En 1863, Louis-Joseph Guyot hérite du château médiéval de Dourdan dans l’Essonne :
il en fait sa villégiature puis progressivement l’objet de ses investigations, de ses lubies
et le lieu d’application de ses recherches. Conscient de l’intérêt public du patrimoine
monumental dont il est dépositaire, Louis-Joseph Guyot s’investit dans la connaissance,
la valorisation et la sauvegarde du passé dourdannais. Il fait partie de ces acteurs
locaux et privés, travaillant dans l’ombre des institutions officielles, dont l’histoire
n’a pas retenu le nom ; pourtant son œuvre est loin d’être négligeable. Cet article
appréhende la logique de son entreprise et entend aussi faire apprécier l’ampleur
d’une démarche individuelle qui s’inscrit pleinement dans le contexte de prise de
conscience patrimoniale développée au XIXe siècle.
The patrimonial undertaking of Louis-Joseph Guyot (1836-1924)
at Dourdan, between erudition and outreach
In 1863 Louis-Joseph Guyot inherited the medieval Château de Dourdan in the Essonne
department: he made it his holiday home then progressively the object of his investigations and
whims and the place where he applied his research. Aware that the built heritage of which he
was the trustee was of public interest, Louis-Joseph Guyot devoted himself to the promotion
and conservation of the Dourdan past. He was one of the local, private actors, working in
the shadow of official institutions, whose name has not gone down in history; and yet his work
was far from insignificant. This article comprehends the logic of his undertaking and also aims
to communicate the scope of an individual action that was part of the growing awareness of
cultural heritage in the nineteenth century.
