Located in the Côte de Nuits, 2 km south of Nuits Saint Georges, the Domaine de l'Arlot took
its name from the "Clos de l'Arlot", a 10 acres vineyard around the house.
HISTORY OF THE DOMAINE DE L'ARLOT
L'Arlot is a small river that runs through the village of Premeaux and underground the Clos de
l'Arlot.
At the end of the 18th century Jean Charles Vienot, belonging to a very well-known upper
middle-class family of Burgundy and owner of the house and vineyard, built a wall around to
create the "Clos de l'Arlot". Taking his inspiration from Italian baroque gardens, his son
François then had a very strange and surprising park built in the centre of Clos de l'Arlot, on
what used to be a marble quarry.
In 1891 the Clos de l'Arlot was sold to Jules Belin – wine négociant and son of a notary from
Burgundy - who added to it the "Clos des Forêts Saint Georges" and the "Clos du Chapeau".
Numerous artists came to Premeaux, invited by Jules Belin, to make from the stones strange
sculpture of animal faces. The estate known as "Maison Jules Belin" was then run by
members of Jules Belin's family until 1987 when they decided to sell it.
OWNERSHIP AND OPERATORSHIP
The French insurance group AXA bought the estate in 1987 and is the sole owner of the
vineyard (33 acres) and the premises. At the same time, "Domaine de l'Arlot" was created as a
development company, that rents vineyard and premises.
The property was run by Jean-Pierre De Smet and Lise Judet, until 2006. As from January
2007, Christian Seely has taken over as Managing Director and Olivier Leriche as Technical
Director.
THE VINEYARD
The vineyards (covering 14 hectares, approximately 35 acres today) are mainly situated
around Nuits Saint Georges but also in Vosne Romanée. There are many old vines (some 50
years old or more) with an average age of 30.
Since its creation in 1987, the Domaine de l'Arlot has moved away from what might be called
the "classic" method of vineyard management to a biological one : ploughing rather than
herbicide, no insecticide or any other harmful products…Today the vineyard management is
mainly biological with an organic approach.
The yields are kept very low on purpose via severe pruning and via the use of natural compost
exclusively and in low quantities. The average crop since 1987 is 35 hl/ha.

As the Clos de l’Arlot blanc, the Nuits Saint Georges blanc, with a touch of pineapple,

NUITS SAINT GEORGES 1 ER CRU ROUGE
CUVEE LES PETITS PLETS

The Nuits Saint Georges 1er cru is the cuvée of the young vines of Clos des Forêts St Georges,
planted between 1986 and 1989.
From the 1990 vintage and till the 1998 vintage, this cuvée was labelled Nuits Saint
Georges.(except for the 1993 vintage, a Nuits St Georges 1er cru was produced, coming from
the vines plated in 1982 and 1986).
Since the 1999 vintage, the vines being less young and the better quality of the wine
produced, we decided to label this cuvée Nuits Saint Georges 1er cru.
Grape variety :
Pinot noir
Productions methods :
Vine-growing :
- average age of the vines : 23 years

More structured with good and fine tannins, the Nuits Saint Georges 1er cru displays the breed
of its origin. The tannins are a little bit harder and less ripe than the Clos des Forêts St
Georges 1er Cru and the length on the palate less persistent, but it has the same berry fruit and
liquorice aromas. It is a wine for ageing, very typical of the Nuits Saint Georges terroir.

The 2009 Cote de Nuits Villages Clos du Chapeau, from vines in Comblanchien, wafts from the
glass with pretty suggestions of high-toned flowers, herbs, berries and spices, all of which come
together in an accessible, feminine style best suited for near-term enjoyment. Anticipated

2009
Domaine de l'Arlot Nuits St Georges Clos de l'Arlot
(91-93)
Young
The 2009 Nuits St. Georges Clos de l’Arlot, emerges from vines that are 60 years old. This is all
class and elegance. A precise, beautifully delineated bouquet leads to layers of red berries,
crushed flowers and sweet spices, all of which meld together with notable harmony. Silky tannins
frame the exquisite, understated finish. Leriche used 60-70% whole clusters here. Anticipated
maturity: 2019-2029.
2009
Domaine de l'Arlot Nuits St Georges Clos des Forets St Georges
(92-94)
Young
The 2009 Nuits St. Georges Clos des Forets Saint Georges is a huge, brooding wine. Smoke, tar,
incense and wild cherries are some of the nuances that emerge from this muscular, intense
Burgundy. The fruit builds with notable drive towards the unstoppable finish. This will require
considerable patience, but it is strikingly beautiful. Leriche used 95% whole clusters here. I tasted
a blend from five different barrels, each consisting of fruit from vineyards of different ages.
Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034.
2009
Domaine de l'Arlot Nuits St Georges le Petit Arlot
88+
Young
The 2009 Nuits St. Georges Cuvee le Petit Arlot is a beautiful entry-level wine. The perfumed
bouquet adds complexity to a solid core of vibrant fruit. The Petit Arlot is made from young vines
that are under ten years old. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2021.
2009
Domaine de l'Arlot Nuits St Georges les Petits Plets
(88-89)
Young
The 2009 Nuits St. Georges Cuvee Les Petit Plets shows wonderful generosity in its open,
radiant dark fruit. The wine turns pointed and focused on the finish, where hints of tar, smoke and
licorice add complexity. This is a gorgeous wine all-around. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.
2009
Domaine de l'Arlot Romanee St Vivant
(94-96)
Young
The 2009 Romanee St. Vivant is a showstopper. Dark, powerful and inward, the wine gradually
emerges from its shell to reveal a gorgeous core of fruit. This is an especially opulent, intense St.
Vivant built on fruit more than aromatics. It will require considerable patience, but is shaping up to
be a jewel. Leriche used 100% whole clusters here. Anticipated maturity: 2024-2044.
2009
Domaine de l'Arlot Vosne Romanee les Suchots
(93-95)
Young
The 2009 Vosne-Romanee Les Suchots is all class and elegance from start to finish. Sweet, silky
tannins frame layers of dark fruit as this sensual, dazzling wine opens up in the glass. There is
remarkable nuance and clarity in the fruit, while the aromatics lace all of the elements together.
This captivating, harmonious wine is totally irresistible. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.

Maturity
Early
The l’Arlot 2008 Cote De Nuits Villages Clos Du Chapeau offers bright blackberry and cherry
tinged by the bitterness of pits and with high-toned evocations of almond extract and herbal
distillates. Surprisingly creamy in texture yet at the same time vintage-typically bright, it finishes
with levity and lip-smacking savor. This ought to be lovely over at least the next 6-8 years. 2010 2018.
2008
Domaine de l'Arlot Nuits St Georges Clos de l'Arlot
92
Young
The 2008 Nuits St. Georges Clos de L’Arlot possesses striking perfume, well-articulated fruit and
tons of class. This is a very typical 2008 in its graceful personality and medium body. The wine
needs a few years for the tannins to soften, but all of the ingredients are present for this to be a
highly rewarding bottle in a few years’ time. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028.
2008
Domaine de l'Arlot Nuits St Georges Clos des Forets St Georges
92
Young
The 2008 Nuits St. Georges Clos des Forets St.-Georges is a gorgeous wine. Here the freshness
of the vintage plays off the warmth of the site nicely. The 2008 is naturally less extroverted than
the 2009 tasted alongside it, but the wine nevertheless impresses for its cool, mineral-laced fruit
and fabulous length. This is a fairly subtle wine that isn’t quite ready to show all of its cards.
Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028.
2008
Domaine de l'Arlot Nuits St Georges le Petit Arlot
(87-88)
Early
Blueberry and bitter huckleberry, blond tobacco and brown spices scent as well as mark the juicy,
vivacious plate of the 2008 Nuits-St.-Georges Le Petit Arlot (second wine of the Clos de l’Arlot).
This is surprisingly refined on the mid-palate, and although huckleberry and black tea bitterness
compound a slight sense of gum-numbing in the finish, primary fruit juiciness and attractive spice
still carry the day. I would be cautious however about cellaring this, as it may well be best enjoyed
within the next 4-6 years. . 2010 - 2016.
2008
Domaine de l'Arlot Nuits St Georges les Petits Plets
(86-87)
L’Arlot’s 2008 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Petits Plets (second wine of their Forets St.-Georges) leads
with pungent aromatic intensity of holly berry, cedar, juniper berry, and huckleberry. The palate
impression is as pungent and piquant as those aromas led me to anticipate, and is accompanied
by considerable gum-numbing astringency. As with the corresponding Petit Arlot, there is sap and
primary juiciness as well as some alluring spice in the finish, but it’s harder in this instance for
them to break free of the tannins. I would plan tentatively on drinking this within the next 4-6
years; but perhaps the tannins will resolve themselves and the wine eventually prove itself more
appealing, knitted, and longer-lived. Anticipated maturity: NA.
2008
Domaine de l'Arlot Romanee St Vivant
93
Young
The 2008 Romanee St. Vivant shows the essence of crushed flowers, dark cherries, spices and
licorice with a crystalline purity that is admirable. The tannins are refined and beautifully
integrated. This should be fabulous in another few years. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033.
2008
Domaine de l'Arlot Vosne Romanee les Suchots
93
Young
The 2008 Vosne-Romanee Les Suchots is subtle, perfumed and delicate. It is a pretty,
understated wine, but here I prefer the 2009 for its greater density and richness, which should
provide a wider and longer drinking window of enjoyment. Sweet spices, flowers and licorice
linger on the fleeting finish. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2026.
