These connectors consist of a male or female contact and molded male or female insulator sleeve. The contact has a pin which projects above the surface and a ring with clips projecting above the surface to hold the contact inside the insulator sleeve. The insulator sleeve has a metal ring bonded inside to hold the contact. This metal ring has a “U” shaped slot machined in one side to accept the pin on the contact and a shoulder for the ring to lock into. The machined slot is located under the rib molding parting line on the insulator sleeve and the opening is toward the cable end of the sleeve. ASSEMBLY TOOLS A pair of male and female Com-a-long assembly tools are available for pulling contacts into sleeve and are recommended. Part numbers are A200020-5 Male Com-a-long for Female Connector A200020-6 Female Com-a-long for Male Connector. LUBRICANT Liquid soap, or cable pulling compound used to lubricate the sleeve and cable will make assembly easier. A lubricant is available from Chemtrend, Inc., 1445 West McPherson Park Drive, Howell, Michigan 48844-0860. Their part number is CT-39F. DO NOT COAT CONTACTS OR ID OF SLEEVE WHERE CONTACT FITS, AS THIS WILL CAUSE THE CONTACT TO SLIP WITHIN SLEEVE. ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE—MALE OR FEMALE CONNECTOR 1. Cut cable to desired length. Use sharp cable cutter. Do not saw conductor as this distorts cable stranding so that it will not fit into contact. SAW XXX 6/10/02 2. Strip approximately 2 ¼” of cable jacket off conductor. Insert bare conductor into cable hole in contact. Tighten set screws to 20—25 ft. Lbs. of torque. Tighten end screw first, then the second screw. Holding contact in a vise makes it easier to torque set screws. Page 1 of 2 EB 94 3. The cable jacket is smaller than the inside diameter (I.D.) of insulator sleeve. Build up the cable jacket diameter by wrapping uncured neoprene tape over jacket until it is snug fit on I.D. of sleeve. 4. Lubricate I.D. of sleeve lightly with a little liquid soap, or cable pulling compound to make assembly easier. Insert proper Com-a-long assembly tool through sleeve from front of sleeve. Lightly lubricate O.D. of neoprene tape on cable and contact. 5. Connect Com-a-long to contact and pull contact into sleeve until pin on contact hits metal ring inside of sleeve. Rotate Com-a-long clockwise while pulling until it lines up with slot in ring. Pull forward until pin on contact is seated tightly in “U” shaped slot in ring. When pin is in correct position, the Com-a-long can not be rotated because pin prevents contact from rotating. This securely holds contact in sleeve, preventing forward movement of contact and rotation of contacts. The ring clips prevent the contact from backward movement. Wipe off excess lubricant. Blow dry with air hose, if available. The helps make the contact take a set in sleeve to prevent movement. 6. Slip hose claps around insulator sleeve and tighten snugly. Do not over tighten as this will distort the sleeve. 7. Wrap several layers of electrical tape of hose clamp to prevent accidental cutting of hands from sharp edges. CAUTION—ONCE THE ASSEMBLY HAS BEEN MADE, IT CAN NOT BE DISASSEMBLED WITHOUT DESTROYING THE LOCKING RING ON THE CONTACT. POSITIVE LATCH CONNECTORS. Follow above procedure and at step 6 check to be sure the red trip button is operating. Depress button and check that the positive latch blade in end of contact retracts and returns as button is depressed and released. If button hangs up, try pulling contact into sleeve further so the trip button lines up with button in contact. Recheck after tightening hose clamp to be sure free movement of latch remains.
