Burns, Richard "Rick" - The death of Richard "Rick" Michael Burns of Fredericton
occurred on Tuesday, November 9, 2004 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional
Hospital, Fredericton, NB. Born in Middleton, NS, he was the son of Inez (Donoghue)
Burns and the late John H. Burns. Besides his mother, he is survived by one sister,
Cathy Lyons (Rod) of Fredericton.
He studied at the University of New Brunswick and after taking Kent Thompson's Creative
Writing course, had a number of short stories and plays produced on CBC Radio. He twice
participated in Theatre New Brunswick's Brave New Words.
After apprenticing with Rosemary James Cross, in the mid-seventies, Burns began painting
and sculpting. His first solo exhibit was at the Landmark Gallery in 1980, followed by an
extensive exhibition record, including a major solo exhibition and accompanying catalogue
published by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in 1992. His work is included in numerous
collections including the UNB Permanent collection, the NB Museum Collection, the Bank of
Montreal, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, the NB Art Bank and the Canada Council Art bank.
He received an Exploration Grant from Canada Council, four Creation Grants from the NB
Arts Branch, a grant from the NB Co-operation Agreement on Cultural Development and
the prestigious Strathbutler Award.
Rick was a founding member of Gallery Connexion and a driving force in the Fredericton
Art community. He taught drawing and mixed media painting at the NB College of Craft and
Design. Rick served as the visual arts representative on the New Brunswick Arts Board and
as an appointed member of the Cultural Task Force for the Province of New Brunswick.
The Beaverbrook Art Gallery's exhibition Rick Burns: Between Presence and Absence
December 10, 2006 - January 28, 2007 presented works by "this important Canadian artist,
works that make clear the wonderful legacy he has left. Whether working in charcoal,
wood, paint or metal, Burns was a poet, a philosopher, a craftsman."
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 13, 2004 at 11 am
from the St. Anthony's Church, Union Street, Fredericton. Father Monte Peters is the
Celebrant. For those who wish, remembrances to a charity of the donor's choice
would be appreciated by the family.


Fredericton (Nouveau-Brunswick). Né à Middleton (Nouvelle-Écosse), il était le fils
de Inez (Donoghue) Burns et de feu John H. Burns. Outre sa mère, il laisse dans le
deuil une soeur, Cathy Lyons (Rod) de Fredericton.
Il a étudié à la University of New Brunswick et après avoir pris des cours d'écriture créative
de Kent Thompson, avait un certain nombre de nouvelles (short story) et de pièces de
théâtre produit sur Radio-Canada. Il a participé deux fois dans Brave New Words du
Théâtre Nouveau-Brunswick.
Après l'apprentissage avec Rosemary James Cross, dans le milieu des années soixante-dix,
Burns a commencé à peindre et sculpter. Sa première exposition individuelle a été à la
Galerie Landmark en 1980, suivie d'un enregistrement d'une vaste exposition, y compris
une importante exposition personnelle et qui accompagne le catalogue édité par la Galerie
d'Art Beaverbrook en 1992. Son travail est inclus dans de nombreuses collections, dont la
collection permanente de UNB, la Collection du Musée NB, la Banque de Montréal, la Galerie
d'Art Beaverbrook, le NB Art Bank et le Canada Council Art Bank.
Il a reçu une subvention d’exploration du Conseil du Canada, quatre bourses de création de
la direction des Arts NB, une subvention de l'accord de coopération sur le développement
culturel et le prestigieux prix Strathbutler NB.
Rick a été un membre fondateur de la Galerie Connexion et une force motrice dans la
communauté artistique de Fredericton. Il a enseigné le dessin et peinture technique mixte
au New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. Rick a été le représentant des arts visuels
sur le Conseil des Arts du Nouveau-Brunswick et un membre nommé du groupe de travail
culturel pour la Province du Nouveau-Brunswick.
Exposition de la Galerie d'Art Beaverbrook Rick Burns : entre présence et Absence, 10
décembre 2006 - 28 janvier 2007 a présenté des œuvres par "cette artiste canadien
important, les œuvres qui font clairement l'héritage merveilleux il a laissé. Que ce soit dans
le charbon de bois, de bois, de peinture ou de métal, Burns était un poète, un philosophe, un
artisan. »
Une messe Catholique a eu lieu le samedi 13 novembre 2004 à 11:00 de l'église de la
St. Anthony, Union Street, Fredericton. Père Monte Peters était le célébrant.
