S: Hi there, just popped in to see if you need anything. I’m just on my way to the
supermarket.
P: That’s very kind, but I’m fine thanks and anyway I’m on my way to the village for
the local fruit and veg market. They do have some beautiful stuff, but it’s best not
to leave it too late.
S: Oh, everyone says it looks wonderful, but I just don’t have the vocabulary or the
confidence to ask for things. I find it so much easier to pick things up, put them in a
bag and press the picture button on the weighing machine.
P: Well I could help you with a few words and phrases if you like.
S: Would you ? Ah that would be great. For example apples and potatoes seem to
have the same name.
P: Yes apples are ‘pommes’ and potatoes are ‘pommes de terre,’ earth apples or you
might hear the word patates, spuds.
S: Oh, I see and another one I think is cabbage and cauliflower, they’re really
similar.
P: Indeed cabbage is chou and cauliflower chou-fleur – cabbage flower.
S: Now how do I tell them how much or how many I need?
P: Well some things are sold by weight in kilos and some are sold by the piece, ‘par
pièce.’ Like the cabbage for example. Oh and remember anything under a kilo is in
grammes.
S: So if I want 3 kilos of potatoes and a cabbage?
P: You just say ‘trois kilos pommes de terre et un chou s’il vous plaît.’
S : ‘Trois kilos pommes de terre et un chou s’il vous plaît.’ Now I need some carrots
and leeks.
P : Well, carrots are des carottes and leeks are des poireaux.
S: Oh, I’ll remember that, des carottes et des poireaux, like Hercule Poirot.
P :That’s it.
S: Now if I want some more of something, how do I say that?
P: Just say ‘plus s’il vous plaît.’
S : ‘Plus s’il vous plaît.’ Right, well... can I come to the market with you?

S: Fantastic.
J: Bonjour monsieur.
P: Bonjour. Vos pommes sont à combien ?
J : Deux euros un kilo.
P : Je voudrais trois kilos des pommes s’il vous plaît et trois citrons.
J : Oui, voulez-vous autre chose ?
P : Non merci c’est tout.
J : Sept cinquante s’il vous plaît.
P : Tenez, il y a l’appoint.
J : Merci, au revoir, bon journée.
P : Vous aussi.

J : Et pour le monsieur, qu’est-ce que ce sera ?
P : Attendez, je regarde ma liste. Je voudrais un chou-fleur, s’il vous plaît.
J :Celui-ci, ça irait ?
P : Non, je voudrais celui-là.
J : Voilà, et avec ça ?
P : Je voudrais aussi quatre kilos des pommes de terre et deux kilo des carottes.
J : Quatre kilos des patates et deux kilos des carottes. Voilà. Et avec ceci ?
P : Avez-vous des poireaux ?
J : Oui, là-bas, à gauche.
P : C’est combien la botte? J’en prends deux comme ça.
J : Deux bottes de poireaux. C’est tous?
P : Oui c’est tous merci.
J : Alors, quinze soixante dix s’il vous plaît.
