Drawing Now 15 / Videos Sylvain Bourget / Spin Spin, 2008 Sequence of 5 videos of 30 seconds each Series of five animated feature films that are part of a set entitled Spin that means: toss; swirl; rotate. These short abstract films originate from some kind of proto-sports spotted on the internet. Spin (pizza), 2008, video loop 30s http://www.sylvainbourget.com/spinpizza.html Some pizza chefs engage in acrobatics when they knead the dough, perilously throwing and catching it again - that, without sacrificing taste, presentation, or cooking. Pizza-tossing art is taught and may be practiced with silicone plastic doughs cooked according very specific recipes. Contests have been organized; they were mainly taking place in Italy and the United States originally. The source of this animated film is a choreographed pizza spinning on a music by Elvis Presley. Spin (powerball), 2008, video loop 30s http://www.sylvainbourget.com/spinp.ball.html Powerball is a precision gyroscope which consists of a rotor rotating at high speed within a sphere held in the hand. It is both a toy, a fitness and rehabilitation tool instrument. Some models have a revolution counter, useful for measuring the performances. The world record is currently held by Greek Akis Kritsinelis, with 16 732 revolutions per minute; the video from this record served as medium for the realization of this animated film. Spin (cup stacking), 2008, video loop 30s http://www.sylvainbourget.com/spingobelet.html Cup stacking is originally an American sport using plastic cups. The goal is to stack and pop the cups in a predefined sequence as quickly as possible. This sport has experienced a particular visibility on the web thanks to a video showing the world record of Emily Fox, an American teenage girl. By mimicry, Cup stacking videos have mushroomed on the internet. One of those videos served as medium for the realization of this animated film. Spin (rifle spinning), 2008, video loop 30s http://www.sylvainbourget.com/spinfusil.html Rifle spinning derives from military training. It can also resemble the handling of the majorette baton. Gun replicas are used in college and high school for simulating military procedures. The rifle manipulations may include sophisticated throws. The source of this animated film is the demonstration of a soldier who manipulates his rifle outside his barracks. Spin (stone skipping), 2008, video loop 30s http://www.sylvainbourget.com/spinricochet.html The source of this animated film is a video from the world record of ricochet held by Kurt Steiner who managed 40 consecutive ricochets. ***** « In recent years, through sculptures, drawings and animated featured films, Sylvain Bourget convenes by similar principles a field of references linked with records, feats, contests and "proto-sports" of all kinds, through plastic procedures that mostly involve graphic simplification, abstraction or miniaturization, all means which allow to hold off facts and gestures that could arouse a foolish fascination in the first place.(...). More importantly, if the practices convened by Sylvain Bourget fall within a sub-culture environment that may seem silly or frivolous, they also remind the viewer - somewhat educated in art history - of gestures that are not very far from certain artistic performances from the last decades. These gestures, whose social function is not clearly identified, often oscillate between heroism and absurdity, between the spectacular and the commonplace. Therefore, record holders, sportsmen of the strange and eccentric feat holders that inhabit Sylvain Bourget’s work evoke the figure of the contemporary artist. One now understands that the Guinness Book of Records or the websites, among Sylvain Bourget’s main research methods, do not just offer an endless list of unusual facts but also a repertoire of gestures and forms, whose performative or even sculptural value has to be noticed. » Jérôme Dupeyrat Insolitus.
