Eros & Psyche
Theatre of Sexuality
Considering sexuality as teatrum mundi
• we are given roles to play (the baroque notion: Epictète, Calderon,
Shakespeare, Corneille, etc.)
• we are “fooled” by Nature into reproduction (tragi-comedy). Jealousy.
Sexual intercourse as a philosophical performance too
• Questioning the roles, questioning the scenarios: contra natura
• we “fool” nature in return (we appropriate – steal? - the pleasure – physical
and psychical) and discard the reproduction. (The Sacrament of Abortion.)
• What is sex trying to tell us ? – the sexual act is our 'knowing' machine.
Laurence Durrell.
The role of Eros in this teatrum mundi : arrow, penis, phalus.
Arrow is a selective choice (used by Eros – shaman & algorithm)
Darwin’s reproductive (survival) selection
and Tiresias
Tiresias
Famous soothsayer (deviner) from Thebes who was blinded after seeing Athena
take a bath. He revealed to Oedipus the reality of his oracle. He was the dead
shadow that Odysseus consulted when he descended into the Underworld.
Tiresias was once out on a walk, when he saw two snakes mating. He sat
watching for hours, when the snakes sensed his presence, they attacked him.
Tiresias managed to kill the female, and at the same moment he killed her, he
turned into a woman.
As a woman Tiresias became a prostitute of great fame for seven years. Then,
one day, the episode with the snake was repeated, but this time he killed the
male, and so turned back into a man.
When Zeus and Hera had a couple quarrel on who has most pleasure during
sexual intercourse they decided to let Tiresias judge, since he had experienced
both. Hera insisted men enjoy sex more, while Zeus claimed the opposite.
Tiresias then said, that if sexual pleasure could be put on a scale from one to ten,
then men were at one, and women at three times three.
This made Hera so furious she blinded Tiresias, but Zeus gave him inner sight
(wisdom and the ability to see the future) and extended his life with seven
generations.
Binary oppositional thinking (especially moral: good or evil – & the
fusion of opposites.)
Dialectics : the notion of sublation (Aufhebung Hegel / Wolfgang
Giegerich)
Baroque non-oppositional thinking. Not fusion, nor sublation but
mise en abyme (postmodernist deconstruction?)
The binary nature of SEX : male / female roles
