teachers have come up with to help their students learn more effectively.
Some Technology Tools that Enhance Teaching and Most Instructors Overlook (Saul Carliner, Concordia University)
9
Although MOOCs and flipped (hybrid or blended) classes have dominated the discussions of technology-enhanced teaching the past few years, they're not the only
technologies available. This session highlights those other technologies, describing what they are, how you might use them, and suggesting the extent of effort required to
do so. Perhaps one or more of these technologies might suit your needs.
Getting Started in the Active Learning Classroom (ALC) (Chris Whittaker, Physics)
10:30 – 12:30
10
This workshop will introduce you to the basics of teaching in Dawson's Active Learning Classrooms (ALCs). You will learn the fundamentals of using ALCs, including: the
basics of collaborative group work, SMART Boards and associated technologies, classroom management, scripting and orchestration. If you are new to the ALCs or want
to teach in an ALC this is a good place to get to know the ropes.
Designing basic active learning activities: How to get started (Selma Hamdani, Psychology & Anna-Liisa Aunio, Sociology)
11
Turning a lecture into a learning activity can be a daunting task. In this introductory level workshop, you'll bring your ideas about your learning objectives and start
designing basic activities that place your students squarely in the center of the learning process. This workshop is ideal for faculty who are beginning the process and
would like some helpful pointers and constructive feedback.
The MMFA Collection and Exhibitions: An Inspirational Resource for Multi-Disciplinary Educational Projects (Marilyn Lajeunesse; Kate
12
Walker, MMFA/MBAM )
Educators from the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts will present examples of unique projects designed for learners in college settings. Participants will discuss and develop
an idea for a project linked to their teaching disciplines using selected images from the Museum's collection and exhibitions as starting points.
Dawson SPACE: An interdisciplinary learning experience (Andrew Katz, English; Frank Mulvey, Illustration and Design, Fine Arts; Joel Trudeau, Physics and Jiri
Tucker, History, Classics)
13
What is the value of interdisciplinary learning for our students? Is it feasible to offer them a more interdisciplinary education during their time at Dawson? In this workshop,
SPACE (Sciences Participating with Arts and Culture in Education) will explore the challenges of creating opportunities for interdisciplinary learning, while also
demonstrating how the SPACE web magazine, talks and exhibitions can be used as pedagogical tools to foster interdisciplinary discussion and collaboration.
Universal Design: Une Mise en Pratique! (Laure Galipeau, Alice Havel, Effie Konstantinopoulos, Catherine Soleil and Susie Wileman)
14
Members of the French Department, in collaboration with the AccessAbility Centre have implemented practices based on the concept of Universal Design that have
transformed second language French instruction in the classroom. The outcome has been very positive, both for students and for teachers. This bilingual workshop will
explore how the practice of universal design in one discipline can be generalized to others.

A bilingual workshop - À quoi sert votre cours?
Why is your course important to your students’ curriculum? You know the answer. Do your students know? Do you think you can have power over your students'
motivation? This session will elucidate the components of motivational dynamics and detail the attitudes and teaching practices that influence this dynamic. You will
discover that you do not need to turn into a guru!
Live Online Classrooms (Julie Wong, Business Administration)
Using a web conferencing platform (Adobe Connect), participants can communicate with each other online via text chat, voice, and video and use resources such as
presentations, files, screen sharing and polling. An online live virtual office hour session will be demonstrated using video and a digital whiteboard.
Enhancing Collaboration using FirstClass (Silvia d'Apollonia, Biology)
Participants will be introduced to how FirstClass tools can be integrated into your LEA or Moodle classroom. The tools that will be covered are a social-media platform, a
class forum/conference/community, a video-conferencing group board, a wiki, and a blog.

the outcomes of the Graduate Profile, and how we plan to use this information to support teachers' professional development.
Thinking of Research Ethics (Sacha Young and REB Committee Members)
25
The Dawson Research Ethics Board invites faculty and staff interested in exploring the complexities of research ethics to join this interactive session. Using case studies
and an inquiry-based approach, we will examine some common and unique ethics issues in Educational and Social Science research. Participants will be encouraged to
think critically about the ethical implications in research design and methodology.
Autism Spectrum Disorder: 20 years later and we're still learning (Alice Havel, Susie Wileman & Joseph Darrous, Student AccessAbility Centre )
26
27
Students on the Autism Spectrum are arriving at the college in ever increasing numbers. Reflecting on Dawson's 20 years of experience, what have we learned about
effective strategies to enhance the integration of students on the Autism Spectrum? What have we learned from our mistakes? We will share specific strategies such as
group work, laboratory settings, etc. We would also like to hear about your experiences with students on the Autism Spectrum so that you can let others know what works
for you.
Sustainability Seed Workshop & Tour (Cindy Elliott and Sustainable Dawson colleagues)
Cindy Elliott, Sustainability Coordinator, Horticulturist & Garden Designer will take participants on a seed gathering workshop. During an interpretive walk of flower species
in the Peace Garden, participants will have the opportunity to collect seeds from their favourite flowers. Materials will be supplied by Sustainable Dawson.
