This visitor’s guide accompanies the exhibition Architecture as Resistance. Wang Shu - Amateur Architecture Studio that takes place in the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels from the 17th October to the 24 th January 2010. Er wordt steeds uitgegaan van kleinschalige ar- A mateur Architecture Studio emerged on the European architectural scene at the 10th Venice Architecture Biennale: next to their Chinese pavilion, the office’s two partners Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu presented an installation called ‘Tiles Garden’: no less than 66,000 recycled Chinese roof tiles laid on a bamboo base. Amateur Architecture Studio explore the relationship between architecture and the changing life style in China. Through their work, in poetic fashion these architects convert traditional Chinese know-how into a contemporary architectural language. The name of the office signifies much: ‘Amateur Architecture’ is an implied critique of the lack of thought by professional architects in contemporary China, where entire urban and rural areas are being utterly transformed as part of the country’s ongoing globalization; and it also reflects Wang Shu’s interest in China’s vernacular architecture, an architecture that has long produced handmade, low cost, spontaneous, often ephemeral buildings. Amateur Architecture Studio seek answers to questions such as how to reconstruct areas of Chinese cities using contemporary techniques but respecting the traditional Chinese building ideology of relating to the natural landscape; again, how to cope with large-scale demolition and reconstruction in Chinese cities; and lastly, how to reinterpret local design traditions by finding ways to recycle older buildings. Over the past ten years Amateur Architecture Studio have developed an experimental methodology that is both innovative and site-specific. Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu combine research into the Chinese rural tradition and their own architectural experiments. As point of departure their design practice has small-scale architectural experiments, subsequently implemented in specific metropolitan spaces and in the construction of high-rise residential buildings. Ultimately these experiments should be carried out on the full urban scale. In a number of projects including university campuses, a large gallery, a museum, a city park and a number of high-rises, Amateur Architecture Studio endeavoured to promote the “Rebuilding Contemporary Local Chinese Architecture” concept. The exhibition has a two-fold axis: the models, photographs and plans provide the first comprehensive overview of Amateur Architecture Studio’s major projects since its foundation in 1997; and at the same time, the exhibition focuses on the relationship between theory and praxis, between literary production and the architectural body of work. B orn in Hangzhou in 1963, Wang Shu belongs to the first generation of architects whose studies came after the economic reforms pushed through by Deng Xiaoping in the late seventies. After studying architecture at Southeast University (Nanjing) he took a doctorate in city design. Now Dean of the School of Architecture and Director of the Architecture Department in the China Academy of Art, Wang Shu is regularly invited to be on a jury, and is a member of the 2009 Nomination Committee for the Ordos prize. Before becoming an architect Wang Shu was a writer, and he likes to insist that for him architecture is only part of his work. ‘Humanity is more important than architecture, and craft industry more important than technology’, he writes. In 1997 Wang Shu and his wife Lu Wenyu founded their bureau Amateur Architecture Studio, staying clear of the centralized public architectural agencies typical of the regime. In addition to teaching in the China Academy of Art, Lu Wenyu continued working as engineer and project manager for the East China Investigation and Design Institute until 2003. Amateur Architecture Studio’s work has already appeared in group exhibitions in Berlin, Paris and Rotterdam. It has won several prizes, including the Global Award in 2007. Works by Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu have appeared in a number of international architecture magazines and in the book The Beginning of Design, published in 2002. The latter gives an account of the process whereby Wang Shu’s method and language have developed, and itemizes each of the bureau’s projects since its foundation. This café’s walls are lined both inside and out with colourful ceramic tiles designed by Zhou Wu, in the many shades of Chinese porcelain. The space opens up to the south, profiting from the sloping site, while on the north side a broad ramp shields the building from the nearby street. There are doors to the east and west, and a public alley crosses the space. Stairs up to the roof provide a view of the river. The first phase of this China Academy of Art campus lies to the south of the Xiangshan hill. The buildings house various facilities including classrooms, workshops, studios and a library, in a regular arrangement. Like the traditional Chinese houses with inner courtyard they are arranged in U-shaped plans each enclosing a garden where students can find peace and calm concentration. The roofs have local grey tiles, as do the canopies of the outer facades. Inside the courtyards the windows are large, with shutters concealed behind the wood that lines all the inner facades. Located on the other side of the Xiangshan hill, phase two of the campus has a composition that appears to reflect the complex forms of the surrounding countryside. The architecture becomes a landscape in its own right. Thus some of these concrete buildings have irregularly shaped apertures while others have a plain white roughcast finish; but in this case their quiet simplicity is interrupted by long sinuous walkways. Described by Wang Shu as applying a “modernized traditional building concept”, these five buildings are scattered over a 65 acre park in the centre of Ningbo. The Art Gallery’s roof was inspired by the traditional curved roofs of the regions with rainy season, but given its length has three curves instead of two. The design of Teahouse 1 echoes that of the traditional houses built around an inner garden. Teahouse 2 reflects a Zen spirit through the garden’s random twists and turns, as do the mud walls of clay and bamboo. The Café gets the curved shape of both its roof and its floor from that of a lotus leaf waving in the wind. And the Office Building, built with recycled bricks, has a curved geometry on account of the sloping site. This Ningbo museum is in a ‘new town’ with very low density of construction, wide avenues and very large squares. Given this location Amateur Architecture Studio envisaged the museum as a town in itself that could challenge the vast empty spaces around it with a rich programme and a great variety of multifunctional spaces inside the building. Some of the building materials were recuperated from demolitions in the old city, now decorating the facades in random fashion.
