Project Description:
Goal : Reduce the prevalence of HIV in specific populations in El
Salvador.
The Project develops, implements, and monitors interventions that
address HIV prevention in three key populations: men who have sex with
men (MSM); transgender population; and female sex workers (FSW). In
terms of geographic coverage, the program focuses on the regions with
highest HIV prevalence. The prevention strategy is rooted in a
combination of behavioural and biomedical interventions and integrates
human rights and community systems across all modules. It aims to bring
services closer to risk groups with more continuous support and
differentiate needs of MSM, transgender population and FSW.
Accordingly, separate community centers for MSM, transgender
population and FSW will be established in collaboration with grass-roots
organizations. The interns will be supported by Plan El Salvador to work
with the grass-roots organzations working directly with the key
populations.
Position Description:
The intern will work with local NGO partners working with gay, bisexual
and other men who have sex with men (MSM), transgender, and female
sex worker populations to:





Provide research and technical experience to support the current
Combined HIV Prevention package being implemented through
the current Global Fund to Fight AIDS TB and Malaria grant
Contribute to the identification and assessment of LGBT and sex
worker related health, human rights and social service needs
Participate in the development and implementation of HIV
behavior change interventions
Train in the use of the current Grant Monitoring and Evaluation
System and support grassroots partners its effective use and
implementation
Support knowledge translation and exchange opportunities
between Canadian HIV organizations related to promising and
best practices relevant to El Salvador’s “most at-risk populations”
Qualifications:


College or university degree, ideally in Public Health, International
Development, Adult Education, Human Rights Law.
Strong research skills with interest in community based research.





Exceptional communication skills in English and Spanish
Demonstrated interest in community-based health promotion
programming
Strong familiarity with LGBT and female sex worker populations
and related health and human rights issues, ideally in Latin
America
Understanding of the basic tenets of rights-based programming in
international and community development
Experience living, working or traveling abroad, ideally in Latin
America
Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible for the International Youth Internship Program, you must:





be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident
be a post-secondary graduate—graduate of a degree or diploma
program from a university, college, post-secondary school of
technology, post-secondary institute or a CEGEP (collège
d'enseignement général et professionnel)
be between the ages of 19 and 30
have not previously participated in an internship within DFATD's
IYIP initiative
be legally entitled to work in Canada

Plan El Salvador has been in operation since 1976. For 35 years, the
organization has helped children and adolescents in underdeveloped or
vulnerable areas of the country to access their rights to health, education,
protection and sustainable livelihoods. During that period of time, Plan has
invested 145 million USD into El Salvador. Today Plan El Salvador works
with almost 42,000 sponsored children across the country, and has a
growing portfolio of institutional grants. Plan El Salvador is part of the
larger entity, Plan International, which is a global international
development organization focusing on rights-based approaches related to
ensuring that all children realise their full potential in societies that respect
people's rights and dignity.
