Asian American Action Fund. Featured Board Member Irene Bueno, Esq. Our featured Board Member this month is former AAA-Fund Executive Director Irene Bueno. A lawyer by
training, she is the head of Bueno Strategies, a Washington, D.C. governmental relations firm. She also is a
principal at Nueva Vista Group, LLC, a consulting group she co-founded with Maria Echaveste, former Deputy
Chief of Staff at the White House.
History of Service
Irene has a long history of service to the Filipino American and broader Asian Pacific American communities.
Here in Washington, she has chaired the non-partisan Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership
(CAPAL), which helps APA students get jobs in government offices, and served on the District of Columbia
Commission on Asian Pacific Americans. She also has served many non-profits in California, where she was
born and raised.
Legislative and Executive Branch Experience
As a Board Member and former AAA-Fund Executive Director, Irene brings years of experience in both the
legislative and executive branches of our federal government.
A former top official in the Clinton Administration, she was Special Assistant to the President and worked in
both the White House Chief of Staff's Office and Domestic Policy Council.
She also served as Deputy Asst. Secy. for Legislation/Congressional Liaison at the United States Department of
Health and Human Services.
On Capitol Hill, Irene served as Legislative Assistant for both Senator Alan Cranston (D-CA) and Congressman
Edward Roybal (D-CA). She has many contacts on both the Republican and Democratic sides of the aisle, and
uses them to advance issues important to her Asian Pacific American and other clients.
Advocacy for Veterans,
Immigrants, and the Homeless
Two issues she cares about deeply are homelessness and justice for Filipino American World War II Veterans.
W. Genieys, Operationalizing Programmatic Elites Research in America, OPERA : ANR-‐08-‐BLAN-‐0032. 2 She has volunteered for the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless, and was a former board member at the
Dinner Program for Homeless Women.
When the Filipino American veterans came to Washington recently to demand health and other benefits
commensurate with their service alongside American soldiers during World War II, Irene was by their side as a
volunteer advocate and legislative strategy expert.
With her help, publicity was generated and more legislative co-sponsors were found. The battle is not yet won,
however, so she is already helping the veterans to plan for their next lobbying effort on the Hill.
Irene also works hard on behalf of immigration issues, with the goal of helping immigrants to realize the
American dream and become active members in American society.
Political Campaign Experience
APAs mounting campaigns for elective office can benefit from Ms. Bueno's work on many political campaigns,
including the Gore/Lieberman and Clinton/Gore Presidential campaigns, Mark Warner for Governor (VA), and
Gloria Ochoa for Congress (CA). She has worked on communications, fundraising, and Get Out The Vote
(GOTV) activities as a campaign staff member, and has shared her experience with many Asian Pacific
American candidates.
Outreach to Donors and Co-Sponsors
Among her jobs as an AAA-Fund Board Member and former Executive Director is reaching out to potential
donors and co-sponsors of AAA-Fund activities. In this capacity, Irene speaks regularly to student groups,
political clubs, and civic groups such as the Organization of Chinese Americans. She can be reached at
[email protected], for potential AAA-Fund funders or co-sponsors who have questions.
Personal Details
Irene is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, and the Hastings College of Law. She is married
to Jim Rothberg and resides in Washington, D.C.
