Ce livre est un témoignage rare, celui d’un homme qui a côtoyé les plus grands
de son temps. « Le brave d’Aligny », comme l’appelait Louis XIV, a vingt ans
lorsqu’il se retrouve mousquetaire de la garde du roi sous les ordres du célèbre
d’Artagnan, avec lequel il noue une profonde amitié.
À la fin de sa vie, il entreprend de coucher ses souvenirs. Au fil des pages, il se révèle
un fin et mordant observateur de ses contemporains : le prince de Condé, Vauban,
Turenne, et Monsieur d’Artagnan, son « cher capitaine », mais aussi Louis XIV luimême et le « chevalier de Fourbin », son pire ennemi. Voici le Grand Siècle, comme
on ne l’avait jamais lu.
Pierre Quarré, comte d’Aligny, est né en 1642 dans le Morvan, dans une famille de la noblesse
de robe. Il a écrit ses Mémoires pour l’édification de ses enfants avant de mourir en 1730.
Odile Bordaz est historienne, spécialiste du XVIIe siècle et biographe de d’Artagnan.

This book is a rare testimony indeed: that of a man who closely frequented the greatest
people of his times. ‘Good old Aligny’, as Louis XIV called him, was twenty when
he found himself a musketeer in the King’s guard under the orders of the famous
d’Artagnan, with whom he developed a deep friendship.
At the end of his life, he decided to set down on paper his recollections. As the pages
turn, we discover a subtle and scathing observer of his contemporaries; the Prince
de Condé, Vauban, Turenne and his ‘beloved captain’ Monsieur d’Artagnan, as well as
Louis XIV himself and the ‘Chevalier de Fourbin’, his sworn enemy. The ‘Grand Siècle’
as it has never been told before.
Pierre Quarré, Count of Aligny, was born into a noble family in the Morvan in 1642. He
penned his Memoirs for the education of his children before his death in 1730.
Odile Bordaz is a historian, specialist of the 17th century and author of a biography of
d’Artagnan.

de l’histoire de la déportation en reconstituant à l’aide de documents inédits le
quotidien des musiciens des camps. Magnifique hommage à un continent perdu, cet
