Dear Reader.
You will never imagine what a yellow rubber duck is teaching science
Undoubtedly one of the most iconic figures of Western Pop culture, the yellow rubber duck was first commercialized in the late 19th
century as the result of the emergence of rubber manufacturing. It was probably mass popularised as it was one of Ernie´s toys of choice ,
the famous Muppet from Sesame Street. ... It as conspicuous to the point that in 2001 a British tabloid newspaper reported that one of
them was spotted in Queen Elizabeth´s II royal bathroom.
Nevertheless, our story for this month is not based on uncertain royalty recreations, but on real "ducky events". This adventure starts one
stormy January night in 1992 somewhere in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. That night, a cargo en route from Hong Kong to Tacoma
(USA) sank in the middle of the ocean with nearly 29,000 First Years bath toys onboard.
Since then, and for 20 years, they have travelled 17,000 miles, floating over the North Pacific Gyre, spending years frozen in an Arctic
ice pack and even drifting over where the emblematic titanic sank.
The curiosity of the story rests in the fact that Curtis Ebbesmeyer, a retired oceanographer, saw from the beginning how valuable the
rubber duckies could be in tracing ocean currents. The invincible ducks have indeed helped researchers to chart them. Their resistant
material makes them perfect to go with the flow and their iconic shape makes them much more likely to be reported to the authorities
than the floats which scientists normally use.
A toy created to indulge many hours of fun and adventures in a bath ends up predicting the ocean flows... It is fascinating how the flow
of life every so often swaps traditional roles all of a sudden.
Let´s be like the ducks, let´s go with the flow and let´s discover this months latest in Digital Flow Switches for Large Flow. Welcome to

Cher Lecteur,
Show. ...
