Winter Hanging Basket Workshop
URBAN COMMUNITY WINTER HANGING BASKET WORKSHOPS INVOLVING THE COMMUNITY – NORTH SUMMERFIELD RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION AND THE BLACK ENVIRONMENT NETWORK LADYWOOD, BIRMINGHAM Working in partnership with North Summerfield Residents Association and the Black Environment Network, Quadron were delighted to support local residents by helping to run two winter hanging basket workshops. Working together with With British Summer Time drawing to a close Quadron’s Horticultural Development Manager, Nicola Clarke, was delighted to join forces with Chris Blythe from the North Summerfield Residents Association and Tahaira Aly from the Black Environment Network (BEN) to help to run two winter hanging basket workshops. The workshops were held at the Coplow Street GEML grow site and The Ark on Cavendish Road in Ladywood, Birmingham. Plants and materials were funded by BEN in order to encourage as many local residents as possible to participate. As BEN are committed to encouraging communities to grow their own food, participants could choose to make an edible basket using various herbs such as Rosemary, Sage, Chives, Mint or a traditional winter flowering basket with Polyanthus and Pansies. Everyone, particularly the young children, had great fun and were thrilled with the end results. Thanks to everyone the local area will now have plenty of colour and additional seasonal interest over the coming winter months. “It is great to see members of the local community taking such an interest and growing their own food in baskets and planters and then sharing their experiences and knowledge with others. ” Tahaira Aly, BEN
