Learn the history of
Saint-Laurent du Maroni
Commune pénitentiaire
On the 23rd of August 1857,
Major Mélinon established an
agricultural penitentiary colony,
named Saint-Laurent du Maroni
in 1858.
On the 23rd of August 1857,
Major Mélinon established an
agricultural penitentiary colony,
named Saint-Laurent du Maroni in
1858. This became a penitentiary
commune in 1880 – a unique status
in France at the time. From then
on, 70,000 prisoners transported,
relegated and politically deported
from mainland France, along with
colonial convicts, were sent to the
prison camps of French Guiana.
Upon arrival in Saint-Laurent du
Maroni, the prisoners were sent to
camps known as annexes, situated
on the Prison Camp territory, or
even to the Salut Islands.

France. Dès lors, 70.000 transportés,
relégués et déportés politiques
métropolitains, mais aussi des
condamnés coloniaux sont envoyés
dans les bagnes de Guyane. Une fois
arrivés à Saint-Laurent du Maroni,
les bagnards sont envoyés au sein
des Camps dits annexes situés sur
le territoire de la Pénitentiaire, ou
encore aux Iles du Salut.

Parallèlement
à
cette
implantation coloniale sur le
territoire guyanais, le bassin du
Maroni est quant à lui un espace
de refuge pour les Noirs Marrons
et les Amérindiens.
L’estuaire est peuplé d’Amérindiens
Kali’na et Lokono. Plus en amont du
fleuve habitent les Noirs Marrons,
populations descendantes d’esclaves
ayant fui les plantations : les
Paramaka, les Ndjuka et les Boni,
et enfin les Amérindiens Wayana,
Teko, Tilio. Avec la ruée vers l’or
sur le Haut-Maroni de 1880-1888,
Saint-Laurent du Maroni devient une
étape importante dans ce commerce.

venus des Antilles, et de Chine via le
Surinam.
At the same time as this colonial
settlement developed on French
Guiana territory, the Maroni basin
itself became an area of refuge
for Black Maroons and indigenous
peoples.
The estuary was populated by
Kali’na and Lokono indigenous
tribes. Further up the river lived
the Black Maroons, a population
descended from slaves who had
fled plantations: the Paramaka, the
Ndjuka and the Boni, as well as the
Wayana, Teko and Tilio Indians
tribes. With the gold rush to the
Upper Maroni between 1880 and
1888, Saint-Laurent du Maroni
became a significant place in the
gold trade. The colonial village
became populated by traders from
diverse origins, including West
Indian and Chinese, who arrived via
Surinam.
It was only when the prison
camp was closed that indigenous
populations, Maroons and former
gold prospectors from Maroni came
to live in the city, which had become
the sub-prefecture of the French
Guiana department in 1946, the year
the prison camps of French Guiana
closed. The city’s population became
even more diverse with the arrival of
migrants from even further away:
from mainland France, Surinam and
French Guiana, Haiti, Brazil, China
and Laos, with the arrival of the
Hmong in Javouhey in 1979.

Entre 1852 et 1938, environ 70 000 bagnards sont
envoyés en Guyane. En 1938, un décret loi abolit le bagne
sous l’influence de Gaston Monnerville, alors Député
de Guyane. Il faudra attendre la fin de la 2ème Guerre
Mondiale pour que les bagnes ferment définitivement
leurs portes.

A Saint-Laurent du Maroni, le Camp de la Transportation
est progressivement abandonné et racheté par un
commerçant du village, M.Tanon. De 1949 à 1992, les cases
du Camp de la Transportation sont occupées par des
créoles et noirs-marrons installés en Ville suite au déclin
de l’orpaillage sur le Haut-Maroni. En 1992, le Camp est
racheté par la commune et classé Monument Historique
en 1995. En lançant les travaux de restauration dans ce
lieu chargé d’histoire et de souffrance, la municipalité et
la direction des affaires culturelles, inversent le symbole
en faisant de ce lieu un lieu dédié à la culture et au
patrimoine.
Between 1852 and 1938, approximately 70,000 prisoners were sent to French Guiana. In 1938,
a legal decree abolished the prison camp under the order of Gaston Monnerville, Deputy of
French Guiana at the time. However, it was not until the end of the 2nd World War that the
prison camps were permanently closed. In Saint-Laurent du Maroni, the Transportation Camp was
progressively abandoned and bought by a trader in the village, Mr Tanon. Between 1949 and 1992,
the Transportation Camp huts were occupied by Creoles and Black Maroons who had settled in the
city following the decline of gold washing in the upper Maroni area. In 1992, the Camp was bought
by the commune; it was classed as an Historical Monument in 1995. By launching restoration works
in this area charged with history and suffering, the local council and directorate of cultural affairs are
symbolically inversing its meaning, by making it a place dedicated to culture and heritage.

Plusieurs espaces d’exposition permanents au Camp de la Transportation
L’ancienne cuisine du Camp de la Transportation est dédiée au quotidien des 70.000 bagnards
qui furent envoyés en Guyane de 1852 à 1938. Ce parcours d’exposition relate à travers des images
d’archives, des objets et des photographies inédites le voyage de St Martin de Ré à Saint-Laurent-duMaroni, la vie au bagne, mais aussi le combat de personnes illustres pour son abolition.
Deux cases - anciennement dortoirs destinés aux transportés de 1ère et 2ème classe - présentent
deux espaces d’exposition consacrés à la ville de Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni.Ainsi, découvrez l’histoire
de la Ville à travers le regard des saint-laurentais, mais aussi son architecture et ses projets et défis
de demain.
Several exhibition rooms to the Transportation Camp
The old kitchen of the Transportation Camp is dedicated to the daily life of the 70 000 convicts who
were sent to French Guiana between 1952 and 1938. This exhibition provides a testimony about
life in Prison through archives movies, objects and unreleased pictures of the travel from St Martin
de Ré to Saint-Laurent du Maroni. It also tells the struggle of famous people to abolish the Prison.
Two buildings – former dormitories intended for the « transported » from 1st and 2nd class
convicts - show two exhibition rooms dedicated to the city of Saint-Laurent du Maroni. Discover
the story of the city through the Saint-Laurent inhabitant’s eyes, but also the architecture, the
projects and challenges of tomorrow.

A 17 km de Saint-Laurent du Maroni, l’Association MEKI WI LIBI NA WAN vous fait découvrir
le Camp de la Relégation de Saint-Jean. Les relégués surnommés « Pieds de biche », étaient des
multirécidivistes qui avaient commis de menus larcins.
A visiter aussi : le cimetière des relégués.
Located 17 km from Saint-Laurent du Maroni, the Meki Wi Libi Na Wan Association organises
visits around the Saint-Jean Penal Camp. The detainees, nicknamed “Crowbars”, were habitual
re-offenders who had committed petty crimes.
Another place to visit: the cemeteries of detainees.

La Guyane, terre d’Amérique du Sud et département français d’Outre-Mer, est couvert
à 90% par la forêt amazonienne. On recense en Amazonie française plus de 1300 essences
de bois précieux, une flore luxuriante, 170 espèces de mammifères et 740 espèces d’oiseaux.
L’Ouest de la Guyane n’est pas en reste. Saint-Laurent du Maroni, située entre fleuve et forêt,
est une ville riche par son patrimoine architectural, mais aussi par son patrimoine naturel. La
forêt amazonienne vous plonge dans un océan de verdure et de sérénité. Le Piauhau hurleur*
annonce votre visite au cœur de la jungle. Tendez l’oreille et laissez-vous enchanter par les
bruits de la forêt !
Des professionnels vous guideront. L’expérience et les connaissances du guide vous
permettront de mieux découvrir cet environnement et cette faune discrète, mais bien présente.
L’œil et l’oreille aux aguets vous partirez sur les traces du jaguar...
Un certain nombre de précautions sont à prendre avant une excursion en forêt. Elles sont
similaires à celles d’une balade sur le fleuve. Nous vous invitons à les retrouver en page 19.

French Guiana, land of South America and Overseas French Department, is
covered by 90% of Rain Forest. More than 1300 species of precious trees, a luxuriant
flora, 170 species of mammals and 740 species of birds can be found in French Amazonia.
The West part of French Guiana is between the river and the forest. Saint-Laurent du
Maroni is therefore a rich town thanks to its architectural heritage but also thanks to its
natural diversity. The Amazon rain forest puts you in a sea of greenery and serenity. The

Professionals guide you through the forest. Experience and knowledge of the guide will
help you better discover this environment and its wildlife not often visible, but real. Walk
with your eyes wide open and ears on alert you will go on the trail of the jaguar…
A number of precautions must be taken before an excursion in the forest. They are similar
to a ride on the river. We invite you to find them on page 19. Preserve nature, consider
bringing back your waste!

l La forêt de Saint-Jean / Saint-Jean forest
Le camp forestier de Saint-Jean du Maroni fut créé par l’Administration
Pénitentiaire au début du siècle, et était relié à Saint-Laurent du Maroni par
chemin de fer. Aujourd’hui, au fil du parcours, les traces de cette époque sont
encore visibles.
The forest camp of Saint-Jean du Maroni was created by the Penitentiary
Administration at the beginning of the century, and was connected to SaintLaurent du Maroni by rail. Today, on your journey, you can see that traces of
that time are still visible.
l Les chutes Voltaire / Voltaire waterfalls
Avec un dénivelé de 35 mètres sur une distance de 200 mètres, les chutes Voltaire
sont parmi les plus belles cascades d’eau de Guyane.
Accès en 4X4 recommandé !
With a drop of 35 metres, over a distance of 200 metres, the Voltaire waterfalls
are among the most beautiful waterfalls in French Guiana.

l La crique Tatou / Tatou cove
Cette crique se situe en bordure de la piste Paul Isnard, pour se rendre aux
chutes Voltaire. Détente, pique-nique, baignade, sont les activités à pratiquer
sur le site.
This cove is situated next to the Paul Isnard runway, on the way to the Voltaire
waterfalls. Relaxation, picnicking and swimming are among the activities you
can enjoy here.

Cette crique est située à une vingtaine de kilomètres de Saint-Laurent du Maroni
sur la route d’Apatou. Détente, pique-nique et baignade au programme.
This cove is located around 20 kilometres from Saint-Laurent du Maroni along
Apatou road. Relaxation, picnicking and swimming are among the activities
you can enjoy here.
l “L’île aux Lépreux” / “the Leprous island”
Sur cette île étaient isolés autrefois les bagnards atteints de la lèpre. Aujourd’hui,
ce site, idéal pour pique-niquer sous un carbet et passer une journée de farniente,
laisse derrière lui cette image de terre d’exil pour malades. Vous pourrez y
accéder en pirogue en contactant l’un des prestataires de la rubrique Maroni
(page 21-22).
In the past, prisoners with leprosy were relegated to this island. Today, this site,
which is ideal for picnicking under a karbay open shelter and generally spending
a lazy day, leaves you with an image of an area of exile for the diseased. You can
get there by pirogue, by contacting one of the pirogue services listed under the
Maroni heading (page 21-22).

A bord d’une pirogue, lutter contre les courants au passage des sauts sur
le plus grand fleuve de Guyane (520 Km), puis établir son campement au
milieu de la forêt, pêcher dans une crique, dormir dans un hamac sous un
carbet…Aller au bout de ses émotions, ça c’est déjà l’aventure !
Excursions de 2h00 à la demi-journée, longs séjours sur le fleuve Maroni et
Mana ou en forêt, un large choix s’offre à vous. N’hésitez pas à demander
conseil aux hôtesses. Les brochures de chaque prestataire sont disponibles à
l’accueil.
On a pirogue, strive against the currents and bends on the largest river
in French Guiana (520 km), then set up camp in the middle of the forest,
go fishing in a cove, sleep in a hammock under a karbay, explore intense
sensations.That is what adventure is all about!
Excursions ranging from 2 hours to half days, long stays on the Maroni and
Mana rivers or in the forest – a wide range of choices is available. Do not
hesitate to ask for advice from the reception desk. Brochures of each service
