Biography
Pia Raeymaekers is a Flemish artist who studied glass art and techniques at Sint-Lucas Institute in Ghent,
at the University of Sunderland,UK and in the Czech Republic. Afterwards, she moved to Northern Ireland,
where she has been artist-in-residence at the Flowerfield Arts Centre in Portstewart from 2009 till 2012.
In 2012, she moved to Antwerp.
Concept
Her imagination is fired by the inspiring landscape and open spaces of the Antrim coast, and more
specifically by nature and marine life.
Pia’s glass sculptures are based on anemones and sea urchins and the vulnerability they have to contend
with: sometimes protected by their shells, but also under constant threat from their environment. She
likes to play with the limitations of the material. The organic forms are determined by the way in which
she works the glass. Instead of trying to imitate nature, she incorporates her own interpretation of
various coastal elements into her work. The staggering beauty of the Irish marine life and magical rock
formations captivated her and created such a stimulating environment for her art work she decided to
live there.

maritieme leven’
Biografie
Pia Raeymaekers is een Vlaamse kunstenares die glaskunst en technieken studeerde aan het
Sint-Lucas Instituut in Gent, aan de Universiteit van Sunderland, Verenigd Koninkrijk en in de
Tsjechische Republiek. Daarna verhuisde ze naar Noord-Ierland, waar ze ‘artist-in-residence’
was bij de ‘Flowerfield Arts Centre’ in Portstewart van 2009 tot 2012. In 2012 verhuisde ze
naar Antwerpen.
Concept
Haar verbeelding wordt aangewakkerd door het inspirerende landschap en de open ruimte
aan de kust van Antrim, en in het bijzonder door de natuur en het leven in zee.
Pia's glassculpturen zijn gebaseerd op anemonen en zee-egels en de kwetsbaarheid waar ze
mee te kampen hebben: soms beschermd door een schelp, maar ook onder constante
dreiging van hun omgeving. Ze houdt ervan om te spelen met de beperkingen van het
materiaal. De manier waarop ze het glas bewerkt, resulteert in een organische vorm. In
plaats van te proberen om de natuur na te bootsen, neemt ze haar eigen interpretatie van
de verschillende elementen aan de kust in haar werk. De duizelingwekkende schoonheid van
het Ierse zeeleven en de magische rotsformaties bleven haar boeien en de veroorzaakte zo'n
een stimulerende omgeving voor haar kunst dat ze besloten heeft om er een hele tijd te
wonen.

Biographie
Pia Raeymaekers est une artiste flamande qui a étudié l'art du verre et des techniques à
l’institut Sint-Lucas à Gand, à l'Université de Sunderland, au Royaume-Uni et en République
tchèque. Par la suite, elle a déménagé en Irlande du Nord, où elle a été artiste en résidence
au Centre d'Arts Flowerfield à Portstewart à partir de 2009 jusqu'en 2012. En 2012, elle
s'est installée à Anvers.
Concept
Son imagination est alimentée par les paysages grandioses et les espaces ouverts de la côte
d'Antrim, et plus précisément par la nature et la vie marine.
Les sculptures de verre de Pia sont basées sur les anémones et les oursins et sur la
vulnérabilité avec laquelle ils doivent vivre: parfois protégés par leurs coquilles, mais aussi
sous la menace constante de leur environnement. Elle aime jouer avec les limites de la
matière. Les formes organiques sont déterminées par la manière dont elle travaille le verre.
Au lieu d'essayer d'imiter la nature, elle intègre sa propre interprétation de divers éléments
côtiers dans son travail. La beauté stupéfiante de la vie marine irlandaise et les formations
rocheuses magiques l’ont captivée et ont cré un environnement si stimulant pour son travail
artistique, qu’elle a décidé de s’y installer pendant une longue période.
