Edmond n’est pas comme les autres. Petit homme discret, marié à une femme
attentionnée et employé efficace, il n’en ressent pas moins pleinement sa
différence. Lorsque des collègues, par moquerie, l’affublent d’un bonnet d’âne,
il a soudainement la révélation de sa vraie nature... et s’il semble s’épanouir
dans sa nouvelle identité, celle-ci creuse toutefois entre lui et les autres un
fossé d’incompréhension, qui va s’élargissant jusqu’à devenir infranchissable.
Edmond is not like everybody else. A small, quiet man, Edmond has a wife who
loves him and a job that he does extraordinarily well. He is, however, very aware
that he is different. When his co-workers tease him by crowning him with a pair
of donkey ears, he suddenly discovers his true nature. And though he comes
to enjoy his new identity, an ever-widening chasm opens up between himself
and others.
Avec délicatesse, le scénariste et cinéaste d’animation Franck Dion raconte
l’histoire émouvante de ce personnage attachant et aborde la difficulté d’être
soi-même face au conformisme social. Individu marginal, Edmond est comme
un âne dans un monde de chevaux, sa singularité faisant de lui un objet
d’attention qui suscite tantôt la curiosité et l’amusement, tantôt la gêne et
l’inconfort. Incapable de se résoudre à se mouler dans le rôle que son
entourage lui assigne, Edmond n’entrevoit qu’une seule perspective.
Screenwriter and director Franck Dion’s empathetic portrait of this sweetnatured individual illustrates the challenges of being true to oneself in a world
filled with social conformists. Edmond just doesn’t fit in: he’s a donkey in a
world of horses. People stare at him because of his strangeness, and are
alternately curious, amused, embarrassed and uncomfortable. Since he can’t
bring himself to be what others expect, Edmond makes the only possible
choice.

ABOUT THE FILMMAKER
Né à Versailles en 1970, Franck Dion est tour à tour
acteur, décorateur pour le théâtre et illustrateur. En
1999, il met en ligne la première version de son site
Internet, Les voyages imaginaires de Franck Dion
<www.franckdion.net>, qui reçoit en 2001 le Net d’or du
meilleur site artistique. En 2003, il réalise un premier
court métrage d’animation, L’inventaire fantôme, primé à
Annecy et en nomination au Cartoon d’or. En 2006, avec
quelques amis, il fonde la société de production Papy3D, au sein de laquelle
il réalise son deuxième film, Monsieur Cok (2008), sélectionné au Sundance
Film Festival et primé dans plusieurs festivals. Son troisième court métrage,
Edmond était un âne (2012), marque la première collaboration de l’Office
national du film du Canada avec Papy3D.
Franck Dion was born in Versailles in 1970 and has worked as an actor,
theatre set designer and illustrator. In 1999, he launched the first version of his
website, Les Voyages imaginaires de Franck Dion (franckdion.net), which was
awarded the Golden Net prize for best artistic website in 2001. In 2003, he
made his first short animated film, L'Inventaire fantôme, which won the Youth
Jury Award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, and was
nominated for the Cartoon d’Or. In 2006, together with a few friends, he
founded Papy3D, the company that produced his second film, Monsieur Cok
(2008), selected for the Sundance Film Festival, and the winner of several
awards. His third short film, Edmond Was a Donkey (2012), is the first film
that Papy3D has co-produced with the National Film Board of Canada.
