Securing the unique musical archives of BAPMAF
Prof. John Collins roughly estimates that about 10% of the the Bokoor African Popular
Music Archives Foundation (BAPMAF) archives were destroyed beyond repair due to
severe flooding on 26 October 2011. The damage was even aggravated since more and more p
eople are blocking natural water ways with illegal settlements or waste dumping and
excessive water flooded into the surrounding areas.
Door and window frames were severely damaged by water absorption and need to be replaced.
Unfortunately, one of the areas that suffered the most severe damages was the visual/ audio room
where the team digitized music from old records and old documents.
The existence of BAPMAF?s collection, consisting of 1,200 photographs and slides, 700 pu
blications, hundreds of rare and old documents and 1,500 hours of recorded music; including
almost a thousand old highlife songs on shellac and vinyl records was jeopardized. CER supports
the BAPMAF archives to rehabilitate the building in which the archives are kept and replacement
of lost equipment to digitalize and safeguard the collection for good.
The BAPMAF archive holds unique information which is not available elsewhere. BAPMAF is
consulted often by national and international organisations and is seen as the best source
available on the history and development of Highlife in the African continent. Highlife as a
musical form is illustrative for Ghana?s and Pan-African independence and development that ca
me from this new gained freedom.

Programme: CER
