Application
Coverage
•
Rough cast: 1.5 kg/m_
(one 25kg bag of KATYMPER PISCINE for approximately 16 m_)
•
Plaster : 12 to 14 kg /m_ for a thickness of 8 mm
(one 25kg bag of KATYMPER PISCINE for approximately 2 m_).
Quality of substrate
The substrate (concrete or waterproof plaster) must be sound, cohesive, clean and
free from dust or any substance that might affect the adhesion of the KATYMPER
PISCINE product (laitance, form-removal oils, traces of paint, etc.).
Preparation of substrate
Substrates which are uneven or have other surface defects (bubbling,
honeycombing, spalling, etc.) must be reshaped or repaired. Use, for example, a
SIKACEM PACK – based mortar.
Re-entrant corners must be rounded off with a groove made from SIKACEM PACKbased mortar, for example.
Rough cast :
•
The day before application, wet the substrate to saturation point. Then
remove excess water: substrates must not be sweating.
•
Prepare a rough cast made with 6 litres of SIKALATEX solution (4 litres of
water and 2 litres of SIKALATEX) mixed with a 25kg bag of KATYMPER
PISCINE. If applying the rough cast by projection, add approximately 5kg
of 0/4 mm sand to the above mixture.
•
Apply the rough cast to the substrates: by brush, trowel or projection.
•
Allow the rough cast to set before applying KATYMPER PISCINE : it must
be hard to the fingernail (waiting time: 12 to 24 hours at 20°C).
•
Note: on the floor surface, the application of rough cast is optional for
concrete paving which has a push-broom textured finish.

Preparation of the mixture

Temperature range for use: + 5 to + 30°C (substrate, product, surrounding
air).
In hot weather conditions it is recommended that work be done once the
temperature starts to fall (later in the day), in order to limit the gas
exchanges which might be caused by the heating up of the substrate.
Avoid working in very hot weather, direct sunlight or dry or heavy winds, to
avoid dehydration, scorching or cracking of the coating.
Be careful of efflorescence due to carbonation of the coating in the event
of application/start of hardening in temperatures lower than 8°C and high
relative humidity.
If applying during pollination of the surrounding vegetation: protect the
coating during application to prevent it being contaminated by pollen (risk
of stains forming).
Mixing equipment: slow-speed mixer (300 revs/min) equipped with a
4-blade propeller, concrete mixer or plaster-projection machine.
Quantity of water for mixing: 4.5 to 5 litres of water per 25kg bag
(depending on the temperature and required consistency).
Be careful to observe the correct quantity of water for mixing.
Do not mix for too long. Let the mixture stand for approximately 10
minutes.
Cleaning of tools
Clean with water, before the product dries.
Application
Wet the substrate to saturation point (dry rough cast or concrete paving with
brushed finish). Remove excess water: substrates must not be sweating.
Apply KATYMPER PISCINE to a minimum thickness of 8 mm, manually (using a
trowel or float) or mechanically using a plaster projection machine.

Finishes
When working on the vertical surface, continue spreading the plaster to a
width of approximately 20cm over the floor surface also, in order to ensure
continuity with the horizontal section.
On the floor surface, apply KATYPER PISCINE in adjacent widths of
approximately 50 cm, from the walls towards the centre of the concrete
slab.
Plane the KATYMPER PISCINE with a smoother and make the adjacent
widths uniform.
Wait until the product begins to set (the product turns matt and can no
longer be indented by finger pressure), then rub the surface with a slightly
moist sponge float (rinse regularly).
As you progress, chase out any occluded air bubbles and immediately fill
with plaster, if necessary.
Be careful to obtain a smooth, homogenous and regular finish.
For further instructions, consult the KATYMPER PISCINE application guide.
•
Smooth finish: after finishing with the sponge float, let the KATYPMPER
PISCINE set (for a few hours, depending on the temperature).
Remove any protuding grains from the surface by brushing the walls with a
brush with medium-hard nylon bristles, until you obtain a smooth facing.
Sanded finish: this finish gives the smoothest surface; it is vital for
highlighting the blue-coloured grains.
Take particular care with the evenness of the coating.
Let the KATYMPER PISCINE harden for 24 to 48 hours.
Sand the coating uniformly, taking care to completely remove the layer of
KATYMPER PISCINE laitance which comes to the surface as a result of the floatfinishing.

Hardening
Curing process
Sanding
Protect from dehydration during the hardening phase.
In high temperatures, spray (after the KATYMPER PISCINE has dried) with a jet of
water regulated to the mist setting. This re-hydration must not be carried out in full
sun or on an overheated substrate. Avoid allowing the water to stagnate on the
coating: this may cause whitish marks (deposits of free lime from the mortar
dissolved in the water).
24 to 48 hours after the coating has been applied.

Filling with water
24 to 48 hours maximum after application, in a continuous manner without
interruptions, in order to guard against marks and colour anomalies on the coating
as it hardens.
Keep the walls wet if the filling of the pool takes longer than one day.
During the first filling after application of the coating, the pH rises above the value
required for swimming pool water (by 7). This phenomenon is natural with a
hydraulic binder-based coating and is dependent upon the water supplied (pH and
mineral content) and on the dimensions of the swimming pool.
In order to optimize the curing and hardening of a new coating:
•
do not carry out an chemical treatments on the water during the first week
after filling;
•
Then, only carry out water disinfection treatments during the following
weeks (3 to 6 weeks, until the pH has stabilized; time varies in accordance
with the characteristics of the water supplied);
•
Then, adjustment of the pH can be commenced, taking care at the same
time to control and adjust, if necessary, the mineral content of the water
(TA and TH between 10 and 15°F).
Restrictions of use
Some advice concerning swimming pool treatments and maintenance.

Precautions for use
Only use «special swimming-pool» products in the doses recommended
by the manufacturer.
Do not put concentrated products (disinfectants, pH correction products,
etc.) directly in contact with the coating. For example, do not pour them
along the walls or leave them to dissolve on the bottom.
«Shock» treatments can harm the coating.
Some electrolytic type water treatment systems can stain the coating:
consult the manufacturer.
Do not use copper sulphate as an anti-algae or hydrochloric acid as a pool
cleaner.
General recommendations for optimal treatment of swimming pool water
advise keeping the water at its chemical equilibrium (pH around 7, TA and
TH between 10 and 15°F).
In the case of water with a low mineral content, it is therefore necessary to
carry out a re-mineralization in order to achieve good water treatment and
ensure the durability of the KATYMPER PISCINE, which is a hydraulic
binder-based product with sand and limestone fillers.
In the case of water with a high mineral content, any use of very acidic
descalers must be limited to zones where deposits are visible on the
coating. Also, it must be controlled (the use of gel-type products is
preferred, in order to avoid the risk of the product running, compliance with
dilution instructions, contact time before rinsing, etc. in accordance with
the manufacturer’s recommendations), in order to allow removal of the
deposits without damage to the coating.
In the case of automatic pH adjustment, be sure to check the adjustments
and have the device regularly calibrated. If not, an excessive injection of
pH corrector could lead to a fall in the pH and demineralization of the
water, which is likely to damage the coating.
Like all mortars used in a similar environment, KATYMPER PISCINE can
be subject to the development of micro-organisms (algae, fungi, etc.)
which sometimes manifest by the appearance of marks of different colours
(brown, grey, green, etc.). These proliferations of micro-organisms are
caused by agents exterior to the product and need suitable treatment
(algaecide, biocide, bactericide, etc.).
To clean the existing coating, do not use metallic tools (brush, scraper,
etc.): as this may leave a deposit of iron particles, which could leave traces
of rust due to oxidation.
