About EQUIP AUTO 2011
The international show for all automotive suppliers, EQUIP AUTO has become a major hub for manufacturers, dealers and
repairers seeking new products, services and partners. It is organised by Comexposium with its shareholder partners: the
French Automotive Equipment Industries Association (FIEV) and the French Industrial Body-building Federation (FFC). In
2011, the show expects some 96,000 visitors (including 30% from other countries) and 1,800 exhibitors in all sectors (75%
from other countries).

AN EVER SHARPER CUTTINg-EDgE
IN DIAgNOSTICS!
Electronic complexity and the arrival of hybrid and electric vehicles are
making matters ever more complicated for repair workshops. This is
why the manufacturers of DIAGNOSTICS tools are striving to provide
assistance with appropriate software and terminals. Touch tablets are
stealing the thunder in workshops.
the arrival of diagNoStiCS tools in fast-track repair centres such as Speedy
and other fast fitters is no mere communication gimmick. it is actually a necessity,
given that on some models, mechanics first have to disable the electric parking
brake system even for simple procedures such as replacing brake pads. the same
goes for bodybuilders: before handing the vehicle over to the customer, they now
have to make sure they have not neutralised any sensors while working on a wing.
“demand is ever-changing, as is technical complexity,” explains François Hostalier at
Delphi. “Maintenance increasingly involves resetting logic controllers and recoding
fuel injectors, egr* valves or particulate filters. and, with increasing numbers of logic
controllers, given the development of driving aid systems using radars and cameras,
tools in turn are becoming increasingly sophisticated.”

TOOLS INTEgRATINg TECHNICAL DATA FROM VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS
luckily, software publishers – who also
manufacture their own diagNoStiCS tools for
market leaders – have the necessary technical
expertise at their fingertips. involving players
such as Bosch and Delphi for example, as
oeMs, smooths technology transfer in the
aftermarket sector, even if this means purchasing
technical data from vehicle manufacturers and
reverse engineering to grasp how the electronic
components work. this is how they manage to
offer multi-brand diagNoStiCS tools, capable
of reading default codes. Moreover, information
is processed for increasingly intuitive insight. the
tools automatically open pages, according to
the components to be diagnosed, and indicate
the procedure to be followed, as in it support.
a walk-through mode giving mechanics stepby-step guidance.

its centre in blois. “Machinery is going to have to
change to factor in these new batteries and their
encoding,” reckons François Hostalier. Bosch
has also factored the new setup in with the FSa
050, to test hybrid and electric vehicles, a device
that’s simply brimming with technology (voltage,
resistance and capacity).
* In partnership with Vivid, Multi-Diag VL will also be offering
an automatic link to a procedure to search for breakdown
with VESA guidance, for each default code detected on a
logic controller.

it remains a highly mechanics-oriented business.
there are indeed an increasing number of
electronic components in common rail engines,
with piezoelectric injectors for example, and euro
5 does require in-depth expert knowledge (Actia
has just developed an offer* in this field), but
thermal technology does still prevail in workshops.
However, changes will be introduced with the
gradual increase in hybrid and electric vehicles.
it will obviously impact the business, since there
are procedures to be complied with for example,
to disconnect batteries. Certification will be
necessary to work on high-voltage vehicles (up to
400 volts). Delphi has already initiated training in
Actia and the “green” repair workshop
“We are clearly at a crossroads with the arrival of
the first “all-electric” cars, which have different
architecture and require a new approach,”
Laurent Guerci, Director of Multi-brand
DIAGNOSTICS at Actia points out. This is why
we have launched a new “green” business,
including anti-pollution DIAGNOSTICS, Stop
& Start systems that automatically cut the
engine and hybrid and electric vehicles.” This
choice was also motivated by the presence
on board of special logic controllers for electric
vehicles. Actia has first-hand knowledge
of this, since it supplied the electric traction
chain for Bolloré’s Blue Car. The cars
made for Autolib’, the self-service scheme
in Paris will be propelled by components
produced and assembled in Colomiers,
outside Toulouse. This will be a showcase
for Actia, which is already in pole position to
diagnose electric vehicles with DIAGNOSTICS
tools for Peugeot and Citroën models.
Diagnosing noise
With electric vehicles, another new feature is
taking shape: listening to noise. “Mechanics
are asked to listen out for and locate noises on
board vehicles,” indicated Jean-Pierre Marlier
at One Too. “We are going to have to draft
databases starting with bearings, the water
pump and other equipment, to pinpoint the
specific noises each vehicle makes. There’s
no doubt about it, DIAGNOSTICS won’t be
stopping there.
Tablets make a breakthrough
at Panasonic. Data can be entered on
the touch-screen using fingers or a stylus,
even with gloves. But sturdiness is its
overriding asset. “With this kind of product,
the return rate stands at a mere 0.5%,
as opposed to 10% for less heavy-duty
computers,” he continued. The product is
guaranteed for three years, with a 5-year
guarantee extension and related services.
Delphi has a netbook, i.e. a laptop with
a rotating screen like a rugged tablet
to switch from portrait to landscape
mode, plus an integrated accelerometer.
While rugged tablets are consolidating their
position in workshops, an iPad equivalent is
making inroads in workshop reception areas.
This is an Actia initiative, spurred by its drive
to improve reception, with software that can
scan the vehicle, take photos of the bodywork
and plan work based on technical data,
instead of notes scrawled on a slip of paper.

Is it the iPad knock-on effect? Whatever,
DIAGNOSTICS is increasingly carried out using
touch tablets. Of course, these products don’t
necessarily have much in common with Apple’s
star product. They are rugged tablets, designed
for use in rough, tough environments, but with
powerful calculation skills (using Intel Core chips)
and ergonomic to boot. Actia for example,
offers the IP54 from the new XG range, a tablet
that runs with Windows 7, boasting a 13.3 inch
colour touch-screen, 4 Gb RAM, a 250 Gb
hard drive, integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, an
OBD interface and Full Euro V. It can run alone
for eight hours, i.e. for a normal working day.
In this field, Panasonic is enjoying huge
success with its Toughbook. With a footing in
the automotive DIAGNOSTICS market since
2006, first at Renault-Nissan, before spreading
to other brands, the Japanese manufacturer
has designed rugged tablets for brands such
as Ford, Fiat and Toyota. In the past six years,
it has shipped 150,000
products to 20 vehicle
manufacturers. With its
13.3 inch HD screen,
the latest model can
be used by technicians
to
run
DIAGNOSTICS
programmes in real time
and view telematics data.
Viewing schemas and
plans is child’s play. “The
screen
was
specially
developed to be as clear
as possible, whether in the
workshop or outdoors in
bright sunshine,” explains
Christophe Bouchaudon,
Key Account Manager

AMÉDÉE, A gORDINI FOR IN-CYLINDER PRESSURE
MEASUREMENT SOLUTIONS
where diagNoStiCS seamlessly integrates
mechanical checks, which hitherto has not
been possible,” states Jean-pierre Marlier at
One Too. “engines with poor compression can
impact emissions, ignition and carburetion”. in
concrete terms, the device measures pressure
during cycles and indicates the number of
pressure thresholds, as well as engine rotation
speed with the starter. Cylinder tightness is
rated according to an amédée index (rating 0 to
100), in reference
to the name of the
appliance. One Too
clearly aims to set
a new standard.
“renault and pSa
are interested in
this tool,” indicates
Jean-pierre Marlier.
“it could also come
in really handy
for second-hand
dealers”.

One Too has developed a multi-purpose
appliance to check cylinder heads for petrol and
diesel engines. it has been called amédée, after
gordini’s first name. why this allusion? Quite
simply because the product was developed
with renault. One Too has even applied
two white stripes, a distinctive sign featured
nowadays on the bodywork of special series.
“with this device, which measures compression
and helps detect leaks, we are entering a phase
