"MFL Pimary: Nine French Lesson Starters" Script 1 EXT. PRIMARY SCHOOL PLAYGROUND - DAY QCA Unit 2 - Jeux et Chansons [Playground Games] - Year 3 A LARGE GROUP OF CHILDREN play in the playground. A SMALLER GROUP OF CHILDREN stand in formation and sing ‘Frère Jacques’. At the front an ENTHUSIASTIC CHILD conducts them. At the back of the formation four children, THEA, NIELS, CAMILLE B, CORENTIN W, look bored. THEA puts her hand in her pocket and takes out a large piece of chalk. She signals to her three friends to move to the other side of the playground. The four children slink away from the singing group. The other children nod excitedly and NIELS points at the ground. CAMILLE B grabs the chalk from THEA, goes into a squatting position and begins to draw out the game map. THEA looks sulky and folds her arms over her chest. As CAMILLE B draws the numbers on the ground NIELS and CORENTIN W chant the numbers out loud. Un! One! Deux! Two! Trois! Three! Quatre! Four! Cinq! Five! NIELS CORENTIN W NIELS CORENTIN W NIELS When CAMILLE reaches the number five she draws a five backwards. NIELS shouts out. NIELS (CONT’D) Non, cinq….comme ça! No, it's five - like that! 1 2. THEA grabs the chalk off CAMILLE B and draws the number five correctly. As she draws she shouts out the final numbers. THEA Cinq, six, sept, huit! Comme ça! Five, six, seven, eight! Like that! The children start to play the game. THEA goes first and skillfully navigates up and down the numbers. When she gets back she turns to CAMILLE B. à toi. Your turn. à moi. My turn. THEA (CONT’D) CAMILLE B CUT TO: Niels steps away from the group. Niels turns to camera with the remaining children playing hopscotch in the background. NIELS Pouvez-vous écrire de un à dix en français? Can you write one to ten in French? 2 EXT. PRIMARY SCHOOL PLAYGROUND - DAY Four children, THEO, CAMILLE H, ENZO, SACHA are standing in the playground chanting a 'choosing rhyme'. They take it in turn as they stand in a circle pointing at each child. (This is intercut with rising numbers geese footage.) THEO Une oie, deux oies, trois oies, quatre oies, cinq oies, six oies... One goose, two geese, three geese, four geese, five geese, six geese... Slight pause as his finger hovers over Sacha. THEO (CONT’D) ... c'est toi! ... you’re it! 2 3. CAMILLE H Jouons à ‘un deux trois soleil’! Let’s play ‘one, two, three sun’! All the children laugh and spread into a new formation. Enzo goes to one side of the playground. Sacha turns away from the children, puts her hands over her eyes and starts to count. SACHA Un, deux, trois... She turns round and all the others freeze. SACHA (CONT’D) ... soleil! SACHA eyes them all sharply looking for any sign of movement. They remain completely still. SACHA turns around again. SACHA (CONT’D) Un, deux, trois... soleil! She spins round quickly. THEO is running too fast and cannot stop. Theo! SACHA (CONT’D) THEO lets out a big huff of disappointment and sits down, out of the game. SACHA turns around and counts again. SACHA (CONT’D) Un, deux, trois... soleil! She waits slightly before turning around. CAMILLE H is balancing on one leg. She loses her balance and falls over. Camille! SACHA (CONT’D) CAMILLE H sits down laughing. ENZO, who is quite close now, stifles a giggle. SACHA eyes ENZO suspiciously. SACHA turns around again. SACHA (CONT’D) Un, deux, trois... 4. ENZO runs up and taps SACHA on the shoulder before she can say ‘soleil’. CUT TO: Camille H is sitting in down where left the game. She turns to camera. CAMILLE H Pouvez-vous chanter une chanson française? Can you sing a French song? 3 EXT. GREEN FIELD, NEXT TO PLAYGROUND - DAY 3 A group of children stand in a field. COACH (40), wearing awkward sporting gear, is blowing a whistle that hangs round his neck. Coach is doing star jumps and clapping his hands in the air. The children look bored. They ignore Coach’s efforts to get their attention and huddle together in a circle arms over shoulders. MARINE Tu préfères la corde à sauter ou le foot? Do you want to do skipping or play football? CORENTIN Moi, je préfère le foot. I'd like to play football MARGOT Ah, non - je déteste le foot! On no - I hate football! IVANA Ah oui, moi aussi. Yes, me too. MARGOT and JUSTINE separate from the huddle. They pick up the skipping ropes. MARGOT On joue à la corde à sauter… We'll do skipping… MARGOT and IVANA start skipping and counting out loud. IVANA/MARGOT Un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit. Neuf, dix CUT TO: 5. Coach has successfully organised the remaining children. They each have numbers on their shirts. Two captains are selected by Coach. Yoann is given a GREEN ARM BAND and Kevin BLUE ARM BAND. Each captain selects their team members in random order. YOANN Le cinq, le dix, le six, le trois... Five, ten, six, three... KEVIN Le sept, le huit, le six, le huit And seven, eight, six, eight... On y va! Come on! YOANN Kevin’s team score a goal. It’s a goal kick. The COACH places the ball on the goal line for YOANN to kick off. Kevin runs to the ball and dribbles it away. The COACH blows his whistle repeatedly but KEVIN ignores him and shoots it illegally into the net. Yoann’s team protest and crowd around the COACH. COACH runs to the other side of the pitch and places the ball on the penalty line. He signals and blows his whistle. CUT TO: MARGOT and JUSTINE hear the commotion, drop their skipping ropes and run to the edge of the football pitch. Justine jumps up and down. IVANA Allez les bleus! Come on you blues! Margot glares at Ivana and shouts. MARGOT Allez les verts! Come on you greens! Yoann and the GOAL KEEPER stare each other out. The whistle blows. Yoann takes a run up and kicks the ball hard. 6. The GOAL KEEPER dives the other way and the ball flies into the back of the net. Coach indicates to his watch and blows the final whistle. Yoann’s team cheer, pick him up and run off the pitch. Margot goes running after them. Ivana crosses her arms. IVANA Je n'aime pas le football! I don’t like football! Ivana turns to camera. IVANA (CONT’D) Qu'est-ce que tu préfères... le foot ou la corde à sauter? What do you like best... football or skipping? 4 INT. NICOLAS BEDROOM - DAY QCA UNIT 7 - On ya va (Let’s Go) - Year 4 4 NICOLAS is looking at his swimming trunks before going to the computer. Reading out loud as he types. NICOLAS Jeudi, je vais à la piscine. Tu viens avec moi? On Thursday I'm going to the swimming pool. Are you coming with me? CUT TO: 5 INT. INES BEDROOM - DAY 5 INES is reading a book on the bed. SOUND FX: EMAIL ALERT INES jumps out of bed and reads the email on the computer. INES Jeudi, je vais à la piscine avec Nicolas. On Thursday I'm going swimming with Nicolas. INES leaves the room. 7. 6 INT. INES LIVING ROOM - DAY 6 INES hurries into the room where her MOTHER is reading the newspaper. INES Quel temps fait-il, jeudi? What's the weather like on Thursday? Mother leafs through the newspaper. MOTHER ... eeuh... jeudi... il fait beau mais froid! Pourquoi? Ummm….Thursday - it's nice but cold! Why? INES Je vais à la piscine avec Nicolas. I'm going swimming with Nicolas. MOTHER Comment vas-tu à la piscine? How are you getting to the pool? INES shrugs. MOTHER (CONT’D) à pied ou à vélo? walking or on your bike? INES A vélo. On my bike. Ines walks to the window. Ines turns to camera. INES (CONT’D) Préfèrez-vous voyager à vélo, à pied ou en autobus? Do you prefer to travel by bike, on foot or by bus? 7 EXT. INES HOUSE - DAY INES leaves the house pushing her bike. She is wearing a scarf, hat and gloves. She wipes her brow and sighs. INES Il fait froid?... il pleut?... Non, il fait beau! (MORE) 7 8. INES (CONT'D) Cold day?... Raining?... No it’s nice! Ines sets off on her bicycle. EXT. NICOLAS HOUSE - DAY NICOLAS leaves his house. Nicolas looks up at the clear sky. NICOLAS Oh il fait beau, je vais à la piscine à pied. It’s a nice day, I’m going to walk to the pool. 8 EXT. ALLEY WAY - DAY 8 Ines cycles down the alley way. 9 EXT. HAIRDRESSER - DAY 9 Nicolas walks past a hairdresser on the corner of a street. 10 EXT. SIDE OF THE ROAD - DAY 10 Ines is seen cycling on the right hand sice of the road and she reaches a road sign showing, among others, Piscine, Complexe Sportif and Toutes directions. 13 EXT. TABAC - DAY 13 NICOLAS passes the bureau Tabac. EXT. PATH - DAY Ines get off her bike and takes off her hat. 16 EXT. GRASS FIELD - DAY Nicolas is seen running across a field. He passes the roadsigns. EXT. OUTSIDE SWIMMING POOL - DAY Ines is sitting on the steps outside the pool. 16 9. INES Oh, il fait froid. Oh, it’s cold. Ines turns towards camera. INES (CONT’D) Quel temps fait-il aujourd'hui? Il fait froid ou il fait chaud? What's the weather like today? Is it cold or warm? 18 EXT. SWIMMING POOL - DAY INES is sitting on steps outside the pool. She pick up her hat and scarf and walks to the top of the steps. Nicolas walks around the corner. Salut! Hi! NICOLAS INES looks up and waves. Salut! Hi! INES Nicolas run up the steps and they kiss eachother on the cheeks. NICOLAS Ah, tu viens à vélo! Oh, you've come on your bike! INES Oui. Et toi? Yes. And you? NICOLAS Moi, à pied. Me, on foot. INES Allez, on y va... il fait froid. Let’s go then, it’s cold. The two children walk up to the door of the pool. They both stop in their tracks and stare at the sign. They read out loud in unison. 18 10. NICOLAS lundi, mardi, mercredi, vendredi, neuf heures à dixhuit heures. jeudi, fermé! Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, nine o’clock to six o’clock. Thursday, closed! Fermé?! Closed?! INES lundi, mardi, mercredi, vendredi, neuf heures à dixhuit heures. jeudi, fermé! Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, nine o’clock to six o’clock. Thursday, closed! NICOLAS Nicolas turns away from the door and sits down on the steps with his head resting on his palms. He looks at camera. NICOLAS (CONT’D) A quelle heure ouvre la piscine le lundi? What time does the pool open on Mondays? 19 INT. TOM’S BORROWED BEDROOM - DAY QCA Unit 8 - L’argent de poche (pocket money) - year 4 19 Two children, NOE and CORENTIN W, are looking around a room with lots of toys. Corentim W motions to various toys that Noe picks up and examines. Noe’s mouth keeps dropping open in awe of Corentin W’s things. Noe is engrossed in a particular toy when Corentin W taps him on the shoulder. Noe turns around and Corentin W signals him to come to the corner where there is a big BOX/CHEST with a LID. The children kneel down in the corner of the room. Pablo, very carefully, lifts up the lid. A light from inside the box shines onto their faces. CORENTIN W (whispers) Regarde ma console. C'est hypercool, n'est-ce pas? Look at my console. It's great, isn't it? Noe reaches inside the box but CORENTIN pulls his hand away and closes the box. NOE C'est magnifique! Je n'ai pas de console. Je voudrais une console. It's great. I haven't got a console. I'd like a console. 11. Noe lifts the lid again and stares into the box. NOE (CONT’D) C'est combien? How much is it? CORENTIN W C’est à trente-cinq Euros, au supermarché. It’s thirty-five Euro, at the supermarket. Noe slams the lid down and looks shocked. Oh là là! Oh no! NOE Corentin W turns to camera. Behind him Noe lifts the lid and peers inside the box. NOE (CONT’D) Pouvez-vous compter jusqu’à trente-cinq en français? Can you count to thirty-five in French? 20 INT. NOE’S LIVING ROOM - DAY 20 NOE is counting out notes and coins in front of his father. NOE Quinze, seize, dix-sept, dixhuit, dix-neuf... vingt, vingt-etun, vingt-deux! Fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen... twenty, twenty-one, twenty-two! NOE looks triumphantly at his father. He smiles sweetly. NOE (CONT’D) Papa, la console est à trentecinq Euros. Je n’ai que vingtdeux Euros. Je vais au supermarché. Je pourrais avoir treize, Euros, s'il vous plaît! Dad, the games console is 35 Euro. I've got 22 Euro. I am going to the supermarket - I'd like 13 Euro, please! DAD Non, c'est trop cher... No, it’s too expensive... 12. PABLO huffs and folds his arms over his chest. DAD (CONT’D) Moi, je voudrais une Porsche mais c'est trop chère! I’d like a Porsche, but it’s too expensive! Dad looks thoughtful. DAD (CONT’D) Ah, ma voiture. Oh, my car. 21 EXT. NOE’S HOUSE, DRIVEWAY - DAY 21 NOE blows on the bonnet of a shiny car creating a small patch of steam. He buffs it with a cloth and looks up at his father. He holds out his hand. His father smiles and reaches in his pocket. DAD Ah, l'argent de poche... cinq Euros... et dix Euros pour la voiture. C'est comme une Porsche! Now, here's your pocket money... five Euro... and 10 Euro for the car. It's like a Audi! NOE Merci papa. Thanks Dad. Noe turns to camera. NOE (CONT’D) Combien d'argent de poche vous donne-t-on? How much pocket money do you get? 22 INT. SUPERMARKET - DAY CORENTIN W pushes Noe in a trolley through the big aisles of the supermarket. They look around in awe. They arrive at the toy aisle. CORENTIN Tiens! Voilà les consoles. Hey! Here are the consoles. NOE jumps out of the trolley. 22 13. NOE Et voilà mon argent! Je vais compter... And here’s my money! I’m going to count... NOE empties the money from a WALLET onto the floor. NOE (CONT’D) Vingt, vingt-cinq, trente, trentecinq, trente-sept. Twenty, twenty-one, thirty, thirty-five, thirty-seven. The children look at each other. CORENTIN W Trente-sept Euros? C'est trop! La console est à trente-cinq Euros. Thirty-seven Euro? That’s too much! The console is thirty-five Euro. NOE looks further up the display aisle. A label reads ‘2 Euro’. The item, in a small box, is hidden from view. NOE smiles. NOE Oui, ça va. Yes, that’s OK. 23 INT. SUPERMARKET, CHECK-OUT - DAY The children, NOE and CORENTIN W, wait in line to pay for the console and the small box. Bonjour! Bonjour! ATTENDANT NOE/CORENTIN W The supermarket ATTENDANT (BERENICE) scans their items. ATTENDANT Trente-sept Euros, s'il vous plaît. Thirty-seven Euro, please. Merci. Thanks. NOE 23 14. EXT. OUTSIDE SHOPI- DAY NOE Salut! Bye! Salut! Bye! 24 CORENTIN W INT. NOE’S LIVING ROOM - EVENING Noe is proudly showing off his new console. NOE Papa, Regarde ma console! Dad, Look at my console! Ah, oui! Oh, yes. DAD Noe has his hand behind his back. His father frowns. NOE Et pour toi.....une Porsche. And a Porsche for you. Noe beams at him as he hands over the small box. Dad opens the box and takes out the small toy car. Noe turns to camera. NOE (CONT’D) Tu as vingt-cinq Euros! Qu'est-ce que tu vas acheter? You have 25 Euros! What are you going to buy? 24
