Presentation :
Stéphan Oliva is a famous pianist coming from the end of the1980s because of
his techniques and his touch of a large sensibility. His discographic career is
quietly greeted by the press: “Django d’or-espoir” (Django of the gold-hope) in

1992, four times “Choc de l’année” (Impact of the year) in the magazine
Jazzman (1998, 2000, 2002, 2004), prized by the Boris Vian of the academy of
jazz in 2002, “Coup de Coeur” (hit of the heart) of the academy Charles Cros in
2004, top 20 of the best Inrockuptibles in 2007…the passionate film-goer, he
took part (in 1997) in the collection “Jazz’n (e) motion” which congregated
some piano’s improvisations music in the films. His first collaboration with the
film-maker Jacques Maillot is for the film “Froid comme l’été” (cold like winter)
in 2003 (Italian prize), and now his last film “Les Liens du Sang” (the
blood-relations).
The instrumentation of the music in the film “Les Liens du Sang” refunds the
typical colour of the films at the end of 70s, with a Fender Rhodes, guitar,
electrical bass and a drum led like in the era, but all the treated here without
the clich. For the personage of Gabriel (François Cluzet), Stéphan Oliva has
associated with a texture of rock, while for François (Guillaume Canet) the
music is more introverted. The principal theme that comes back by the
numbers when the two brothers are together, frequently used in the emotional
opposition with the action and a more acoustic instrumentation, is more
timeless and out of the precise music style. A waltz comes or goes with the
dreams of another life for constructing the symbolisation by the suburban
tavern… Writing the music of this film has been for Stéphan Oliva to weave
some bonds and build up psychological backdrop and the emotional
intensification between the personages and the inexorable deadlock of those
events.”
