INTERNATIONAL TRIENNIAL
DESIGN & SOCIAL INNOVATION
1/10 - 1/11/2015
RECIPROCITY design liège was inspired by the place
where it originated: Liege, ‘The Ardent City’, a pool of
creativity at the heart of Wallonia. Central to this event is the
desire to build strong relationships, encourage exchange,
stimulate debate and support innovation. And I would like
to thank all the stakeholders that have got involved to make
it happen: the galleries, the heritage sites, the museums,
our financial and cultural partners, the public places...
and most importantly, the people of Liege. Thanks
to their efforts, and acts of collaboration that have
defined the very theme of social innovation instilled in
RECIPROCITY design liège since 2012, all is made possible.
Look forward to meeting you there…
The Provincial Deputy in Charge of Culture, Liege
Chairman of the Provincial Centre for Arts and Crafts of Liege
(Office Provincial des Métiers d’Art de Liège - OPMA)

Design with a social impact; the participation of
designers and citizens in the process of public service innovation; teaching and learning as a cradle for a new ethical awareness in the role of a designer; and new models
of co-creation, production and micro-entrepreneurship,
together they form the subject of a common reflection
within the framework of an international event that acts
as a meeting point and working tool. Far from being a
simple showcase that makes a guest appearance every
three years, RECIPROCITY’s lifeblood is as a multidisciplinary laboratory that is ongoing - a collaborative and
lasting project. The second edition of the Triennial features exhibitions, film screenings, workshops, seminars
and debates. And for the first time, the programme encompasses architecture and graphic design, and a series
of extra-muros events that take place in other Belgian
and Euregio Meuse-Rhine cities.

The Meeting Point is a pulsing hub
for the event, acting as an info- and
press point, a space for partners and
sponsors, and a place to enjoy the local
food & drinks. The 2015 venue is a FabLab,
running its own activities dedicated
to ‘makers’ culture and presenting an
exhibition featuring lab methodologies
and social design in 3 containers on the
Place Saint-Etienne: module 1. 3D print
design, module 2. Experimentation lab:
Food Design, module 3. Slow design.
RECIPROCITY’s welcome point is
hosted in a forth container. In addition,
in the former RELab head-quarter,
the meeting point incorporates the
‘meeting room’, where RECIPROCITY
and its partner organisations host a
series of events focused on social
innovation, open source design and
DIY, in a setting furnished with Artek’s
Alvar Aalto collection.
01/10, 2:30-3PM:
Artek Manifest
Conference by Marianne Goebl,
managing director. The far-sighted
founders of the Finnish furniture

synthesis of the arts. When the
company was founded in 1935,
an Artek Manifest was drawn up,
inspired by functionalism. The
vision was to interconnect modern
visual arts, rational furniture
production and popular education.
These goals and values are still
very much part of Artek today.

OPENING &
AWARDS CEREMONY:
Thursday 1 October at 6pm
This exhibition is the result of an international call for entries addressed
to schools, students & designers (product design, graphic design, interior
architecture, service design and design for social innovation). From nearly 200
entrants, 58 products, projects and services were selected by a professional
committee, with four prizes (Wallonia, Wallonia-Brussels Federation, Euregio
Meuse-Rhine and International) awarded by an international jury. The awards
ceremony takes place in the exhibition venue on 1 October during the opening
event of RECIPROCITY design liège 2015. The Taste of Change encompasses
changes of habits, lifestyles, food consumption, conservation, production &
distribution, and bio- and cultural diversity. Through tools and ingredients we
use on a daily basis to feed ourselves, collectively it reveals how today’s design
questions and provides objects, services and systems which foster innovation.

Welcome to__ experiences the role design can play in engaging and
bringing about positive change in local communities. It is an encounter
with a series of new narratives woven for and with the inhabitants of the
neighbourhoods of Saint-Gilles in the city of Liege - continuing a mision
from RECIPROCITY 2012 - and of Trasenster in the town of Seraing.
Through objects, images, stories and schemes, the exhibition offers
a broad taste of the micro interventions carried out, which ranged
from empty shop windows as communication tools to peer-to-peer
food services. Visitors are invited to explore how designers, design
students, inhabitants and other local stakeholders worked together.
In addition, the Public Innovation Place (PIP) is an informal workplace
located within the Welcome to__ exhibition space. A live encounter for
inhabitants and local stakeholders, it features a series of simple tools to
support design activities aimed at social innovation for neighbourhoods
or society in general. One element is the indoor and outdoor workshops
animated by a select group of designers, and open to the public. Each
workshop focuses on a specific local context (e.g. Liege, Seraing...), theme
and design approach. WORKSHOPS

Founded in 2005, Rotor is a collective of people with a common interest
in the material flows in industry and construction. On a practical level, Rotor
handles the conception and realisation of design and architectural projects.
On a theoretical level, Rotor develops critical positions on design, material
resources and waste, through research, exhibitions, writings and conferences.
The project aims to shed light on the practices of building deconstruction
and the reuse of construction materials. Using a curatorial approach
that seeks to let the materials speak for themselves, Rotor approaches a
relatively unknown sector of economic activities by presenting alternative
practices, likely to yield new knowledge capable of reconfiguring the
customary flows (or the dead-ends...) of the material economy. Starting from
a thoroughly empirical observation of deconstruction and reuse practices,
it will launch a series of reflections: about how cost of labour and of
materials relate in Europe, about the complex relations between architects
and the building materials industry, or even more poetic questions such as
tastes and colours.

Realised in three parts (posters in town, workshops, exhibition), the
project emphasises graphic design and visual communication as a channel
of civic expression for social change, addressed from the perspective of
an intervention in public space and a collaborative act that also shares
tangible know-how. Invited guest designers will each run a workshop
open to students and the public, where the language of graphic design is
considered a dynamic tool in the city, and not as a pure technique.

Max Borka is the director of Mapping the Design World, a Berlinbased platform on social design. For RECIPROCITY he presents a two-day
series of screenings and debates, showing documentaries produced
by independent organisations from all over the world, and which record
temporary or permanent social innovation projects. With a programme
combining full-length feature films and shorts, screenings are accompanied
by on-stage interviews with the directors. Panel debates, such as the way
in which the thriving local film scene could collaborate with social design
initiatives, further the event’s desire to engender a wide-ranging and public
dialogue.

2015 marks the 80th anniversary of Artek, the Finnish
furniture company founded by
four young idealists, Alvar and
Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and
Nils-Gustav Hahl, in the context
of the still-young international
modernist movement.
A platform for modern art, industry, interior design and
propaganda, the company’s
self-described purpose was ‘to
sell furniture and to promote a
modern culture of living by exhibitions and other educational
means.’ Eighty years after its creation, and in the radical spirit of its founders, Artek is investing in material research, in the development of systems
and standards, and in sustainable design.

It was founded in October 2011 under the leadership of the University of Liege.
At RECIPROCITY questions are posed about the requirements of salvaged
materials that would make them as easy to integrate in new building as their
new equivalents, with Maarten Gielen looking at the state of the sector and
exploring the potential of future developments.

A reflection on the conservation and enhancement of tangible and intangible heritage. Designed to stimulate a discussion
on new models of production,
responsible innovation and sustainable development, it looks at
the role we can play, whether as
citizen, designer or student, in our
environment. Following a workshop organised over a six-month
period, the exhibition Make It

the evolution of design manufacturing tools and technologies, and
their impact on both our personal

cast iron trade catalogues. The exhibition invites visitors to discover former objects of desire as depicted in 19th-century trade literature. Focusing on the European dimension of the Industrial Revolution, international exchanges and commonalities are addressed.
In the library, photographer Kim Bouvy presents Made in Europe: the
outcome of a visual research commissioned by Bureau Europa into the
specific reciprocity between the (post)industrial identities of Liege and

The aim of Dear Euregio is to
trace habits, spatial routines and
experiences of the inhabitants of
this cross-border region, in order
to discover how they are related to
a certain place.
These experiences will be translated into mappings, but also into
spatial action and interventions.
The project is executed from two
converted shipping containers,
one for the team of Dear Hunter and one furnished as a small
hotel room, fully equipped to receive guests and collaborators.
A series of designers from different backgrounds join in ‘dates’.
Through working sessions and
discussions they share (knowledge about) their projects and
strengthen cross-border encounters. The meetings are captured in
a ‘road movie’ to be permanently
broadcasted both at the Meeting
Point in Liege and Maastricht.
