Reporting riot, revolution (and recreation) in the
Middle East: a journalist’s life
Hugh Sykes
Reporter and presenter with the BBC since 1974,
now specialising in the Middle East
Montreux Fairmont Palace – Monday June 29th, 2015 – luncheon – 11h30
Hugh Sykes will take us on a poignant but also
amusing ramble through his experiences of being a
BBC reporter in the Middle East, across Iraq, Egypt,
Afghanistan, Syria, Iran, Lebanon, Jordan, Yemen,
Turkey, Israel and the occupied Palestinian
territories. His emphasis is on talking to ordinary
people. Hugh not only reports on conflict but also
recounts happy stories, such as the budding music
and theatre scene in downtown Baghdad.
He will tell us about the frustrations, dangers and
especially the satisfactions of a journalist’s life in
some of these trouble spots.
Born into a family of British diplomats, as a child Hugh Sykes lived in Germany, Iran, and Canada
before completing his education at The Queen’s College, Oxford.
Hugh first worked for the BBC (at Radio Oxford) as a student in 1970. His first ‘proper’ job, in 1973,
was reporter and editor for Britain's first legal commercial radio station: LBC in London.
In 1974 Hugh rejoined the BBC, for which he has worked continuously as a radio and TV reporter
and presenter.
In 1978, he was offered a ‘probationary contract’ to report for the famous Today Programme
(the BBC’s most popular current affairs programme which reaches seven million listeners every
week). He stayed for ten years, reporting from Britain and overseas (and providing the main
radio coverage of the Carter-Reagan presidential election), regularly presenting alongside the
renowned Brian Redhead and John Timpson.
Hugh then became a well-known voice on BBC programmes such as PM, TheWorld at One, The
World This Weekend and Broadcasting House.
Hugh has particularly focussed on reporting from the Middle East, including the Iraq war. But he
has also reported from Pakistan, South Africa, Germany and Northern Ireland; and has sent
features from India, China, Russia, France, Italy and Spain. He has survived a death threat in
Northern Ireland and a roadside bomb in Iraq, and was once almost thrown into a canal by
angry, striking miners in Wigan in the north of England.
In 2004 and 2005, Hugh won the Gold and Silver Sony Radio Academy awards for Journalist of
the Year. And three times he has won 2ème prix pour la radio at the annual Prix Bayeux des
correspondants de guerre.
