Der Verein
Wings for handicapped e.V. wurde als reiner Flugsportverein im April 2000 von Jörg Leonhardt
gegründet.
Beflügelt von der Kreativität seiner Mitglieder erschloss der Verein bald weitere Dimensionen. So
wurde Wings for handicapped e.V. inzwischen zu einem gemeinnützigen Rehabilitations-und
Behindertensportverein erweitert.
Jörg Leonhardt ist seit seinem 18. Lebensjahr durch einen Autounfall querschnittsgelähmt. Seine
Aktivitäten machen deutlich, dass man auch mit einer Behinderung seine Träume verwirklichen kann.
Er fährt Motorboot und Motorrad, taucht, springt Fallschirm, geht mit einem Ultraleichtflugzeug oder
Drachen in die Lüfte und nahm als Vize-Europameister im Rollstuhlbasketball an den Paralympics in
Sydney teil.
2002 stellte sich Wings for handicapped e.V. einer außergewöhnlichen Herausforderung und
übernahm die Ausrichtung der Rollstuhlbasketball Europameisterschaften der Junioren in Frankfurt
am Main.
In kürzester Zeit wurden Geldgeber und eine Spielstätte gefunden, Pressekonferenzen einberufen und
Institutionen, wie integrative Schulen, in die Organisation einbezogen. Die Frankfurter Allgemeine
Zeitung (FAZ) titelte: „Nur der Parkettboden fehlte zur Perfektion“.
Es zeigte sich einmal mehr, dass man durch Aktionen Behinderte nicht nur stärker in das öffentliche
Leben integriert, sondern auch Menschen die Angst nehmen kann, mit Behinderungen bzw.
Behinderten umzugehen.
Was wir wollen
Das Ziel der neuen Aktion von Wings for handicapped e.V. ist es, behinderten und schwerkranken
Kindern Abwechslung und Spaß zu bieten. Hierzu wurde ein Schlauchboot mit Außenbordmotor
beschafft: Die „Hoppetosse“.
Die „Hoppetosse“ wurde nach dem Schiff von Pippi Langstrumpf, der berühmten Kinderbuchfigur
Astrid Lindgrens, benannt. Pippi Langstrumpf, das „stärkste Mädchen der Welt“, schreckt vor Nichts
und Niemandem zurück und macht das Unmögliche möglich.
Wings for handicapped e.V. möchte die Kinder zusammen mit ihren Eltern zu einem kostenfreien
Ausflug auf nahe gelegenen Gewässern einladen. Die „Hoppetosse“ soll zum Schauplatz eines
gemeinsamen Abenteuers werden. Egal wie stark oder schwach der Einzelne ist, bei dieser Aktion
kommen alle Teilnehmer gleich schnell voran. Die Kinder können erfahren, dass Grenzen überwunden
werden können, dadurch ihr Selbstwertgefühl stärken und natürlich viel Spaß dabei haben.
Die Aktion hat großen Zuspruch der Betroffenen erhalten und wird von zahlreichen Prominenten aus
Sport und Kultur unterstützt.

The organization
In April 2000, Jörg Leonhardt founded the registered organization Wings for handicapped e.V.,
specifically for aviation sport.
Spurred on by “the sky’s the limit” motto of the current 46 members, the group rapidly sought new
horizons. In the meantime, the aviation club has grown into a non-profit organization for rehabilitation
and disability sports.
Jörg Leonhardt himself has been a paraplegic since he was 18, the result of an auto accident.
However, since then his activities prove that dreams can come true.
He not only skippers a motorboat, but also motorcycles and skin-dives. He defies gravity in ultralight
airplanes, as a paraglider, and he is an accomplished parachutist. He was a semi-finalist in the
European Championships in wheelchair basketball, and he played in the 2000 Sydney Paralympic
Games.
In 2002, Wings for handicapped e.V. faced the exceptional challenge of organising the Junior
European Championships in wheelchair basketball in Frankfurt/Main.
They were quick to find financial donors and facilities and to involve the media. Most importantly,
institutions such as integrative schools were included in the organizing committee. The national
newspaper “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” headlined: “Perfection – only the hardwood floor was
missing”.
This initiative proved once again that special events are the perfect tool to increase the integration of
people with a disability in the community and to reduce the general hesitation of the public towards
actively approaching people with a disability.
What we want to achieve
With its new campaign, Wings for handicapped e.V. aims to provide a fun and unique experience for
handicapped and severely ill children. We have purchased an inflatable dingy with an outboard motor:
The “Hoppetosse”.
The “Hoppetosse” has been named after Pipi Longstocking’s boat. Pipi Longstocking is the famous
character in the childrens’ book by author Astrid Lindgren. Pipi, “the strongest girl in the world”, fears
nothing and no one, and makes the impossible possible.
Wings for handicapped e.V. invites children and parents to a day of adventure on the water at nearby
locations, free-of-charge. The “Hoppetosse” will be the stage for a shared adventure. It doesn’t matter
how strong or how weak the individual may be. Together everyone moves ahead at the same speed!
While they are having fun, the children learn that limitations can be overcome and their self-esteem is
boosted.
Overwhelming enthusiasm and support has been the response of everyone involved, including
celebrities from sports and the arts.

L’association
Wings for handicapped e.V. a été fondée par Jörg Leonhardt en avril 2000 en tant que pure
association de sports aériens.
Dotée de la créativité de ses actuels 46 adhérents , l’association a vite élargi ses horizons d’activité et
est devenue une association sportive reconnue d’utilité publique pour les handicapés et leur
réhabilitation.
Suite à un accident de voiture, Jörg Leonhardt est paraplégique depuis ses 18 ans. Ses activités
prouvent qu’il est possible de réaliser ses rêves même en étant handicapé.
Il fait de la moto, du bâteau à moteur, de la plongée sous-marine, saute en parachute et prend son
envol à bord d’un ULM ou d’un deltaplane. Vice-champion d’Europe de basketball en fauteuil roulant,
il a également participé aux Jeux Paralympiques de Sydney.
En 2002, Wings for handicapped e.V. se lança un défi peu ordinaire et organisa les championnats d’
Europe juniors de basketball en fauteuil roulant à Francfort sur le Main.
Un sponsor et une salle de sports furent trouvés en peu de temps, des conférences de presse furent
organisées et des institutions comme par exemple des écoles intégratives furent associées à
l’organisation. Le quotidien "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" titra: "Seul le parquet n’était pas parfait".
Cela montra une fois de plus que, grâce à de tels évènements, les handicapés sont non seulement
beaucoup plus intégrés dans la vie publique, mais aussi que cela aide les gens dans leurs relations
avec les personnes handicapées.
Ce que nous voulons
Le nouveau défi de Wings for handicapped e.V. est de permettre aux enfants handicapés et
gravement malades de se divertir et de s’amuser. Pour cela, l’association s’est procurée d’un horsbord baptisé "Hoppetosse".
Le nom "Hoppetosse" vient du bâteau de Pippi Langstrumpf, le célèbre personnage pour enfants d’
Astrid Lindgrens. Pippi Langstrumpf, "la plus courageuse petite fille du monde", n’a peur de rien ni de
personne et rend possible l’impossible.
Wings for handicapped e.V. aimerait inviter les enfants et leurs parents à une excursion gratuite sur
les eaux environnantes. "L’Hoppetosse" deviendra le théâtre d’une aventure commune. Peu importe
si certains sont plus faibles que d’autres, grâce à cette action, tous les participants feront des progrès.
Les enfants apprendront que les limites peuvent être repoussées ce qui ne pourra que renforcer leur
amour-propre et leur faire plaisir.
Ce projet a été très bien accueilli par les intéressés et est soutenu par grand nombre de personnalités
du monde du sport et de la culture.
