P r o d u c t s - P i g m e n t s Natural and synthetic pigments Effervescent pigments Ocre jaune Coloring products Crushed coloring products and possibly burned, in powder, pigments are introduced in mortars, concrete, paint, stucco and other preparations with lime, cement or gypsum, for coloring in the mass There are many natural pigments or synthetic, whose coloring power may change The proposed selection is composed of pigments most commonly used for building and decoration Sienne calcinée Ocre havane Ombre calcinée Oxyde bleu outremer* Characteristics Oxyde jaune 20* Violet lumière* Oxyde ocre Ocre rouge Sienne naturelle Oxyde vert* Noir naturel Jaune bouton-d’or* Vert de Syrie* The reproduction of colors is not exhaustive and is subject to printing techniques. The range includes references to other pigments. Orange Valencien* All pigments have an important covering power thanks to their extreme thinness. Their coloring powers and their properties may change. Earths and Ochres are at their natural stage, mixed with topsoil and sand. They come from natural oxidation reactions of various metal elements (ex: iron). The artificial pigments are coming from industrial production, from metallic elements such as iron and copper. Each pigment has its own absorption coefficient of solar radiation. Light colors absorb less sunlight than dark colors. In general, it is forbidden to exceed 3% of the pigment weight in comparison to the weight of lime in the production of a render. Similarly, the pigments are subjected to a saturation limit in the production of lime wash and lime paints. We are talking about “limit of saturation”. This limit changes according to the nature of the pigment used and according to the works. It is essential to respect it. This is the maximum allowed for artificial pigments (expressed as a percentage in comparison to the weight of the lime in powder): For natural pigments: ■ Limewash (25%) ■ Patina(65%) Uses ■ ■ ■ Coloration with pigments is used both for paints, distempers, stucco, tadelakts for renders. The renders are traditionally colored in the mass by local sands but an addition of pigments allows obtaining more various colors. To realize vivid colors, it is necessary to apply a colored lime wash or a painting on render still fresh (a fresco) or dry (a secco). Lime wash and lime paints can also be applied on other surfaces such as stone or brick. It is possible to get an idea of the final color accelerating drying with an hair dryer on a test sample. A first approach of the final color of a coating can be obtained by mixing dry pigments (ochres and earths only), lime and sand. To avoid occasions, it is advisable to prepare at once the amount necessary to achieve a complete wall surface. A pre-calculation of 320 colors was conducted in the laboratory from 8 colors only Effervescent pigments? Who has not had the experience of a pigment improperly mixed and smeared on a wall?
