lumicosmes
kinetic light installations
by atsara
These kinetic light installations associate curving metallic structures to a light system,
giving birth to “lumicosmes”: kinetic sculptures whose constitutive material is light.
Sparks of light appear out of darkness, fly in the air and vanish, creating a mysterious
calligraphy, a gestural tableau in perpetual movement.
Minimal or complex, these « fireflies » have a magical presence, a hypnotic power.
They fill the space and seem to reveal the energy that circulates within it.

Their continuous metamorphosis, both cyclic and unpredictible, evoques the dance at
random of sparkling insects, the movement of particles, fluid life flowing in the veins of an
invisible being, a trip into the different dimensions of matter, from the infinitely large to the
infinitely small.
They bring everyone to the doors of one’s own imagination.
A sonic surround can complete the kinetic light installations, according to the context of the
exhibition.
Sounds expand, suspended in silence, then fade away.
These acousmatic compositions are based upon a dialogue with coincidence: cycles of
sound succeed, overlap, creating variable associations within a continuous pulsation.
Sonic and visual kinetics enter into resonance and form a coherent aesthetic universe.

Technical Plan
Exhibition space
- Relatively dark exhibition place (from half-light to complete darkness):
either a dark room or outdoor space at night.
- Minimum space : about 5 meters by 6 meters ; about 2,20 meters height.
(depending on the installations – please contact us)
- Hanging points that can support a charge of 1 to 5 kg
(on the ceiling or on existing supports outdoor, such as trees...).
If it is not possible to hang anything this way, we have also an autonomous set with light
stands.
- Electricity needed (220 V)
Technical characteristics of the works
The installationsa are constituted of pre-existing metallic structure or of structures specially
made in situ. It is composed of one or several structures.
Average size of a metallic structure: 120cm/120cm/120cm
Weight: from 500 g to 5 kg.
Material : iron
Time
Set : 1 to 2 days (variable according to the projects, please contact us)
Breakdown : 2 hours.

atsara
atsara is a duo composed of Roland Devocelle and Audrey Rocher, working in the field of
plastic arts, sound arts and corporeal art.
Our first creation in 2000 was the beginning of our common work with sounds and gestures,
and of our interest in the relations between sound arts and other artistic expressions.
As one of us initially comes from a musical formation, and the other one from drama and
clown art, our collaboration is enriched by these differing approaches to performing arts,
sound art, dramaturgy, relation with the audience, and improvisation. Our research in the
field of plastic arts is likewise nourished by this background.
From 2002 to 2008, we have made several artistic collaborations in France and abroad
based on musical and mulitdisciplinary improvisation with musicians, painter, clown, dancers,
puppet and shadow-theater artists, writer…. We practiced and researched in the visual arts,
through photography, video art, visual performances and recently, in 2008, with creating
kinetic light installations, ”Lumicosmes”.
Roland Devocelle is born in 1969 à Valence (F- 26).
Education Ceramist diploma.
Self-taught education in music (jazz and improvised music), sonic arts
(improvisations and acousmatic et electro-acoustic compositions) and
plastic arts (photo, video, installations).
Audrey Rocher is born in 1977 in Agen (F- 47).
Education Political Sciences Diploma.
Self-taught education in clown art (Bulo - www.bulo.fr), corporeal arts,
sonic arts (instrumental and acousmatic improvisations) and plastic arts
(photo, video, installations).
Common profesionnal practice in the frame of multidisciplinary projects
since 2000.
After several years of nomadic way of life, we settled in the South West
of France, where we live and work since 2008.

Artistic step
Transdisciplinary work
Our work situates itself at the crossraods of several artistic disciplines: sound art, visual art
and corporeal art. From one artistic discipline into another, our work expands, combines,
provokes, inspires, enters into resonance. Sound art and visual art become indivisible.
This transdisciplinarity is for us a special key, linked to our respective backgrounds, which
brings us to imagine polymorphic works, intimate works, stilmulating differents senses.
Simplicity and birth of the imaginary
Our creations, whether auditory or visual, find their expression in simple technologies.
The materials employed are in themselves simple, raw materials. And so they are equally
close to us all, perceived and understood directly without intermediaries. Common, almost
banale, they take another dimension by the modification of the viewer’s sight-line or the
quality of listening.
In this new approach the imagination expands—ours, in the role of creators, and that of the
viewer as well. In fact, we wish to conceive open works that invite the spectator to activate
his own imagination, leaving the field open for the poetic vision of every person.

Dialogue with chance
From the conception, we enter into a dialogue with Matter,
be it sonore, visual, or coproreal. We establish an exchange
between what the matter suggests to us spantaneously and
what we choose to recreate, what we discover freely inside
the moment and the orientation we wish to formalise. An
equilibrium insues, between the artistic will and the
aleatory happening, between our propositions and those of
chance.
This process creates works that reflect who we are and
drives us as well us to unimagined territories. Chance
extends its hand and invites us to discover where we would
not have gone consciously: an elsewhere, a bit further, within
us and around us.
From this spirit of improvisation during the creative process or
during the performance itself, are born moving works,
permeable presences, having a cyclical character, continually
renewed.
