PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ITU S3 Winter Triathlon World Cup a big success Quebec Maxime Leboeuf and Claude Godbout take first place Quebec City, Sunday, February 21, 2016 – The Québec ITU Winter Triathlon—this year designated an S3 Winter Triathlon World Cup by the International Triathlon Union (ITU)—has drawn to a festive conclusion with coronation of Quebec Maxime Leboeuf and Claude Godbout. More than 25 Elite triathletes together with 89 age group category participants from seven different countries gathered on Quebec City’s Plains of Abraham for the third annual running of the event, a new ITU Winter Triathlon format featuring snowshoeing, skating, and cross country skiing. The ITU S3 Winter Triathlon World Cup was held as part of the MEC Québec Pentathlon des neiges. The course—in magnificent natural surroundings offering a spectacular view of the St. Lawrence River—included 5 km of snowshoeing, 11 km of skating, and 9.5 km of cross country skiing. Elite participants (17 men and 8 women) had a maximum of 1 ½ hours to complete the course. The first five men and women to cross the finish line shared in $8,000 of prize money. “We are proud to host the ITU Winter Triathlon World Cup as part of the Pentathlon des neiges,” said François Calletta, Pentathlon Group producer and general manager. “It’s a highlevel competition that attracts elite athletes and is exciting to watch. A big ‘thank you’ to ITU for the trust they placed in us. We’re really happy to bring this great sport to Quebec City.” Elite Men’s Results 1. Maxime Leboeuf, Canada (QC) 2. Program: www.pentathlondesneiges.com About the Pentathlon Group The Pentathlon Group was founded in 2005 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing innovative sporting events with broad appeal and impact to offer participants an exciting and enriching experience. One of its flagship events is the Pentathlon des neiges, sanctioned by Triathlon Québec and the Quebec Speedskating Federation. The Penthalon des neiges presented by MEC is truly one of a kind. It is the biggest winter multisport event in the world. To complete the Pentathlon des neiges, athletes must perform five sports in succession—cycling, running, cross country skiing, skating, and snowshoeing—either solo, in tandem, or as part of a team. In 2014 the Pentathlon Group was the first in the world to present the International Triathlon Union’s new format of winter triathlon—snowshoeing, skating, and cross country skiing. -30- SOURCE: INFORMATION: Québec ITU Winter Triathlon Pentathlon Group Josée Massicotte 514-388-0169 or 514-915-0511/[email protected]
