Subject description : In 2013, the European Space Agency (ESA) has decided to fly a large size mission (around 1 billion euros) to fulfil the scientific objectives related to the 'The Gravitational Universe' https://www.elisascience.org/. The mission is scheduled for 2034, but the scientific community is working to anticipate the launch date. The implications of gravitational radiation have been observed through the variation of radio signals from stars, i.e. pulsars, in binary formation. Indeed, the emission of gravitational radiation implies an orbital shrinkage up to the coalescence of the two stars. Instead, for a direct detection, interferometers on Earth (French-Italian project Virgo, US project LIGO) attempt to observe the displacement of the end-mirrors due to an incoming gravitational wave. The latter are produced by a variety of sources, among which the Super-Massive Black Holes (SMBHs) at the centre of galaxies. When a Stellar-mass Compact Object (SCO) perturbs the -5 -2 spacetime of the SMBH, gravitational radiation is emitted. Its frequency is so low (10 – 10 Hz) that ground interferometers cannot detect the wave, but space interferometers can (free of seismic noise). These binary systems (SMBH + SCO) are called Extreme-Mass-Ratio Inspirals (EMRIs). EMRIs are a precision tool to study the geometry of black holes, test general relativity and alternative theories of gravity, map the centre of galaxies and reveal the accretion activity of the SMBHs. EMRIs emit long and complex signals in the strong field regime of the SMBHs. However, the extraction of the signals from the data stream requires the a priori knowledge of the waveforms, i.e. the templates. That is where the combination of theoretical physics, astrophysics, modelling and numerical computing is needed. The main goal of the thesis project is to make progress in the theoretical development of accurate models of the gravitational wave emitted by EMRIs using numerical simulations. The state of the art has recorded a sensible advance for non-rotating SMBHs, but more modest for rotating SMBHs. In both cases, the orbital evolution remains an open issue. The modelling of EMRIs requires knowledge and implementation of the self-force (i.e. the SCO motion corrected by the emitted radiation and the SCO mass itself). The SCO is represented by a point particle modelled by a Dirac delta distribution and its derivative. One problem is dealing with very different spatial scales, one associated with the modelling of the SCO and another associated with the SMBH. The Barcelona and Orléans groups have developed techniques to deal or avoid the issues related to the point-like representation of the SCO. The Barcelona team uses the ‘Particle-without-Particle’ (PwP) method, that substitutes the Dirac delta distribution by boundary conditions; thereby the numerical solution describes the field near the SCO, but avoids the SCO itself. In this way, the equations inside each subdomain are homogeneous wave type equations for the fields. Consequently, all the problems related with the numerical resolution of a small scale disappear. This technique was successfully applied to a simplified case, in which the gravitational field was static and corresponding to a non-rotating MBH and the dynamics was provided by a scalar field. The Orléans team uses the ‘Indirect’ method based on the jump conditions that the wavefunction and the perturbation have to satisfy. It has been applied to gravitational cases (radial including selfforce iteratively computed, and generic orbits without self-force). The project aims doing the computation in the Regge-Wheeler gauge where the main equation is of a wavetype but where the perturbations present an high degree of singularity (in contrast to current methods that use the Lorenz-de Donder – i.e. harmonic - gauge, where the singularities are of lesser degree but where a system of ten coupled equations replace the wave equation). The project requires a good knowledge of General Relativity and to master numerical techniques and highperformance computation. The doctorate student will become a member of the LISA France team http://www.apc.univ-paris7.fr/LISAFrance/Accueil.html. As such she/he will benefit of an additional mission budget and a network of laboratories of excellence.
