TEST IN A SAMPLE OF SUPPOSEDLY NORMAl, URBAN ADULTS Alice Madeleine Galland de Mira The Author presents the distribution 01 pathologic traits, such as schizothymia, dysrythmia, instability, psychomotor deliciency, obsessivity, cyclothymia, hysteria, paranoia, general conllicting situation and sexual problems obtained by the P. M. K. (myokinetic psychodiagnosis testJ in a randomic sample 01 504 adults who consulted I.S.D.P. during 1956. An operational delinition 01 the pathological traits is given and its signs revealed by the P M . K. in order to avoid a subjective interpretation. The results denotes that Rio de Janeiros's population is essentially schizothymic, as it is revealed by the 49,6% 01 the cases 01 the sample. Disrythmia traits are lound in 27,8% and instability traits in 24,2. NEGATIVE CASES OF VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE (REJECTION OF THE VOCATIONAL COUNSEL) Cecilia T. Stramandinoli The A. analyzes 20 cases 01 re;ection 01 the vocational counsel. The lollow-up 01 them shows: aJ The alleged motives have been economical, dellicient interest lor the proposed jobs, opposition 01 the lamily or internal conllicts. bJ the majority 01 cases was already insatislied with their present si• - Para os artigos originais, ver: "Arquivos Brasileiros de Psicotécnica" Ns. 1, 2, 3, Março-Stembro de 1957. PRELIMINAY VIFJWS ON A STUDY OI<' PERSONALITY TESTS Dora de Barros Cullinam This article deals with the progress being made on the research which the writer undertook at the request of the Director of I.S.O.P. This study aims to determine the correlation between the personality tests most frequently used at I. S . O. P ., that is: the M. K . P ., the Rorschach and the T.A.T. After making several commentaries on the possibilities and limitations of a research of this nature. the writer presents the plan of her study (specific aims and course ol action). The article includes also data on the initial phases of the work, namely: criteria for the selection of research samples, its analysis and classification. A few charts are presented in order to clarify the procedures through which from 725 case-studies the research material was reduced to 107 case studies. It includes the classification of each individual into groups and subgroups, according to the characteristics of his personalily as revealed by the personality tests he was submitted to. This article, as the writer states, does not present any conclusions, since the development of the study it reports has not yet reached a phase leading to conclusive results. A NEW TABLE MODEL FOR THE P.M.K. Dr. Elso Arruda and Nelson Duarte In this work the authors present a new table, style very much imploved, for the application of the P. M . K. The following changes were introduced: the table is larger, heavier and firm, but easy to hand without greater effort by the technician, besides the fact that he may use the board as well as the screen in every required position. By a simple mechanical device the board where lhe P. M. K is ct.one takes the horizontal as well as the vertical positions without sliding from the center. Moreover, the test book is fasterred by spe-'CÍal springs that let the sheets free to be taken out one after another without changing the position of the remaining ones below. In the same way by a movement device in the screen, the pike takes every position one wants, letting the examiner's hand free for time recording or to take notes. The patient has no need to change the position oOf his chair in order to trace vertical or horizontal lines, because there is no discentralization of the board wich (unlikely what happened with the conventional tables) on the other hand, consist of the central portion of the table only, remaining on each side enough space to put some objects on, or lay his arm without interfering with the patitnet's movements. The present table has just been aproved by the author himself, professor Mira y Lopez, to whom it was dedicated. SOME PROBT~EMS OF CHILDREN AS VIEWED THROUGH THEIR FANTASIES IN THE THEMATIC APPERCEPTION TSE'I.' Esther França e Silva 1) -- More frequently than girls, boys refer to the paternal personality as rejecting and as being aggressive towards the child; , 7 RESUMO DE ARTIGOS 2) From 4,000 stories examined we jound 3,400 where the jather was seen either sick, wounded 01' dead. Sometimes it was specijied that the son, himselj, had wounded or killed his jather; 3) Considering basic desirable attitudes, it was jound that boys seem to admire their mothers more than they do their jathers. Nevertheles they S€'e both parents, as such, unde?' a better impression, with better traits; 4) Girls, on the contrary see more undesirable traits in both parents and more so in their mothers who are nearly always vie'wed as hostile, cold and the cause oj jrustration oj ajjections; 5) For boys and girls aWce mothers appear to be the one who preminantly punishes, requires more work and more study and jrom whom the child longs to escape; 6) - The need oj ajjection, observed in more than 90% oj the children examined, induces us to think that mothers oj our era, developing neurotic Tections, cannot ojjer to their children the real love that they require. Lack oj ajjection has resulted in children showing: a) - b) - lack of conjidence, in ge'neral; dejiciency oj selj-conjidence; I ! 7) The "only child" has provided us with the jollowing observations about the essential characteristics oj their jantasies: a) b) c) d) e) f) - introversion; egocentrism; neurotic predisposition; timiàity; anti-sociability; depression. I ,j 8) On the white plate every one oj the 200 children examined saw either a jarm or a summer-house, with animaIs, swiming-pool etc. Should this be interpreted as a desire oj independence, as need to act jreely toward an escape? 9) In general, it can be said that there were more similitudes than dijjerences between children's jantasies and the stories concerning their lije. (Could this have happened unconciously, corresponding, maybe, to a deep rooted wish ?) The stories represented a projection oj the personality at several leveIs. 10) Themes related to: jamily, aggresion, punishment, separation, love (specially, lack oj love) were very jrequent; 11) Boys tell more stories oj violent aggression, interest in richnes3 and love than girls do. In the stories told by girls agression is oj a milder nature and represented by desapproval, scolaing and repulsion; 12) The pressures more jrequently jound were: rejection and do~ minance; 13 - The writer wishes to remark that the sample utilized jor this study was selected among clients who were brougth to ISOP because they presented problems at home and at school. As a general conclusion, this study demonstrated that the high amount oj children's emotional maladjustment is due, principally, to unjavorable rela~ tionship with the parents. PROBUims IN VOCATIONAL SEI..ECTION Francisco Campos The A. postulates a more human touch on dealing with selection or screening oj candidates jor pro.tessional posts. '!'hq social r;roud oj the applicants must be equated and weightoo in order to get a better criterion jor the prognosis oj their juture ejjiciency. AIso the A. points the convenience oj stablishing a dose connection with the managers, employrnent agencies and 8 ARQUIVOS BRASILEIROS DE PSICOTÉCNICA social services for helping the rejected candidates. Attention is called on several other factores which may alter the value of a judgement merely based on the results of the statistical work with the test scores. PERSONAUTY TESTS AND EVALlJATION OF RESULTS Glória Fernandina Quintela The author begins with MacDougall's definition of personality - the unitary synthesis of all the features and functions of the individual in his intimate interrelation - and expresses the point of view of the ISOP that a sole test for conclusion on personality should not be employed. Projective techniques, then, are used, such as Rorschach's Psycho Diagnosis and Murray's TAT; expressive technique, Mira y Lope,·z'P.M.K. and supplementary tests, Koch's Tree Test and others. She presents various summaries of several tests and concludes, from their comparative study, that there is, indeed, a necessity for the use of several personality tests, for besides the comon features estimated in their appreciation, which renders conclusions more exact, these tests really complete one another. EXECUTIVES AS REVEAI,ED BY THE P.M.K. AND THE RORSCHACH TESTS Isabel Adrado.s The P. M . K. and the Rorschach have been obtained in 21 executives. Herewith are summarized the common traits of such sampling on these tests: P . M. K .: highly positive D. P. of the te,'mperamental hand on the saggital and vertical planes (thus indicating a strong heteroaggresivity and a high potential of vital energy). Rorschach: Global perception type; high index of objectivity; high critical capacity; low amount of human moveme:nt answers (with relative dominancy of the actives),. normal general controlo THE STUDY OF TIME IN THE MYOKINETIC PSYCHODIAGNOSTIC OF MIRA Y LOPEZ José Cavaliere Figueiredo The Author presents the basic principles required to establish norms for the study of the "time" needed to make each part of the Myokinetic Psychodiagnostic (MKP) 01 D.r Mira y Lopez. The factor "time" is of great importance for the interpretation of the test since it makes possible a standardization of data and its statistic consideration. It also helps the comparison 01 conclusions reached through different resaerches and finally, permits the elaboration of general evaluatian scales. The Author, otfers several examples to show the great varie,1;y of data that may be obtained through the accurate measurement of "time" in the M.K.P. He also presents a few rules for "time taking" procedure for each part Df the test and the statistic results attained through the study of 54 comple tests. The conclusions that derive from this study may be summarized as toUows: 1) There is more constancy in the "time" taken to make the different parts of the test which are made by the "genotypic hand". It was nevertheless verified that in this case the correlations vary in the two plans. In spite 01 the very smaU sample used one may believe that the correlations are signilicant for the total percentage as weU as for the percentage of each plano 9 RESUMO DE ARTIGOS 1 I 2) There is les constancy in the "time" elapsed to make the test corresponding -to the "fenotypic hand" and variations in both plans. In this case the correlations are not significant although subject to former confirmation. 3) There is more constancy in the "time:" taken to make contin1lous movements. In this case all the correlations were signficant. THE KOCH TEST AND ITS USE FOR EDUCATIONAL AND VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE I,iette Valente Franchi The writer presents some of the observations during eight years of work, regarding the Koch test, reaching the following conclusions: A) the test offers valuable assistance to vocational and educational guidance; B) the degree of agrement between the results of this test and those of other methods of personality study is very high; C) the test has the faculty of bringing out many times, the dominant interests and preoccupations of the individual; D) It permits an appreciation of the intellectual level of the subject; E) revealing, at once, any serious psYchic perturbances, it makes possible the determining of the type of guidance to be given to those who, although desirous or in need of psychological assistance, solicit, as a pretext, only vocational guidance; F) many characteristics perceived in clients of ISOP have proven to be significant: substitution of roots by darkened spheric forms; disconnected trace of the trunk, etc; G) Through special characteristics it permits an insight into problems of conduct, deformation of character and so on. H) By means of a comparison of the two trees (first and second), it clears the supposition that the conflicts are due either to a predisposition (weak structure) or to external factors; 1) the observation and annotation of the behavior of the individual in face of the test should always be made; J) it is also important to observe the method of work, as well as the mouvements employed and the time consumed in the execution of the testo K) Experience at ISOP has shown that, in some cases, the learning of Drawing, as we.zl as marked lack of graphic aptitude can interfere with the results: L - the obtaining of two trees - which should be adopted as routine technique eliminates one of the above disadvantages; M) The writer found good acceptance of the testo Among 4050 individuals examined only 1 (one) refused to submit to it. SOME PROBLEMS OF PROFESSIONAL REHABILITATION Maria Helena da Silva Novais Several prbolems concerning the professional rehabilitation, looked upon as a phase of the rehabilitation process, have been considered through the study of a group limited to 20 disabled veterans belonging to the C _R. L F. (Comissão de Readaptação dos Incapazes das Fôrças Armadas) and difficulties in this particular field have been outlinoo eVidencing the need Df a systematic set up of the medical, psychological, social an economical pro file of the handicaped person, of his intelectual level, specific aptitudes, tendencies, interests, etc.~ inasmuch as of a careful resarch of the opportunities and possibilities of immediate employment, and above all the creation Df an effective connection with the vocational training centres. 10 ARQUIVOS BRASILEIROS DE PSlCOTÉCNICA ANALYSIS OF THE CONCORDANCES AND DISCORDANCES BETWEEN SYXTHESIS OF INTERVIEW AND FINAL SYNTHESIS, IN THE PROCESS OF VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE l\lariana Agostini de Villalba Alvim in collaboration with l\laria Helena da Silva N ovaes Research carried out in a sample 01 100 cases 01 vocational guidance, in an age group Irom 16 to 21, 01 both sexes. The sample is composed 01 25 cases 01 each psychologist, among the most experienced in the interview technique. The analysis principally aims at the comparative study 01 the diagnostical synthesis 01 interview - lirst stage 01 the process 01 guidance - with the results 01 the linal report 01 general synthesis - the last stage 01 the processo In the diagnosticaI synthesis 01 the interviews, the elements which might enable the analysis 01 concordances and discrepances with the synthesis 01 the other tests where pointed out. Those elements were compared with those lound in tests 01 personality, intelligence, specilic vocations and interests inventories. OI the analysis 01 the results lound, the lollowing conclusions stand out: 1.0 - high percentage 01 concordance between the synthesis 01 interview and the linal synthesis 01 the group 01 tests applied (87%), making evident the value 01 the interview as a means 01 diagnosis and not only as a source 01 inlormation; 2.° - great proximity in the index 01 concordance in the results obtained by the lour psychologists, which seems to prove the homogeneity 01 criteria in the interpretations 01 the it€"ns analysed; 3.° - the interview is the only way by which it is possible to apprehend personality in its dynamism and as a whole. Owing to the subjective nature of the interview, the quantitative estimation 01 the data revealed is, however, imponderable. therelore escapmg statistic control; 4.0 - the interview is not sullicient as regards a deeper and specilic exploration 01 personality characteristics. Though it allows Y;he estimation grosso modo 01 mental capacity, it does not provide either the means 01 measuring the other aspects 01 intelligence Irom the quantitativ€'o and qualitative standpoints; 5.° - im spite 01 the limitations mentioned, the results 01 the research lead to the conclusion that the methods and techniques oj interview adopted at the I.S.O.P. are stisfactory. A~ EXPERIENCE WITH THE TEST "CUBES OF KOHS" Maria Santa Cruz Lima The present writing is a report 01 an experience undertaken with the "Kohs' Cubes" test, applied on a group 01 unliterated 01' semi-unliterated individuals, candidates to enter in a determina te institution 01 assistencial character, Unsatislyed with the lirst results obtained, the author recurred to two groups 01 individuaIs: one integrated by subjects having lo UI' 01' six years 01 recIosure in the rellered to organization and another 01 scholars with chronological age equivalent to the group 01 candidates. Due to the characteristics 01 the lirst group, two procedures were tryed and used as a complernent to the test, immediatly 'alter the application. The jirst consisted in verilying the immediate adaptation 01 the examinant to the type 01 task that has been commited to him. Therejor, the author reapresented the models not executed, proceding at the same time to a detailed study 01 the lorm. calor, position in relation to the table 01 work. 11 RESUMO DE ARTIGOS The second complement consisted on asking the examinant for its own creation of a new modelo Such artifices, used for the three groups, have given astonishing resultso The author of this report promisses to take these experiences as a start .for a work of greater countenanceo EDUCATIONAL FAULTS (CASlj·STUDIES OF EDUCATIONAL AT I.O.S.P.) GUIDANel!~ Marieta Leite The writer aims to offer a documented contribution to the theory that parents and teachers - even when aware of this possibility - may have an unfavorable influence upon the education of children and adolescents by arouslng, motivating or establishmg in their behavior undesirable patterns of reactiono In order to illustrate her point of vue the writer selects a few casestudies of children who were counselees of the "Children Guidance Section", 'Of loSoD.P. The writer considered, for this specific study, exclusively, case-studies which involved normal personalities. She studied adult behavior which represented a domineering influence in each especific case and could be hold responsible, athough not exclusively, for the maladjustment observed. With this point in view the writer ascertains the contribution of the psychologist for the discovery of environmental causes which are not habitually detected by other adults This would occur either owing to the fact that the causes in question are too intangible or because the adults concerned are too 'Closely involved with other formative factors of children's personality. The case-studies presented were as follows: o 1) - 2) - 3) 4) - a case of a "difficult child" with asmatic seizures as reaction to lack of adequate recreational outlets. a case of a child considered to be an "impossible child" as a reaction to a life indirect intimidation. a case of nocturnal enuresis established as a response to stimuli of intense anxiety derived from the family environment. a case of school failure that could not be explained by lack of mental aptit7lde and in which a combination of circunstances exercises a negative influence upon the child as: the label given by adults to this case; maternal anxiety; fraternal jealousy lack of adequa te recreation. THE SPECIAI, EXAMINATIONS OF THE PSYCHOMOTOR POWER AT THE I.S.O.P. Robert F. E. Suchanek At the loSoDoPo (Institute for selection and orientation of professions) , '!lt is understood by "Psycho-motor power", a unit of relation, of the psychical and corporal make-up of a human being. The examination of psycho-motoT power must include in the judgment of psychophisical activities, motor factors as weU as 12012 motor factors an should be based 012 5 fundamental points: Rapidity, Ability (manual) Pratical intelligence, Perception (forms) Imagination (in space). ' At the loS D P the tasks of the psychomotor examination are triple. o o o 1. 2 3. o - o o For Selection (industrial): To measure aptitude for specific professions. For professional Orientation: To check psychophysical abilityo For Readjustment or Recovery: To investigate the possibilities for the "exceptional cases". 12 ARQUIVOS BRASILEIROS DE PSICOTÉCNICA STUDY OF AN ADOIJESCENT GROUP PRI<JSENTING THE PROBLEM OF SCHOOL FAILURE Ruth Scheeffer Simões Some characteristics 01 adolescents, who came to the Guidance Division the Institute 01 Selection and Vocational Guidance due to the problem 01 school lailure, were studied. The cases examined were in number 01 40. (age range Irom 13 to 17 years old). The lollowing aspects were investigated: sex: age; school grade in which the adolescent lailed; lamily position; lamily phychological atmosphere and parental attitudes toward, the adolescent; cultural leveI; health conditions; subject matter disliked by the adolescent; subject matters in which they lailed; reasons presented by the adolescents lor the lailure: intellectual leveZ and personality characteristics. The lollowing conclusions were considered signilicant: 1) There was absolute predominance 01 male adolescents; 2) greatest number 01 lailure on the Irst and 2nd grades 01 secondary school; 3) the highest number 01 lailures on mathematics; 4) there was highest percentage in the group studied 01 oldest children, lollowed by only children; 5) signilicant percentage 01 the adolescents revealed average intellectual leveI; 6) in regard to personality characteristics there was highest number 01 those classilied as "maladjusted"; 7) a substancial number 01 adolescents presented unsatislactory health conditions. 01 REMARKS ABOUT SOME OCCURRl<JNCES IN THE "SECTION OF CHILDREN Gl.TIDANCE" - FROM JUNE TO DECEMBER 1956 Vasco Vaz e Celina Pinheiro The purpose 01 this work was to establish: a) the activity 01 the Children Department Irom JUly to De:cember, 1956; b) the means used lor the investigation, that is, the planning and choice 01 the tests appropriate to each particular problem; c) the most Irequent motives 01 consultation, as well as to spot both the origin and elements which aggravate the disturbance under observation. 1) Seventy cases were taken up - 52 males (74,28%) and 18, (25,72) lemales. 2) it was ascertained that in 39 cases, that is 55,71%, the "motive lor the consultation" was primarily a maladjustment at home and at the school. 3) 58 cases, that is, 82,8% revelealed shortcomings in lamiliar structure, that is, delective understanding between parents and children, or between the parents themselves, an in some instances the necessity arised 01 avoiding the interlerence 01 other members 01 the lamily in the educational process 01 the children, who were under the stress 01 strong environmental repressions (physical punishment, compairisons to brothers or sisters tending to humiliate the child, partial treatement, etc.). 4) in 48 cases, that is 68,5%, it was ascertained the necessity 01 social contacts, recreation and plays which were not practised owing to the lack of iniciative or restrictions imposed by the parents. 5) singe children also, so olten loocked upon as "problem children" have lost, according to our experience, their place to the elder child; in lact, the lormer rank second in the line 01 maladjustment cases: elder children 32 cases, :that is 45,71%, and single children 14 cases, that is 20%. RtSUMtE DISTRIBUITION DE!; TRAITS PATHOLOGIQUES DECELÉS PAR LE P.M.K. S . QUELQUES PROBI,EMES DES EXFANTS APPRECIÉS A TRAVERS DE L'ÉTlJDE DE I,ELTRS FANTAISIES REVELÉS PAR LE T.A.T.
