BATTERIE is a meeting, a duet between a drummer
and a dancer.
BATTERIE is an instrument - or rather, a kit of instruments - of music, or cooking.
BATTERIE is a series of movements in which the legs
beat.
BATTERIE is a fight, a battle, a quarrel.
BATTERIE is what we refill, or what is flat.
BATTERIE is the origin of these words BÂbord and
TRIbord, which allow to distinguish left to right on a
boat, Bâbord is left and TRIbord is right.

In this work the feeling is chilly, stripped of expression and sentimentality, but the dancers seem to give off waves
of heat. On their own or in pairs they open themselves up to the audience. It is fascinating, hypnotic. Here we dispense with the constant references to the media and our consumer-driven society, watching dancers channelling a
certain integrity, beauty and sensuality, dancers whose bodies have given up the fight. They are both naked and
clothed, alone in a sharp-edged, hostile environment, we cannot tear our eyes away. In this linear piece, his second,

BATTEMENT
• november, 30th 2010 • équinoxe • scène nationale de châteauroux
In August 2008, Jean-Marc Adolphe, Editor in Chief of the
magazine Mouvement, invited me to work with the group
SKITE/Sweet & Tender Collaborations, PORTO 2008. It is a
group of 46 artists working together over a 5 week period
in the same city in order to create new works.
I initiated with them a project I called BATTEMENT, questioning the quality of an abstract movement, the grand battement, the high-kicking, emblematic movement of classical
ballet. I immediately thought of the famous French cancan,
and also of specific movements used in the ritual of the
“changing of the guard,” in particular the Pakistani version
of that ritual. The idea of the project was to work from this
movement, establishing a dialogue between the three dancers

For my interpretation of this ballet, I want to run the idea of
a protean choreography, a coeducation of the styles, friction
between ballet and folk dances. I wish to emphasize the
games of " sounds and lights ", to invest the box of the
theater in all its dimension, in its horizontality but especially
in its verticality, by the use of the machinery, the “deus ex
machina”, appearances, disappearances.
Eight performers will be on stage, with whom I will question
the relationship between group and individual, present in
«The Nutcracker » and in the ballet more generally. We will
work on the notions of starification, selection, competition,
appropriated by the current television broadcasts, in which
everyone is allowed to be the new star of tomorrow. We will focus on the sports dances or “ball dances”, these
competition of ballroom dancing, where every couple wears a number in the back.
