Beaubassin-est Merit Awards
Beaubassin-est Rural Community presented the Merit and Youth Awards, as well as Certificates
of Recognition, during the Anniversary Celebration on July 28th, 2016.
ARTS AND CULTURE
The Award for Excellence in the Arts and Culture was awarded to Melvin Gallant of GrandBarachois, to highlight his cultural involvement in the Acadian community. This literature
professor at the Université de Moncton has worked in the field of publishing and creation. Through
the years, he has published more than twenty volumes, notably the novel "Le Métis de Beaubassin"
and the series of Ti-Jean and Tite-Jeanne that marked several youth. Mr. Gallant is now retired
and he spends six months in Grand-Barachois and six months in the south.
BUSINESS
The Award for Excellence in Business was presented to the company Seacoast Fishing Supplies
Ltd. in Grand-Barachois, to highlight its achievements over the past 30 years. Donald Boudreau is
the owner of this company that manufactures wooden lobster traps. It's also a retail store for fishing
equipment where you will find everything you need, from electrical equipment to cleaning
products. The company exists since 1985 and employs several people.
SPORT, RECREATION AND ACTIVE LIVING
The prize in the Sports, Recreation and Active Living category was awarded to the new Minor
Baseball Association of Beaubassin-est. Last spring, a group of parents decided to revive baseball
in the area to enable young people to practice this beautiful sport that played an important role for
several athletes. A first meeting took place in April and other meetings followed, and now the first
season of the Minor Baseball Association of Beaubassin-est is well underway. The launch took
place on Saturday July 23rd at the baseball field in Haute-Aboujagane, with the official throw by
none other than Rheal Cormier. Approximately 235 kids are enrolled this season in the Rally Cap,
Rookie, Mosquito, Pee Wee and Bantam categories, to play for the Beaubassin Jays.
YOUTH AWARD
The Beaubassin-est Youth Award was presented to Mathieu Boudreau of Grand Barachois. This
year, he was part of the Robotics Club of the Louis-J.-Robichaud (LJR) school in Shediac who
won the 5th place at the Skills Compétences Canada trades and technologies national competition,
in June in Moncton. The LJR Robotics Club qualified for that competition by winning 1st place at
the Atlantic robotics competition, RobotEast. Along with Mathieu Boudreau, a 10th grade student,
Luc Poirier, Sebastien Boudreau and Samuel O'Brien, all in grade 12, very well represented New
Brunswick at the Skills Canada National Competition.
COMMUNITY PIONEER
The municipality presented a recognition award to a pioneer of the Beaubassin-est community, Joe
Bourque of Grand Barachois. In addition to being a Knight of Columbus always ready to help
people in the community, he freely gave his time to drive seniors and residents with special needs
to outings with the help of the Villa Providence bus. Joe Bourque has served on several
committees, among others, the Caisse populaire de Barachois, the provisional committee of
Westmorland-Albert solid waste, the advisory committee for local services in Barachois, the
"Living Monument in Barachois" project for the beautification of the cemetery, and the
environment and beautification Committee of the Père-Edgar-T.-LeBlanc school. In 2002 he made
a valuable donation to the Acadian Studies Centre, a collection of over 300 photos on the past of
