctor Grace Pen of the University of Pennsylvania. There are a couple of research studies now that, ah, have looked at the association between how much people sleep and whether they’re more likely to have heart disease, and that association is looking like it’s real. Many experts say (that) sleep is a critical part of staying fit that many people ignore. Sleep is part of a triade of healthy behaviors, eating right and exercise being the other two. Actually, my cardiologist sent me in to see you. Ah, I’ve been exhausted all day long. Sleep-lab studies show how all three parts interact. Sleeplessness leaves people less motivated to exercise. It also releases stress hormones and alters insulin production, making them eat poorly, gain weight and putting them at risk for diabetes and heart disease. All night long (I couldn’t sleep) the Internet buzzes.. I’m tired beyond belief … with people sharing their computer diaries of insomnia. One-thirty in the morning. For increasing numbers of Americans, the solution is to take a sleeping-pill almost every night. In 2008 doctors wrote fifty-seven million prescriptions for sleep medication – a number that almost doubled in seven years. According to experts, some people may need that nightly pill, but most do not. I think that the vast majority of people who are not getting, uh, enough sleep just aren’t making enough time to sleep. That means walking away from the computer, the TV and other distractions long enough to fall asleep – ever more important in the struggle to achieve our personal best.
