Abstract.
L’occupation française de Tunis a lancé une confrontation démographique pour le futur de
la «colonie européenne» de Tunisie. Le gouvernement italien gardait des espoirs
impérialistes pour la Tunisie, et la déjà grande population italienne émigrée continuait à
grandir. Les ministres italiens appelaient cette communauté une « colonie » italienne, pas
politique, mais culturelle et démographique. Paris et Rome se sont rapprochés en 1896, mais
les Français en Tunisie continuaient à manifester une xénophobie anti-sicilien et anti-italien
contre cette colonie et à exiger l’assimilation des Italiens en Tunisie. La colonie voisine de
l’Algérie était une colonie de peuplement, mais le peuplement européen de Tunisie devenait
italien, pas français! Cet essai fournit de nouvelles perspectives sur les catégories
traditionnelles de la colonie, du colonisé et du colonisateur.
The French occupation of Tunis launched a demographic struggle for the future of the
“European colony” of Tunisia. The Italian government held imperialist hopes for Tunisia,
and the already large Italian emigrant population there continued to grow. Italian
politicians called this community an Italian “colony,” with a cultural and demographic
meaning in spite of Italy’s lack of political control. Paris and Rome grew closer
diplomatically in 1896, but the French in Tunisia continued to manifest an anti-Sicilian and
anti-Italian xenophobia against the Italian colony, calling for the assimilation of Italians in
Tunisia. The neighboring colony of Algeria was designated a population colony, but the
European population of Tunisia was becoming not French, but Italian! This essay offers new
perspectives on the traditional categories of colony, colonized, and colonizer.
