The American continent was originally populated
by people called Native Americans.
When Christopher Columbus discovered America
in 1492, he thought he had arrived to India, so he
called the people he encountered "Indians" .
There were a lot of Native American tribes on the
North American continent: the most famous were
Appaches, Cherokees, Navajos, Cheyennes in the
USA, Inuits in Canada, Aztec and Mayas in
Mexico.
Unfortunately, Europeans gradually occupied the
whole of the American continent and
expropriated Native Americans. Tribes live in a
small number of reservations today.
