BIOGRAPHY – LUIZ DAVIDOVICH
Luiz Davidovich was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1946. He obtained his
Ph. D. at the University of Rochester, USA, in 1975, and is now a Full
Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. His areas of interest in
physics are quantum optics, quantum information, and foundations of
quantum mechanics, and he has supervised 19 Ph. D. and 14 M. Sc. theses.
He has worked in several institutions around the world, including Ecole
Normale Supérieure, Université de Paris VI, Collège de France, Max-Planck
Institute in Garching, Max Born Institute in Dresden, Isaac Newton Institute in
Cambridge, University of New Mexico, University of Texas A&M, and Institute
of Theoretical Physics in Santa Barbara, California.
He was awarded the Brazilian Grand-Cross of the National Order of Scientific
Merit in 2000, the 2001 Physics Prize of the Academy of Sciences for the
Developing World (TWAS), the Brazilian National Prize of Science "Admiral
Alvaro Alberto" in 2010, and elected foreign associate to the National
Academy of Sciences of the United States of America in 2006. He is a fellow
of the Optical Society of America and has been a member of the Executive
Board of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences since 2004.
He was a member of the Deliberative Council of the Brazilian National
Research Council (CNPq), from 2005 to 2009 and has been a member of the
Higher Council of CAPES (Ministry of Education), agency charged with the
support and evaluation of graduate schools in Brazil, which grants fellowships
for graduate students and also for recycling basic education teachers. He was
the head of the Brazilian Millenium Institute for Quantum Information, from
December 2001 to April 2006, and is now the Scientific Director of the
National Institute of Science and Technology for Quantum Information. Since
2011, he has been member of the board of the InterAcademy Council (IAP).
He was Secretary-General of the 4th National Conference on Science,
Technology, and Innovation, held in May 2011.

doctorat à l'Université de Rochester, Etats-Unis, en 1975, et est maintenant
professeur titulaire à l'Université fédérale de Rio de Janeiro. Ses domaines
d'intérêt en physique sont l'optique quantique, l’information quantique, et les
fondations de la mécanique quantique. Il a, à ce jour, dirigé 19 Ph. D. et 14 M.
Sc.. Il a travaillé dans plusieurs institutions à travers le monde, parmi
lesquelles l'Ecole Normale Supérieure, l’Université de Paris VI, le Collège de
France, l’Institut Max-Planck de Garching, l’Institut Max Born à Dresde,
l’Institut Isaac Newton à Cambridge, l'Université du Nouveau-Mexique,
l'Université de Texas A & M, et l'Institut de Physique Théorique à Santa
Barbara, en Californie.
Au Brésil, il a reçu la Grand-Croix de l'Ordre National du Mérite scientifique en
2000, le Prix 2001 de Physique de l'Académie des sciences pour le monde en
développement (TWAS), le Prix national brésilien de la Science "Alberto
amiral Alvaro" en 2010, et a été élu associé étranger de l'Académie Nationale
des Sciences des Etats-Unis d'Amérique en 2006. Il est également Fellow de
l'Optical Society of America et a été membre de la Direction de l'Académie
brésilienne des sciences depuis 2004.
Luis a été membre du Conseil délibératif du Conseil national brésilien de la
recherche (CNPq), de 2005 à 2009 et a été membre du Conseil supérieur de
la CAPES (Ministère de l'Education), organisme chargé de l'appui et de
l'évaluation des écoles supérieures au Brésil, qui accorde des bourses pour
les étudiants diplômés et aussi pour le recyclage des professeurs d'éducation
de base. Il a dirigé l'Institut brésilien du Millénaire pour l'information
quantique, de décembre 2001 à avril 2006, et est maintenant le directeur
scientifique de l'Institut National des Sciences et Technologies pour
l'Information Quantique. Depuis 2011, il est membre du conseil
d'administration du Conseil interacadémique (IAP), et a été secrétaire général
de la 4ème Conférence nationale pour la science, la technologie et
l'innovation, qui s'est tenue en mai 2010.
