TITLE : ►S’enraciner: to root/to take root // une racine: a root PARAGRAPH 1: ► (un) tumulte: tumult, chaos. ►Le mariage pour tous: Same-sex marriage. A bill granting same-sex couples the right to marry and jointly adopt children was introduced to the National Assembly by the Socialist government of Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault on 7 November 2012, with the support of President François Hollande, who declared his intent to support the legislation during his campaign for the presidency. On 12 February 2013, the National Assembly approved the bill in a 329–229 vote. On 12 April 2013, the Senate approved the bill with amendments in a 171– 165 vote, followed by the approval of the amended bill by the National Assembly on 23 April 2013 in a 331–225 vote. Opinion polls generally show that the French public supports the legalisation of same-sex marriage: See all statistics at the end of the article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samesex_marriage_in_France ►Persister: to last ►À un niveau élevé: to a high level ►SOS homophobie: SOS Homophobie is a LGBT support organization based in France that deals with homophobia. The organization currently consists of a 900 volunteer members as well as 17 regional offices, all of which are based in France. The group is frequently mentioned on various media such as social media sites, television, and print.[3] SOS Homophobie provides national support programs including an anonymous hotline, testimonials on websites and support offered through postal mail. The main objectives of the organization are to support those who have fallen victim to homophobia and to run homophobia prevention events. Moreover, the organization aims to ultimately achieve equality between homosexual and heterosexual couples, and equal treatment for people despite sexual orientation. ►Un rapport annuel: an annual report/account ►L’unique baromètre disponible en France sur le sujet: the only available indicator in France. ►Les chiffres: the figures ►Démontrer: to reveal/prove ►L’enracinement: the rooting/the establishment ►Selon: according to ►Entrer dans les mœurs: to become widely accepted/to become part of society life. Les mœurs means the customs, the habits. « L’homophobie ordinaire persiste », commente M. Roszéwitch. PARAGRAPH 2 : ►Recueillir: to collect/to gather ►Un témoignage: (in this context) an account ►Une baisse: a decrease ►Par rapport à: compared to ►Une année record: a record-breaking year ►Dénombrer: to count/tally ►En hausse de 80%: an 80% increase ►Des propos: words/remarks ►Tenus: held. From the verb « tenir » to hold ►Reculer: (in this context – to diminish) ►Cependant: However ►Une augmentation: an increase ►Les donées: the data/the figures ►Antérieur à/aux/à la: prior to ►L’homophobie vécue au quotidien : homophobia in day-to-day life ►Le milieu scolaire: school environment ►Le voisinage: the neighbourhood Une agression tous les deux jours Le chiffre des agressions reste inquiétant. PARAGRAPH 3: ►Une agression: an attack/an assault ►Tous les deux jours: every couple of days ►Inquiétant: worrying ►Etre en recul: same as « reculer » (in this context – to diminish) ►Équivaloir: to amount to ►Signaler (un crime): to report a crime ►Il ne s’agit que de celles rapportées à SOS Homophobie: It only concerns the ones reported to SOS Homophobia. ►Donc: therefore ►En partie: partially ► (une) hausse globale: an overall growth ► (une) propension à: a tendency to ►Notoriété: fame, renown. PARAGRAPH 4: ► (un) comportement: a behavior ►Décrire: to describe ►Précision: accuracy ► (une) injure: an insult. (An injury in French is une blessure) ►PD: slang/insult for homosexual. PARAGRAPH 5: ► Numerous cases of rejection and harassment are also being reported, such as the one of 14 yo Houda, who made her coming out inside her school located in the department of Yvelines. Her classmates don’t want to touch her anymore by fear of being contaminated, and stones are being thrown at her and some suggest that she should jump in front of a train. She has been thrown over the guardrail of a staircase by a group of students and she dropped school ever since, says SOS Homophobia. » PARAGRAPH 6: ► The organization has noticed that Internet is the place where most of the homophobia is being expressed. Freedom of speech is often put forward in order to justifiy the use of words that are reprehensible by law (insults, incitement to discrimination, call for slaughter). An example among many others: “Faggots, when real men will be in charge (of our countries) we will throw them in the gas chambers, just like we did it with the jews!” “If my son was homosexual I would kill him with my own hands, I’m a homophobe and I’m comfortable with it.” Notes: Andrei E.S
